Rep! I don't think I will win because I wrote an epic Short story about Black Friday in MSword that was 350 words that I condense down to 249. The only problem was after I submitted it, I read the contest rules was about what you do to make your Black Friday better not how it was...
Well it was fun writing a Short story about something like that.

Does it help if your name is Barry, and you tell them you don't shop anywhere else? And you buy lots of monster cables at full retail? :woot: Unfortunately, none of these stores are here in the Triangle, but thanks for the deal!

Here's my submission (Really):
"The day after thanksgiving is always a special one for me and mine. Bright and early, I gather up my six children, who are all handicapped and adopted. By their shining faces, it's clear where we're headed - Best Buy! Once there, we buy everyone the latest HDTV and a full set of Monster cables, with the Extended Protection Package to make sure our purchases are covered of course! Then we hook up with Geek Squad to make sure our installation is covered, and head back to the homestead for turkey leftovers and wheelchair football! It's an absolute blast."

Thanks for that, got a laugh outta me. You just put yourself at the bottom of the heap...they already know they're getting six TVs out of you, so they'll select someone who otherwise wouldn't go.

Yea I was thinking he should have said go to Best Buy to watch HDTV because we can't afford to have one at home because of the high medical costs from having handicapped children . . . that would have been the icing on the cake lol.

"Qualifying Submissions from each Participating Store will be judged based upon the following criteria: Creativity and Originality (50%); relevance to the stated focus of the contest (25%) and Readability (25%). Prizes: Twenty-five (25)"
Here's mine. Not expecting to win but I was bored
Like everyone, my Black Fridays are full of deal hunting and early morning adventuring. But because I’m not hard core enough to camp out overnight, I never seem to get those door buster deals. Except one year. Instead of camping out for my Xbox 360, I went into a local Walmart store near closing time Thanksgiving Day and hid in a crate with a bunch of stuffed animals. A few hours later the employees got to work and started stocking the shelves with the precious cargo. People were already waiting at the door. Deciding to play it safe, I waited until they opened the doors to sneak out of my cage. Then I made a mad rush for the 360s. I had grabbed two but a soccer mom tackled me and took one. I held on to the one I had left for dear life. I then hobbled over to register and whipped out my wallet to pay for my prize. It was quick and easy with Visa, thank God. After checkout I was faced with the prospect of getting back to my car. I went all in and made a dash for the ominous crowd. After knocking in to a few people and sprinting across the lot, I made it safely to my car. I then drove home and indulged myself in some gaming. The irony is that I got the three red ring of death error just two weeks later. It was a gratifying two weeks though.

With only one winner per store, I don't think I like my odds. If I thought I'd have a shot, I'd spend an hour or two composing some perfectly touching story about the miracle of the black friday puppies, or something.
As it is, I just tried to make them feel sorry for me, camping out for hours in the Minnesota cold every black friday / video game system release. (Which happens to be true.)

I wake up in the morning and thank my higher power for giving me yet another day to live. I then step over my 6 adopted dogs who are all snuggled and grateful for a place to stay. I walk into the kitchen feed my three blind cats and four lame birds who are so happy they are not in a shelter. I get my three-legged turtle named speedy a few leaves of lettuce and handfeed my hamster who is paralyzed from the neck down. His only want is a 42" Plasma tv from Best Buy, so I may prop his head up on a pillow and he can watch animal kingdom. Then I prepare a meal for my wonderful grateful family. Then after our thankful thanksgiving meal we so gratefully get prepared for our long awaited night in line at Best Buy. After standing in line for over 8 hours, if we do not get anything, thats ok. We are just so thankful to still be alive and are so very happy for others in line who got everything we wanted. Thank you Best Buy, we are so grateful for you making Black Friday such a not all about me, it's all about others time.

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone here knows how they would contact you if you win and what would happen if they contacted you by phone and you were not available? Would they leave a message?
Also, do you receive a conformation e-mail after you submit?
(As you probably can tell, I'm worried (If I magically won) about not being home/I messed up typing my e-mail xP)
Thanks in advance!

Rules say that the winners will be contacted by phone on November 24. It doesn't say what would happen if they can't reach you. I don't remember receiving an email confirmation, but that doesn't mean that I didn't. Maybe someone else can help out on that one?

Some posts from gottadeal today:
"I got a call around 1pm today, a lady said i had been chosen as a winner for the Dallas area. (thing is you have to live 40 miles or closer to the store for the hummer to pick you up, and i live 40.8 miles, so hopefully they will still ok the hummer, otherwise i'll stay at my moms and we'll get picked up there)
Anyway, she sent me an afidavate to fill out and fax back, saying i am who i am and that i'll allow them to use my likeness etc. you know, all that jazz.
She said around 2am on Friday morn they will pick us up and take us to the store (its an hour almost drive) where they will have a tailgate party for us with breakfast and champagne etc. I think they invite some from line to join, im assuming. Then were given a video camera to video our time as the winners, and when were done they take our camera and give us one unused, so they keep the film.
Then 30 min before they let us in, and each of my guests (my hubby 2 kids) each get a doorbuster ticket (as well as me) so we get 4 doorbusters, which means if i want 4 laptops, they are mine. 1,000 to play with.,..."
"I WON! I'm going to be going to the north central expressway in dallas, tx, they called today."

