|MrCookieBar||Great deals on basic PCs. Grandparents need PCs too.|

Everyone focused on the poor 660s deal and didn't notice that there are some additional deals, including
the Special edition 8500, tonight at 8PM EST, for $999. There was some pervious discussion of this
item being added to the Outlet inventory (same item?) or it may be with a slightly different build - So some confusiion: Anyway thanks to Slvrfox, there is a discussion which is relevant for this up-coming deal,
No one has posted it, I think. Another (I hope different) 8500 deal has just shown up, mixed in with all this mess. Basically they took the i5 8500 deal for $699, and upgraded it to the I7 8500 deal with a $100 discount! It looks like it has 2 more hours to run.
I still hope the SE 8500 for 8pm, EST - will be a good deal (I hope!) - All I want is a look at it. Don't get your hopes up too much.

How hard is it to take that desktop back to Windows XP? Is that even possible (I have an extra, never installed copy still).
That machine is pretty appealing to replace my wife's 5 year old desktop (possibly a latitude?). She's a general internet & word processor user. The only thing out of the norm that she does is lots of pdf & spreadsheet work (works from home on insurance filings). Nothing like video or graphics editing (and no gaming for sure). Her current computer has never had a problem with the heavy lifting on those spreadsheets/pdfs. What do you guys think of going with the $250 model above or that $379 660s deal out there as well. Of course the $379 is a better system...but also 50% more!

Depends on the hardcore video..

This is a usable machine, there's no doubt.
But it's not worth $250. I got 6GB RAM and a 3rd gen Core i3 and a 1TB HDD for $260.

|kwadguy||Yeah, unless you plan to use this for either hardcore gaming or hardcore video/photo editing, this is a perfectly fine machine at a good price.|

This is a very low-spec PC, but it does not deserve a thumbs down. This is cheaper than anything you can normally find on the Outlet on a typical day. The SFF is a plus in many situations. This will work well for many lower-income/underpriviledged folks (retirees, fixed-income, working class, self-supporting students etc.). If necessary, you can easily do a memory upgrade for $20 or so when the next RAM deal comes around.
Hell, as an HTPC, this will smoke many/most/all? network media players/media extenders/bookshelf systems that cost upward $200 if you can live with this not-so-large form factor. You can use it as a combined HTPC / file server if you plug in external drives into it. Add a CableCARD tuner if you have cable TV and save monthly fees for your DVRs.
Possibilities are endless. Yes, most of us do (or at least want to) buy better-configured systems for this. If you can afford something better, go for it by all means. But this certainly does NOT deserve a thumbs down.

More than enough for most people's basic need. Don't need more for a facebook/email machine.
