Just called Amtrak Guest Rewards for the details on the Autotrain. Dont be leary of calling, the have wonderful customer experience and the representitive was extremely pleasant to speak to. Autotrain goes from Lorton, VA (30 mins south of Washington, DC) to Sanford, FL (20 mins from Orlando). 16 hour trip. Train departs station at 4pm, arrives at destination at 8pm. Points required for travel (all travel is booked one-way):
10,000 points per vehicle
5,500 points per coach ticket
15,000 sleeper cabin (holds up to 2 people, no coach ticket needed if cabin reserved)
I plan on reserving a cabin and taking my car. So I was quoted 25,000 one-way for a sleeper cabin, my car, my girlfriend and myself who are taking that the trip. Roundtrip will be 50,000 points. Thats a pretty AMAZING value.. considering 25,000 points barely scores a roundtrip airline ticket these days. And 50,000 points is usually the price of a unrestricted roundtrip domestic airline ticket for ONE person. If you want to put value to the points.. most airline miles are worth about 1-2 cents each.. meaning 25k miles = $250-500 for the airlines.. and 50k miles = $500-1000 for the airlines.
Even with these miles being valued at 2 cents a mile.. converting them to Amtrak points and taking the Autotrain to Florida for Xmas vacation. I'm still only spending 50k miles for what would be a $1650 trip if I paid cash. That means these 'converted' miles are worth 3.3 cents each on Amtrak (versus 1-2 cent each with an airline).

|dvdapex||My wife and I each have Continental Airline miles accounts. Does anyone know if we can transfer from our separate airline mile accounts into one Amtrak account?|

|supergirll8075||I've never taken Amtrak but I'm interested in swapping some miles for Amtrak rewards. Does anyone know what "Coach Class - Special Routes Reserved/Unreserved Coach / 1000 points" and "Coach Class - Northeast Zone Coach Class - Northeast Zone / 3,000 pts?" When I click the descriptions I can't decipher what it's saying...I created an account and pretended to book a trip but when I clicked "redeem" it simply said I do not have enough points for the trip but didn't say how many I need.|
