A few Black Friday ads (<a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=1&t=964631">Harbor Freight</a> & <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=1&t=887819">Ace Hardware</a>) are starting to show up so we just opened our <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?sduid=1&f=41">Black Friday forum</a>. Come on in and join the fun.
To start it off, we'll do something fun and have a Slickdeals Pumpkin Carving Contest!! For our third Annual pumpkin contest, we are opening the contest site wide, so everyone go get a pumpkin, carve it, and <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/private.php?do=newpm&u=1">pm your entry to slickdeals</a>. After we get some entries, we'll host them anonymously in a temporary forum and put them up for thumbs up/down voting.
<!--more-->
Entries can be as creative as you want, but they must be PG13 and conform to our <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/sdmisc.php?page=aup">image rules</a>. Also, entries must have a placard somewhere that mentions Slickdeals 2008 in order to verify authenticity.
<strong>The rules: </strong>
<ol>
<li>Get a pumpkin.</li>
<li>Carve it.</li>
<li>Take a few digital pictures of that pumpkin, and host it online at a
site such as <a href="http://slickdeals.net/?sduid=1&sdtid=968093&sdfid=16&u2=http://www.tinypic.com/">tinypic</a> or <a href="http://slickdeals.net/?sduid=1&sdtid=968093&sdfid=16&u2=http://imageshack.us/">imageshack</a>.</li>
<li>A placard with the words "Slickdeals 2008" must be included in the picture to qualify for voting. [<a href="http://gallery.slickdeals.net/albums/2007_Pumpkin_Carving_Contest/pict0005ow8.sized.jpg">Sample from last year</a>, this year entries must include the year as well].</li>
<li>PM the link of your image to <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/private.php?do=newpm&u=1">slickdeals</a>. Do NOT post it in the forums. We'll post the pics anonymously. Submissions must be made by 11:59:59 PM EST, Nov. 1st.</li>
<li>Starting Nov. 2nd, we'll all vote on the best pumpkin carving! The poll will open the morning of the second and close on Friday Nov 7th. Extra 3 points for Slickdeals or Black Friday themed pumpkins.</li>
<li>Only one entry per person, please. You can choose to have your entry lit or unlit, but only one entry will be allowed. Once an entry is submitted, it can not be changed.</li>
<li>Please <strong>do not post pictures of your submission in this thread</strong>, or they will be disqualified.</li>
<li>The rules are subject to update for clarification if necessary. Here are the entries for <a href="http://gallery.slickdeals.net/view_album.php?set_albumName=2007_Pumpkin_Carving_Contest">last year's contest</a> and the winner was <img src="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/smilies2/whee2.gif" alt="" /></li>
</ol>
<strong>Prizes</strong>
This year we have some exciting prizes. We will pick a winner for the grand prize. 50 of the highest rated pumpkins will receive the runner's up prize.
<ul>
<li>Grand Prize: <strong>Dell Mini</strong>! + Black Friday T-Shirt</li>
<li>50 Runners's up: <strong>SD Black Friday T-shirt</strong></li>

cheaters? how so? there were no cheaters last year or the year before. just less competition because it was hosted in the lounge, which happens to be a public forum that did not exclude anyone who wanted to participate.

More publicity and a nice grand prize.
Someone could go to a nice pumpkin carving contest and find a pumpkin they like, bring an index card with slickdeals on it, and put it right near the pumpkin and take a pic. Hopefully nobody thinks like me and does it and ruin it for everyone. I'm buying my pumpkin(s) tomorrow. :bulb:

They're about $4 at WalMart. They don't charge by the pound so you can grab a pretty decent sized one at that price. :nod:

Isn't it defeating the purpose of Halloween to carve your pumpkin after halloween anyway? so in essence the mods are already giving everyone extra time by having it end AFTER halloween. Instead of taking the time to complain, you should take that time to carve...

for contest/voting purposes, this would be considered self-promotion.
if you do enter the contest, we ask that you refrain from linking your picture in your profile, avatar or siggy until after the contest have concluded.

How will the grand prize winner be determined? The announcement post here says: "We will pick a winner for the grand prize." Will it be the forum poll results as voted on by any registered forum user? With a prize valued at $350-$450, there's a real chance for vote stacking or outright fraud. Or does the SD staff privately judge and ignore the poll?
FWIW, a simple poll is really not the best way to run a contest when you have a lot of entries. Something like Fark's photoshop contest voting, where users can vote for as many individual entries as they like, is much more fair and also gives a better balanced breakdown of 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. placing. It's something you guys should think about for the future...
