|zapatista||Another great alternative that's not much more money is a Pentax Q. Similar size sensor and image quality is better in my experience. There's just something fun about using and old 50mm f1.4 adapted lens and getting a 275mm eq. telephoto out of it. My main camera is an OM-D (m43) so I'm not hating on Olympus.|

I think it was the predecessor 990. It was (at the time) a pretty nice camera for 3.34MP and was putting out better pics than my 5MP camera at the time. I don't rem what I had but mine was "name-brand" too.

The lens cap has been serviceable for me. I've heard that there's an aftermarket replacement with 3 blades that open and retract with the lens (it stays attached to the camera at all times). That sounds interesting, though I wouldn't want it to interfere with the control ring.

This camera is excellent except for two things:
1. The auto white balance is absolutely terrible. Use manual white balance (and don't trust the menu ie. "fluorescent" setting doesn't always work for fluorescent lighting, "daylight" doesn't work for daylight, and so forth). I find that most of the settings are way too unnaturally warm.
2. The lens cap is as bad as everyone says it is. It refuses to stay on. I can knock it off with one air shot from my squeeze ball lens duster.
Otherwise, pictures are as good as I've seen from a sensor that small.
Annnnd it's no longer on sale... Still awesome under $300

This may prove useful if you're on the fence: dkamera.de compared the XZ-1 to the Olympus PEN E-PL2 .
The results were surprising, with the XZ-1 often producing superior results to the m4/3 E-PL2.