I'm from the ATL area, been urking me. I want to hear so bad. I figure they won't notify you on the weekend and it being after 5pm here...I guess I'll have to wait til Monday or bite the bullet and accept I didn't win :(
My entry is below.
I remember clearly the first time our annual tradition begun;
It all started when I was eight, and now, I'm twenty-one.
The parade is over, the Cowboys are on, and mom has just finished stuffing the bird.
Atop the counter rests the day's paper, packed with so many ads it's absurd.
Doorbusters, earlybirds and savings galore,
Overwhelmed and overjoyed each page is something exciting to explore!
Sharpie and highlighter in hand, the spreadsheet begins to grow;
Technology and electronics first, then clothes followed by gifts we will soon bestow.
Arriving at store one, Redbull in hand,
For hours hundreds surround us – they understand.
It's early, you're irritable, and the frigid temps are never forgiving;
Some call it Black Friday, but it's better known as the day after Thanksgiving.
Sometimes it's not just about the shopping, but rather together watching the madness unfold;
I promote the day to all my friends as a one-time experience that everyone must behold.
Finally the doors swing open, the masses rush in – all bets are suddenly off.
Scurrying aisles like rats in a maze, the holiday season has officially kicked off.
Before the sun comes up, it's all over and you laugh at those just strolling in,
Bearing minor scratches and the credit cards maxed, there's still a satisfying feeling from within.
The morning was a success, and again amidst the elements we were able to persevere;
Unloading purchases I look to my sister and exclaim, "I can't wait until next year!"

I am guessing the calls would have already gone out. The reason I think this, is due to the fact that they send you an affidavit to sign and send according to the 2 people on that site who have said they won. BB would have to allow time for the mail, so calling on the 24th seems really unlikely. We can "hope" though!

Good luck on Atlanta, Arball!
I got a call early-afternoon on Thursday, from the 763 area code. It was not a hidden number. It was also not from Best Buy directly, but from a third-party firm, presumably hired by Best Buy to run the competition. The phone call was followed up by an e-mail of an affidavit to complete and fax back.
My story was really a short fiction, based on my previous experiences in black fridays... Standing for hours in the dark, with dozens of strangers, a strange bond between us. Mind numb with cold and sleep, coffee clenched in my hands, yadda yadda.
Thanks again for the post, and thanks all for the congrats!

Here's my 248-word entry that was apparently not the winner in Baltimore. Booooo...
There is a frugal Marylander named Paul
Who loves cheap stuff most of all.
So early each Thanksgiving Day
He drives to the gas station to say:
"I need a newspaper to plan this year's haul!"
He scans ads on the living room floor
And prepares for Friday's big score.
Laptops and flat screens are there for the taking.
Cameras and movies, the deals have him shaking.
He wants one of each but alas, only 20 per store!
Football and in-laws create such a distraction --
They threaten to derail his precise plan of action.
Time passes slowly and then dinner is late.
How could this be? Set the table for eight!
He eats turkey and pie, but it brings no satisfaction.
He gets in the car and drives to Best Buy.
Soon, the big blue box approaches nigh.
He turns the corner; the sight makes him unsteady.
A line! How could it be here already?
He unfolds his chair and lets out a sigh.
As morning approaches, the temperature drops.
The hot deals keep him thinking warm thoughts.
At 4AM the first employees appear.
The crowd awakens and lets out a cheer!
It won't be long now until everyone shops.
At 5AM, with ticket in hand
He buys a new TV for just under a grand!
He adds the extended warranty (just in case)
And has Geek Squad install it in just the right place.
Thus ends Black Friday at Best Buy – the best in the land.

I think you two did a bang up job with your essays, very original and creative IMO. I seriously dont know how one could really be more original and creative. From what i have experienced, black friday is miserable and almost selfish (seeing those little old ladies getting trampled on the news each year). And, i dont understand how it could be a fun and joyful day (without winning a contest like this). I would be curious as to what a winning essay looks like.

