So I purchased the official samsung MHL 5 to 11 pin adaptor (http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/...FU10BEBSTD) for my Galaxy S3 along with the Miracast dongle.
The Miracast dongle worked great with the exception of some video lag playing an 3 gig MKV file using MX Video.
However, when i proceeded to test out the MHL adaptor... it didn't fit! The body casing of the 5 to 11 pin adaptor is a bit on the thick side... the Otter Box Defender case has too small of an opening at the bottom where the micro usb port goes. I imagine other people with cases on their phone will have similar problems. Therefore, i had to open the Defender case and remove my phone to plug in the adaptor.. not too practical for day-to-day use. Got to test the adaptor with an MHL cable i got off ebay and it worked perfectly. the same MKV file was sharp and no lag!
Here's a workaround i decided to buy a micro USB extension cable so that the 5 to 11 pin adaptor will no longer need to plug directly into phone. I'll first go with the extension cable, plug the adaptor to the extension, and then thirdly plug in the MHL cable. sure it sucks to have so many connections. but i'll be enjoying my video content on the go when needed on the big screen!
this might be a worthwhile solution for folks to use too. just wanted to share my experience.. and for you folks that ask why bother when i have the dongle.. i don't intend to carry the dongle with me everywhere.. just leave that at home.
link to $8.37 [SHIPPED] MHL cable that (worked with my samsung 5 to 11 adaptor):
link to $1.99 extension cable [SHIPPED] (so you can get around the body casing problem i described above:
In summary, combo of what i mentioned above is cheaper than the all Samsung solution here... that is, unless you were able to take advantage of the original 50 off deal.. the result will be the same. [$39.99 no discount... + 3.95 more for shipping]
happy miracasting and MHLing !
thumbs up to OP for sharing deal.

However, it works pretty damn well. I connected my ps3 controller via sixaxis and tried out dead trigger, shadowgun, some psx and n64 roms, and all played without lag (or very minimal).
