The GPU in the Thinkstation W isn't too great either --I'd get an x58 Clevo with a Xeon and Quaddro if I were in the market for a desktop replacement.

I don't think these laptops are meant as workstations... hence the lack of any Quatro or Firepro cards. If you need that much firepower, you should really be looking at Thinkpads (albeit, they aren't as light or portable as the Z)
I'm also a gamer and an engineer, albeit a software engineer, so GPU isn't really a necessity, as long as the laptop runs an external monitor i'm pretty much happy in this regard. I don't see the dock as a bad thing, but to each their own. There's a vibrant community at the notebookreview.com sony forum where I would say 75% of the people there are there because of the Z
