You are basing your opinion on these drives on second hand knowledge of a single drive failure.
Did your friend drop the drive? Did it fall off the table? Did he jam the USB connector in the wrong way and ruin the drive?

My brother and I both grabbed the 1.5TB version of this on BF of 2009. I had to RMA mine in the week following the purchase, but since then both his and mine have functioned perfectly.

I opened the enclosure to remove the drive.
It's a Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 which gets ton of bad reviews on it's own.
$119.99 @ Newegg
$132.99 @ Amazon
What we got was a good deal on a bad drive. I checked the drive's S/N on Seagate's warranty page and it is NOT covered separately. Seagate's page said

This went on clearance weeks ago. Most people bought this drive at $69 since the cost of HDs has been high since the flooding.
Meanwhile, SSD's keep dropping in price. Go figure.
BTW, does anyone have instructions on how to remove the drive from the enclosure?
