Has anyone had an iPod touch 2nd generation (the newest right?) I'm considering getting one basically to use as a really simple PDA and for WiFi access...thoughts? I have a Mac that I really like so I'm good with Apple stuff but want to know specifics on the iTouch

My son bought the 2nd Gen, and lets just say EVERYONE that sees it wants one.
As a matter of fact, my wife just bought one also!
I think they are fantastic. The screen is beautiful, its unbelievably thin.
The Apps Store is a nice addition.
The built in speaker works pretty well and is great for games.
The browser is very nice.
As a matter of fact, I think this thing beats the PSP...
If your going to get a Touch, I would definitely get the 2g
Only problem right now is no jailbreaking yet..

I have one. Yes, it will satisfy the need as a tiny PDA/web browser. Pocket friendly even with a cellphone and a wallet already there. I use mine to check websites before the day starts. Music isn't so great (but mind you, I don't like music quality or management on other iPods either). Video is awesome, though.
Oh, and it seems cool when you get it, but novelty wears off really fast (good marketing strategy for those trying it out in stores!)

About three weeks ago, I got a iPod Touch 2G 32gig from one the freebie site I've completed.
The device functions much like it's predecessor. The only difference is a external speakers and some new designs. If you're using it primarily as a music player, then this device is not for you considering it's price tag. With all the existing apps, it's a PDA, Gaming device, internet browser, GPS, MP3/video player and ebook reader. When you don't have connection to wifi, the device is only a PDA/iPod...

That's actually a question I was wondering about. Is there any application you can buy (or additional hardware, if necessary) to let the iPod Touch 2G work as a dedicated GPS system? Maybe download a streets & maps software package on the 8GB of space, and a GPS add-on so it can locate where you are?
Anyone?

i dont know what you mean by dedicated... but the 32gb has an application that is google maps on it, and it asks if its okay to use your current location... from there you can input directions to somewhere else. It would be great if there can be some firmware and addon in the future that will allow a "dedicated" gps and have voice guided directions like Sprint Instinct. But right now, there is none.

There is no GPS hardware built into the iPod Touch. It uses triangulation of WiFi sources to find your location. Obviously, it's not as accurate as GPS.
