My son has autism, and while he does not test positive for celiac, (we had the biopsy done) he still has severe abdominal pain and a huge behavior change after eating even trace amounts of gluten. Just because someone doesn't test positive for celiac, doesn't mean a gluten free diet wont be hugely beneficial, or even necessary.

I used to eat wheat all the time as a kid but in my late teens/early 20s I started having stomach issues. I never gave much thought to it and just learned to live with it as normal and put up with it for years. Well I'm 29 and recently it started getting worse, my stomach would randomly get itself tied in knots and it would hurt to go to the bathroom and clear up afterwards, sometimes my stomach felt like a hard rock in me for days. I went to a doctor and they found I had elevated liver enzymes and sent me for an ultra sound which scared me to death, but they found nothing and he was stumped. Well it made me wonder a year later when I ate a bowl of pasta one night and I woke up to a severe case of itching all over my body and my face and hands swelled up like Shrek. I NEVER had anything extreme like that happen to me before.
Putting 2 + 2 together I decided to stop eating wheat. No less than two weeks and I already felt like a new person, ALL my stomach problems disappeared, no more pain, no more big D word, I used to also eat tums like candy and haven't touched the stuff in the almost 3 months now since i've been off it. I also lost an inch or two on my waistline not feeling bloated all the time.
The reality is what doctors have been misdiagnosing for years as catch-all terms like "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" or "Crohns" is more than likely the result of our diet. I truly believe we have poisoned our food supply in the name of profit by companies like Monsanto and this is coming from someone who is a raging conservative and usually laugh off most hippies.
Yeah there are alot of people buying into "the fad" who really don't need to but I'm convinced modern wheat is just not good for anyone and it effects different people in different ways, some worse than others. I'm not bad enough to the point I can't have a bun grain flake off into my meat, but I know the pain I used to experience is gone and that is not something you can't just will it to go away with your mind like a placebo. Also I have been "glutened" a time or two since coming off it and lo and behold, the bathroom runs and pain returns which confirms my suspicions.

I have a wheat allergy. I'm an adult, not a kid. I have to eat gluten free. I don't want to have to eat gluten free. I would surely love an occasional KK donut, normal bread, Ho-Hos, Twinkies... Aside from giving up certain foods, GF is expensive to buy. It kills me to pay $$$ for faux foods that don't taste the same. If you eat gf and feel better health-wise, no one should judge.

|lipsofnangel||So what's the real deal with frankenwheat or GMO wheat? What does it REALLY do to us? Is there even any way to avoid GMO wheat nowadays? Is that what organic is? Non-GMO?? I have no clue, BUT my grandmother was diagnosed with Celiac not too long ago and might appreciate this deal. I can eat regular wheat, for now, I guess.... Like others have said, this is pretty expensive compared to regular products.|

I love how people think being Gluten-Free is healthy. It can actually be quite the opposite. Celiac disease isn't fun and it isn't a diet by any stretch of the imagination.
In for 4 so I can have party treats for my family with celiac. I can normally buy them at a local discount retailer for $3.50/each so this is a nice savings.

|Justawannabe||This "Fad" I feel is based on truth...there is a spectrum of sensitivity with celiac at the end. People can be sensitve to gluten and yes after reading Wheat Belly I feel the same about the prevalance in the last 50 years due to frankenwheat.|

Some of this info is so wrong and some of it is so right. I actually have celiac, almost died from it as a baby in 85. Funny thing is most of the people these days are just simply not celiac patients. Chances are if they actually got a biopsy of their intestines they wouldn't test positive for celiac.
Now to the taste and the product. Someone before said gluten free = tastes like ass. That is actually not too far off. Most of the time if you see it's vegan and gluten free and that means its going to be terrible. People who do vegan and gluten free are the health nuts and the people who most likely do not have celiac or any gluten intolerance.
These mixes are some of the better gluten free products you can BUY and not make yourself.
It's absolutely worth a shot. I add ingredients and they end up tasting great. A little peanut butter, extra sugar milk eggs and butter make things taste better
I love reading these threads as an actual celiac patient.

At the risk of repeating myself: Only 1% of all people really have celiac disease..This fad will one day blow over and people will be left scratching their heads and wondering what they were thinking. Not that they'll learn to stop listening to everything people tell them; its only natural to follow the herd, lol.

I see a doctor who is a professor of medicine at a major university. According to his research, wheat gluten causes an auto-immune reactions to some extent in 95% of the population. When he told me to stop eating it, I thought it was hog wash. But 18 months later, after eliminating wheat and several other inflammatory foods that he recommended, my autoimmune disease (with a poor prognosis) went away and I feel better than I have in 5 years. My blood pressure dropped within two weeks, my LDL cholesterol dropped 50% and I lost weight without trying.
By the way, I think these gluten free products are a nice treat. As someone else pointed out, they are by no means healthy food. I eat them occasionally but not regularly. But I never knowingly eat wheat gluten, not even as a treat. The immune system reaction to eating wheat just one time can go on for weeks. It's just not worth the risk.
