I did some more research and stumbled on this:
If it can handle a Galaxy Note, I'm sure it will be able to accommodate my Galaxy Nexus with the Otterbox Commuter Case just fine.
Does anyone have good or bad experience with this iottie mount? Seems like it's got good reviews on amazon.com. The first one holds up to 3.5" wide phones and the second one only holds up to 3" phones.

You can get the newer version plus a case for around this price.
I paid 13.49 for mine a few months ago.

You can mount it in a lot of different places. The ideal surface is a completely flat surface though. If your dash has grooves/rivets in it it, even if very small, it wont like the suction all that much.
Here is the video from the meritline website done by exogear. It is not nearly as awesome it seems with this suction unless its a truly flat surface, but it is definitley versatile and IMO if you can make the suction tacky again will last many a smartphone/device.
I have read good reviews regarding that Mountek CD mount above: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...slickdeals
but I don't know if that can go horizontal, it doesnt seem like it.

It was on sale just two weeks ago: http://slickdeals.net/f/5106172-iPhone-Mobile-Phone-GPS-Exogear-Exomount-Universal-Car-Mount-Black-211-971-001-Regular-Price-29-99-Final-Price-16-95-ac-fs-m
Hopefully it will be on sale again soon.

Seems like I can orient the smartphone horizontally based on some images of the product on ebay.

|pupsicle||Nice deal, but it's annoying that they force you to create an account to check out. It should be optional.|

One of the reviews from the Amazon exclusive posted by Nizzy got me thinking. I really may just need a good smartphone mount that can grip my phone well with an extended arm (for positioning) whose end can accommodate a few velcro strips. The other side of the velcro strips can then be attached directly to my dashboard. It will look kind of hideous but believe it or not there are plastic velcros out there that are resistant to extreme temperatures inside the cabin.
If the mount slips around on the dash I would not want it. Could be a distraction to driver. Why not have velcro attached to dashboard with adhesive the size of round disk and round area on bottom of mount with attaching velcro. Should keep mount securely in place. I would buy this product at once.
