The AMD 965 BE is a great little chip. TD had them on sale with no rebate a couple of months ago for only $69.99 AND they also threw in a free TT CPU Cooler. Was an excellent deal.

|huskybuc||I would buy from Amazon (I did a month and a half ago at the same price). That way you know that you're getting the retail version. I almost pulled the trigger at Tiger Direct before I realized that it didn't come with the heatsink or fan.|

HyperTransport speed is better with an AM3 board, and the ram is DDR2 on a AM2+ versus DDR3 on a AM3.
A 965 X4 is more comparable to a third gen i3.

|el66||The AMD 965 is a very good chip, but not at this price. I am using the 965 now. Overclock to 3.9 Ghz with basic air cooling. I paid $69.99 a few month back.|

Glad to see Newegg finally matching MicroCenter's price on that cpu....which MC has had for months.
Good deal for those without a MC near. Now if only Newegg would give you a free mb like MC does with the cpu.......

Personally I'd go with a 955 since it's physically the same processor as the 965 but with a different multiplier which is unlocked anyway.
I own a 955 and with a pretty low end aftermarket CPU cooler, I was to overclock it to 3.8 GHz. With better cooling one can reach the 4.0 Ghz range.

My laptop has an A6. Once the laptop gets old, I will go AM3 or whatever the new standard is at that time.

Offically, it works in AM3, AM2+, AM3+ boards. Which CPU is in your laptop?

I've got my 965 (paid $90) cranked up to 4.0ghz with air cooling with no problems whatsoever. I primarily do video editing and rendering using 2 SSD drives and a 1 TB storage drive with 8gb RAM. This system blazes; sure it would be great to be even faster but just not necessary for me.

|Vaporizor||This isnt really a deal, more like what a 3 year old processor should retail for. Imo this processor isnt worth more than $70.|
