VLC works, as does MPC-HC. The thing is you've got to make sure you are using the GPU hardware acceleration.
Here are some instructions that will help you.

(I'm assuming you're not talking about the 900MHz Celeron from 10 years ago, but rather the fairly modern Celeron 900 series) The Celeron 900 @2.2Ghz is faster than the E-350 CPU (Passmark score 760 vs 731), and 925 @2.3GHz is even faster (Passmark of 862). And since those are single-core Celerons, they will be about twice as fast at single threaded (read: most) tasks.
But it is more complicated than that. Without GPU assistance, none of those CPUs, except maybe recent Pentiums are going to, for example, play back HD Flash and x264 videos reliably. Because all E-350s have a built in GPU, any E-350 will. And even with the built-in GPU, the E-350 only consumes a fraction of the power of the other CPUs alone - adding a GPU makes it even worse.
So which is faster really depends on what you are trying to do, and how the Pentium and Celeron PCs are equipped. I think more people, though not everyone, would be better served by the E-350 in their laptop.

Unless you are planning on running Maya or Photoshop but i think 3gb should do it.
The programs that i will be running are not Ram hogs so i am ok at least

|theredspecial||Anyone recommend upgrading the RAM on this past 3 GB? Is it really needed?|

Have you experienced many CPU failures? I've been doing tech support for 8 years and I've never seen one, not even in Apples which run hotter than this netbook. As far as I can tell, the CPU is the most durable and reliable part in a PC.
Also, what CPU throttles at 60?
I think you're the n00b, dude. You just don't know it.
