I am pretty much a newbie and I have sent PM's that go unanswered. I was wondering if I had to post a certain amount of times before my PM's even go through. I can't find info on this, but I thought someone had said that so please let me know what the deal is with this. Thanks.

Yes - there is a mystery number of posts you must make before PMs are enabled. Nobody knows for sure how many that is, but keep on posting and contributing and you'll be able to PM before you know it.

Mr. SD knows, but he's not telling.

It's that way to prevent new folks from spamming via pm.

Question: how do you send someone a message?

Thanks!

Click on their use rname in a post, then from the drop down box select "Send ****** a Message".
Some people have disabled Private Messages (PM) or don't have enough posts to receive one, so that selection my not be available.

I believe you need something like 10 or 50 posts before you can PM someone to cut down on spamming...I might be wrong however since I did get a PM from someone with 0 posts lately..

What do you guys do about recieving a nasty PM? I would assume you'd block the person? Just wondering what to do (ignore it, of course!), since someone sent me a rude message.

Yes, you can block the user from sending you anymore pms.

If it's a particularly nasty message, you should forward it to a mod so they can take care of it. Even if you block that particular person, it doesn't stop him or her from sending the same type of messages to other.

i suppose it could be made more specific, but the fact that new members have limited privileges is mentioned here (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=33331&t=511057#anchf)

I had to do a lot of searching and digging to figure this out... It would be nice to notify new users that they cannot PM without a certain amount of posts... Kinda like they do with the Deal Alerts and the thread starting deal. Just a thought,

 Yeah, pretty much. If people can't rep you, then your reps won't increase. So you won't be able to earn the extra privileges that greater reps can bring, such as a larger PM box, more ignored threads, more 'personal stickies', etc.

 I think the quality of your posts is fine, especially since most of them so far seem to be in the product review threads, helping people. :)

And I'm glad you can PM now. See, that didn't take long ;)

No need to dig, just check out the SD FAQ MegaThread (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=70647&t=511057) under the New User (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=70647&t=511057#anchf) topic

According to the faq i should be able to have 300 PMs, as I have over 100 reps.

I just had 315 (not realizing I was over) and had to clear over 100 msgs before it would let me receive PMs again. It says I am now allowed 200, instead of the 300.

Did the number get reduced, is it a glitch, or other ________?

TIA

It looks like the allowed PM number has changed. Mine has gone up to 400, too. Perhaps they lowered the maximum for your post/seniority level. I'm sure a mod will be along shortly to explain. :)
