Can you advise on whether spyware is automatically loading when we use these pages or links?

I have noticed that I usually have spyware installed after a day of browsing this site.

Thanks.

Never had any issue such as yours. How are you checking for spywares?

I have never experienced any problems, or spyware after being on slickdeals. And i can assure you I spend a lot of time here.

I'm not sure that you actually mean spyware....Some companies like officemax , staples, best buy, etc....Sometimes they put tracking cookies on your machines once you go to their site. Basically they just try to track shoppers shopping habits.

I admin a popular BB and we get complaints about our board loading "spyware" on users' machines.

It always turns out that it's just an ad cookie that's triggering their spyware detector.

There are programs out there, such as adaware, that monitor your system and alert you when something untowards appears. Adaware, though, always trips on cookies from Avenue A, a popular ad company.

I recently went from AdAware to SpyBot.. It's supposedly better. I tried both at the same time, and SPyB found things that Ad didn't.. So I switched.. Dunno if it really makes a diff... Can anyone edumacate me on this topic?

Yah, Adaware treats cookies as spyware... Don't worry until you get Gator or BonziBuddy though... ;)

McAfee reported that
A computer at slickdeals.net has attempted an unsolicited connection to TCP port 1391 on your computer.
TCP port 1391 is commonly used by the "Storage Access Server" service or program.
A computer at slickdeals.net has attempted an unsolicited connection to TCP port 1390 on your computer.
TCP port 1390 is commonly used by the "Storage Controller" service or program.
I did visit the site at that time. When I tried to get more information it at hackerwatch it said
This port is not currently recorded as being associated with any standard assigned program or known exploit.
I wonder what is going on? I have a firewall router. I wonder how it got through that. Why does slickdeals need access to a port directly anyway?

Spybot IS THE WAY TO GO. Both my sons had problems with their PC's ... running slow .. locking up etc.

Several help boards said you had to reformat hard drive and start over.

I loaded spybot ... ran it once ... and the problem was corrected ...

Up until then we had run Adaware ... now it is SPYBOT all the way.

Just my 2 bytes worth of input.

Run both Spybot and Adaware . One will catch what the other one doesn't. That does not make one program better than the other. Also, make sure that you get the latest updates for each program. They are both invaluable and both do a good job. But don't trust just one to get all the crap out of your computer for you.

I use Spybot S&D. It rokks! (But I have to keep re-installing my Kazaa each time I run a scan tho.) Anyone know a way around this?

I ran SpyBot first and then Adaware found a bunch of stuff that SpyBot missed. So you are better off using both.

Kazaa won't run without cd_clint.dll. There are 3 solutions.
1. Exclude cd_clint.dll when Adaware/SpyBot finds it. The spyware will still be there.
2. There is a version of cd_clint floating around that does nothing and is not a spyware. Replace your cd_clint with it and also exclude from spybot.
3. Use Kazaa Lite. Gives you a lot more options.

yeah, use kaaza lite. or i think the new version is called "clean kmd"

web site used to be http://k-lite.tk if thats not it, do a quick google search.

Exactly like kaaza but blocks RIAA ip address blocks as well as allows you many many more features. and best of all... NO SPYWARE

Visit the SpywareInfo forums (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?act=idx). Those guys can pretty much help you get rid of ANYTHING.

Just be CAREFUL with SpyBot. I've heard of too many stories to tell of SpyBot picking up things it really should not (i.e. device drivers etc.) SpotBot rocks but just make sure you know what it's deleting before you delete it.

And yeah use Kazaa Lite. Kazaa Lite is essentially a "hacked" version of Kazaa that removes the ad /spyware. (You can get Kazaa Lite by searching with Kazaa) Once you get it, remove the "Real" Kazaa...

I can tell you with absolute certainty that this is not the case. Spybot Search and Destroy is a fantastic piece of software that does an incredilbe job of removing and preventing spyware infections. To top that off, you can't beat the price.

I administer slightly over 120 machines at work, and every one of them has SpyBot on it. I also build a large number of PC's every year for customers, and I install Spybot on each and every one of them. I have probably personally installed well over 500 instances of Spybot S&D, and I have sent quite a bit of money to the developer to help keep it free for the rest of the world.

SpyBot is a top notch utility. If I had another hand I would give it three thumbs up!!

just curious, mind giving an estimate on that?

ps, i agree spybot works great never had any problems picking up things it shouldn't. and it always tells you this feature in this program might not work.

I had a problem with Spybot removing a needed dll when removing some crap called "VLoading". Could be fixed by now, I don't know. I still heartily recommend using Spybot and Adaware at the same time. Also try SpywareBlaster, it's free and it keeps certain spyware from ever even loading on your system. And it doesn't need to be running ("SpywareBlaster works by settings "kill bits" in the registry. These "kill bit" registry entries are set for the spyware ActiveX CLSIDs")

I got spyware on my work computer now...in over 4 years I've been here I haven't started getting random pop-ups until yesterday so now I need to do something about it. Spybot S&D has worked great for me at home but I'm in a dilemma. I'm afraid to install any software on my work computer(as we're on a network). Anyone out there have any suggestions on what should I do? Raddish?? I know you're a system admin so maybe you can help.

Just to let you know that I already have posted my problem at Spyware Info Forums (http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/) and waiting for someone to respond to me there too.

curious as to why being on a "network" effects your decision to install Spybot or not?

Don't worry, spybot won't install any spyware (;

You can try and track the application down yourself (view active tasks, etc.. reference the particular offender on google, eliminate it.) but Spybot is just easier. I see no reason not to install and run it, you can always uninstall it you know (;

Jockable,

thank goodness there are still users like you. Im tired of users on my networks installing kaazaa and the complaining that their networks are soo slowww on the internet. Well sir, your network is slow because your secretary has 112,038 people connected to her computer downloading the latest britney spears album. Anyways, im way off topic but kudos to jockable for taking the time to ask if there were any adverse affects to installing spybot on his networked pc. (i would suggest installing it, updating it and running it every time you see behavior like youre seeing today)

I just started using SpySweeper I got it at best buy for 9.99 they wanted to install it for me (for an additional $20), but I said I could handle it and I like it way better than adaware, but i am still going to use it with Spybot

Be careful with spybot, I believe it is more for advanced users due to the fact that it sometimes detects changes in your registry buy IE and Netscape that are not bad, and if you delete them The browser will stop working and you will have to re-install them. Adaware is more "idiot proof".

Cycnus: Well I did end up installing Spybot on my work computer and finally stopped getting those pop-ups. My IE works just fine and I have no more complaints.

btw, never had a problem using Spybot on my home computer either.

just a little reading takes care of it. whenever spybot finds an error with the program it always says warning doing this will stop x from working.

My 2 sense...I put Ad-Aware and Spybot on all my machines. I also Teach a class for Nubies through our local Community College and burn them onto cd's for students to take with them.
I have never had either program delete someting that I needed.

It could infact be a disk error that deleted your files Cycnus. By the way, do you check your dirve for errors and defrag it?

Ive installed and ran spybot over 200 times, never had ANY negative effects. I always run the update first. Just my 2 cents.

If you install software on your work computer, you should check with your help desk first. They may have a program that they already purchased (i.e. McAfee Anti-Virus 7, Norton Anti-Virus, etc.) that already takes care of spyware.

Furhtermore, they while Spybot is free to everyone, Ad-Aware is only free for non commercial use.