I half way expected to lose this contest. i have been out of college for some years now and my writing abilities have faded. The only thing that disapoints me is reading the winning essays that dont focus on the topic, lack creativity, have fragmentes, run ons, and incomplete sentences. I could be totally full of myself and stroking my own ego on this one, but i would be willing to accept my loss if i felt my essay was inferior to the winning essays. I am sure there were hundreds of essays that were better then the selected essays. But, i guess there is nothing to be gained by sitting in a forum complaining about my loss. I will post my rough draft in a bit. i welcome constructive critisism, as it is benificial to us all in our writing future. Forgive me for rambling or if what i write doesnt make sense, i suffer from anxiety and had to take a double dose of my meds to prevent a panik attack. Jugger -- it happens. I once wrote a poem parody of "How do I love thee, let me count the ways" for a Mrs. Fields cookie contest. I thought it was really cute. The winning entry? "I like Mrs. Fields cookies because they don't taste like gefelte fish."
Okay, Mrs. Fields cookies don't taste like gefelte fish (at least I hope not, I've never had gefelte fish), but what were the judges thinking of picking that one?
OTOH, I've won a few nice prizes over the years from essay contests. . . trip to Europe, ice cream parties, so sometimes you just wonder what the judges were thinking and then store it away in case they run the same type of essay contest again.

Black Friday shopping has been a family tradition for nearly fifteen years. As a proud-parent of four beautiful boys, the holidays are really expensive. Therefore, finding the best bang for the buck is a necessity for holiday shopping. Black Friday is an ordinary day turned extraordinary.
As my children have grown older, so has the importance of being together. All they want for Christmas is to spend the holidays as a family. Thus, our Black Friday tradition has grown stronger. It has shifted from an extraordinary day of savings to a family’s saving grace. Black Friday has become a day the entire family anticipates.
Black Friday has become a game that the whole family enjoys. We begin planning for the big day several weeks prior. As Black Friday approaches, we each write a fictionalized character with individual tasks and place them in jar.
After we have our Thanksgiving dinner, we draw characters from the jar and carefully exercise our roles. Similar to a George Clooney heist film, everyone is assigned an equally important part. The creativity of each character never ceases to amaze me and we have a hysterical time watching each other. We have a lot of fun preparing and executing the perfect Black Friday.
It is an inevitable fact that our children will grow up to have lives of their own. Slowly, we grow apart and the chances we have to spend together decrease. Every opportunity given to spend with our children is a blessing. Black Friday has given us an extra chance to be with our loved ones and has brought my family closer together during the holiday season.
What do you think? this is my rough draft, i didnt save my final copy (this one is 272 words) anyways, i was competeing for portland. As i stated before, i welcome critisism.

Jugger -- def. better than the winner, but as another loser, my advice would have been to take out some of the "Black Friday" -- seemed a little repetitive to me, and to put a little more about shopping in there -- even if it's not really how you usually spend BF! And looking at the winners, possibly some mis-use of homophones and poor spelling might have helped too. ;)
A little closer critique would be--
'beautiful' is not quite the word I'd use for boys (I'm sure they are in your eyes, but to me beautiful is more of a descriptive word for girls) -- rambunctious maybe? charming?
"bang for the buck" is a cliche which I try to avoid using in a contest entry -- maybe the BEST money can BUY?

well, thank you. i understand what you mean about being redundant, that was something i changed in my final as well as removing beautiful to reduce the word count. i was hoping to appeal to people who have children. Anyways, thanks for your input.

Also, i was thinking of putting more about shopping in there, but i was trying to be more creative. I should have mentioned how great Besy Buy is since it seems that most, if not all the essays mention it. anyways, there is always next year and reading the winners essays will give me some direction.
I am not trying to say i should of won, i am sure there are plenty of essays that are so much better. I just would like to see justice served for the people who should have won (even if it wasnt me). That is what gets me the most. later and congrats to all the winners.

Thank you, you have been so kind and understanding. this is actually my first essay contest, kinda a disapointment. I really enjoy to write and should do it more to keep me up to standards. good luck in the future.

Hey, all - sorry to keep you waiting. The experience was pretty special. The fun was more in telling people, and inviting family/friends to attend (I was given 3 guests to accompany me). I honestly felt a twinge of guilt, cutting a ginormous line of people - but I felt better, knowing that my black friday items were brought in seperately, beforehand, and I wasn't 'stealing' them from other people, who were waiting in line.
The stretch hummer picked us up at 3am. We were given a camcorder to film the event, which had clips pieced into this (look under the post on 12/11):

We were 'pampered' outside of the store, with snacks, drinks, foot/back/neck massagers (homedics products) though we mostly hid in the limo from the bitter New England weather, until the store opened. We were allowed in the store 30 minutes early, and given $1k to spend - plus as much of our own $$$ as we wanted, of course. And spend, we did! My girlfriend and I did our xmas shopping for each other and for our families. We exited the store shortly after the onslot of people entered.
The event was followed, at least for me, by a call from Business Week:

The event for me was fabulous - not for the pomp, or they money - though that was spectacular - but for the stories. This Christmas, I get to tell people about *how* I got their presents. It was very special.
After the shopping, as we all piled back into the limo, it was brought to my attention that all we had been pampered with - the best buy folding chairs, massagers, video (Wall-E, in my case), snacks, drinks, et. al. had been given to us, as well - so we have a smattering of products throughout our home to remind us of the event. It was, for me, an experience for the ages.
I with you all the *best of luck* in applying next year! It was a special occasion - and I hope you all get such an experience.
Thanks, all, for your interest!
