Make sure to also open and test if the screen lifts. Nexus 7 made in August 2012 or later don't have this issue. The ones made in June are problematic.

Also, I did some researching, and to answer my own question, I do not need to root the device so long as I have an OTG cable and purchase an app called the Nexus Media Importer (runs about $2), which will allow the tablet to read almost any external drives you plug via the cable.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Just buy the slower dual core Samsung Tab 2 7.0 and 7.7 or the $170 Thinkpad Tab. I'm sure you or your cousin doesn't to waste time on setup and use an cumbersome OTG cable. to view camera photos
I have a Nexus 7 and ASUS TF300, but my OTG cable is coming in a few days.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but was wondering if experts out there could please help me out.
I want to buy one of my relatives in Cambodia a Nexus 7 8GB. I'd like to buy a Micro USB OTG Cable so he could use a flash drive to expand the Nexus 7. I want to send it to him unopened, brand new in the box, but I'm hearing conflicting reports that in order to mount a flash drive you have to first root the Nexus and then install the Stickmount app. Some people claim to have it working without rooting.
If the tablet reads a flash drive right out of the box as long as you have the OTG cable, I don't want to open it. But if it needs to be rooted and then install that Stickmount app, then I would have to do it for him because he's not tech savvy.
So, my question is, do I need to root the Nexus 7 first for it to read flash drives connecting to an OTG cable or is everything working right out of the box without the root? Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Here the one line build.prop edit to enable rotation of the home screen.
I also tried the Tablet mode change in that thread which uses a dpi change and hated the changes in icon/font/etc size. There is apparently a much better way of switching to tablet mode which keeps the original 213 dpi but it takes additional effort. Info is here;
Note the pre-requisites in the 2nd post. I *think* this will work with the current stock ROM with just root but you have to make the ROM "DEODEXED" as described in item 2.
Stlll on my todo list...

|Mummel||I recall Jobs saying 7" tablets would be dead on arrival. The guy was a genius. I suspect he will be right. I'll be waiting for the N7's bigger brother.|
