Different strokes for different folks. The mythology of it all was what drew me in.
To be honest my Anime Tastes don't typically follow the "mainstream".
One of my all time favorites is still .hack//sign, which was quasi mainstream, but I hardly hear it mentioned anymore.
I will be honest, I own blu-ray copies of many of the sets I have on DVD, and the quality difference isn't always that noticable. Animatied films/TV shows seem to upconvert quite nicely. Granted I am by no means a videophile and I sit over 8 feet away from the screen. But at these prices I couldn't pass on some, as the Blu-Ray discs can take a hell of a beating. I found my 7 year old in my collection the other day. Long story short I was not happy I had to get some of my favs resurfaced at my local pawn shop!

Beg to differ
Man...figures the Fullmetal Alchemist price keeps dropping. I need to hit me some lotto! Good post, OP.

anyway, if those of you watching on Netflix can stand to read subtitles and listen to it in Japanese (or even any other non english language track) i'd recommend trying it at least once. firstly, not every female has a gigantic lisp when they talk. if voice actors got paid as well as japanese ones did, the quality would probably go up.
anyway, sword and sorcery, i'd recommend Record of Lodoss War.

I'd rather read manga instead of watching anime, but here is a decent search engine:
Also note that a LOT of anime/manga are simply not licensed in the United States. There is a huge underground fan sub/translating community.

I don't claim to be a 'purist' or any of that hogwash, but the voice-acting in dubbed versions is very hit-or-miss (I tried looking through the reviews to see if there were comments/praises for the dubbed voice-acting). I got through about two lines of dialogue in "Samurai 7" before having to turn it off.
And although some of the same titles ARE available on DVD and Blu-Ray with subtitles, there are many cases where even these versions are dub-only.
I'll browse through the selection from Amazon - thanks for the post OP - but (sort of an aside) I'm still very frustrated that a Blu-Ray box set of Cowboy Bebop has not been released.

|physcodbzfan||yes, there are tons of anime popping up on netflix, but they're are dubbed. I tried watching Trigun last night on Netflix, gotta say, the dubbed version is terrible!!!!!!!! The jokes, the action doesn't come across as well...buy the dvds instead or watch the subbed version somewhere else!|

I finished watching Secred Blacksmith and loved it, but it feels incomplete. No second season?
Anyways my old time favorites:
Rourouni Kenshin (Samurai X)
Magic Knight Rayearth
Recently Watched on Netflix:
For girls... my mom loved Candy even though she doesn't like Anime
There are some other good ones I i've watched, but I can't recall their names.

Or maybe it was the same price as now and I'm remembering it wrong.

Full Metal Panic Series is good. FMP:Fumoffu is funny.
No one mentioned the Ghost in the Shell Series.
Karas is a pretty good one too. Darker that Black is a good series.
Black Lagoon too.

So... basically the cartoon network anime block of several years ago is on sale + nicktoons?
I enjoyed FLCL but you are getting a lot less for your $ (FLCL only 6 episodes) compared to entire series of Avatar.

Surprised no one has mentioned Slayers. Pretty much just swords and sorcery. A bit old now, think 90s, and can be quite silly at times, but was fun to watch.
First three season boxset appears to be $30.49.

I think this may be the most underrated anime of all time. Rarely mentioned, but fantastic plot and character development. I couldn't stop watching it.
Also, in case it wasn't mentioned yet, Escaflowne is kinda cool too. Somewhat swords and magic, well Earth and Gaia, but def not sci-fi.
