I should say that I'm not saying that this is a bad deal. I'm just saying that you'll probably be left with wanting more, if you really care. Something is better than having nothing at all. For me, I love being able to watch my home on my work computer or on my iphone. I also like being able to see on my tv who is at the door without actually getting out of bed on a sunday morning.

We are looking for something to watch our exterior garage entrance (not car entrance) & was thinking of a motion activating flood light/cam to SD card that Costco also sells for $159.
But that seems a cheap ass way to do things & this looks more robust & bullet proof.

Borrowing these pictures...
700TVL analog camera
2MP IP Camera. Yes, better than a 1.3MP camera, but you get the idea.

|ny518||I installed a system like this 3 years ago. Same brand and size HDD. Quality is ok, and that system is still running today, albeit with a new DVR. I paid $199 back then for a 500gb DVR and 4 cameras (2 were indoor/outdoor). I would expect to pay no more than $200 for a modern set, especially since the DVR is not that big when you are recording at a level high enough to capture faces and license plates.|

You'll be left with wanting more. Megapixel IP Cameras is the way to go now. Way better picture quality and ease of being able to record it remotely at another location.
Here is an example of a better system. Way too expensive right now...I'll break it down for you...
Look at this http://www.costco.com/Q-See-4-Cha...67205.htm
These cameras / nvr / dvr are all made by Dahua out of China. That being said, you'll find the same cameras sold under different brands, like Q-See. Dahua does not sell directly to the end user.
These cameras go for about $200~$225 a piece. Right now Costco is selling a (2) pack of these 720p cameras for $299.99. A few days ago they had a (4) camera package with a 4-channel nvr for $699.99. That expired this past Sunday, I believe. Q-See ran out of stock of the 4-channel packages and substituted out the 4-channel nvr with an 8-channel nvr. Score! It was a limited number. Alone the 4-channel nvr (most of the time without a hd) sells for about $300. If you broke down the above 4-camera package that Costco had, you essentially were paying $100 for the 4-channel nvr W/ a 1tb drive. Now, imagine what kind of deal the people who got the 8-channel nvr got! Slickdeal! BJ's is currently selling a 4-camera package with an 8-channel nvr for $1,299. Linky
For many people, the 4-channel nvr won't be enough. Oh btw, this Q-See nvr has built in PoE ports already, so you are kind of saving money there, maybe around $60, if you were to buy a 4-port Poe switch. The 8 & 16 channel nvr's still only have 4-Poe ports on the back of the nvr. You'll have to supply your own PoE switch or PoE injectors if you want to run more than 4 channels.
Q-See has said that a 8-channel package will be available at Costco in early 2013. It will probably be (4) 720p cameras with an 8-channel nvr. The cool thing about this nvr is that it will do 720p and also 1080p. Costco should also be carrying the 1080p cameras sometime soon.

|ibnuts||Thought 'HD' in title was HD resolution, rather than HDD for 'Hard Drive.' Why is HD resolution so expensive with these systems?|
|11-16-2012 10:24 AM|
i picked up a q-see set from costco a couple months ago.... same configuration with 8 cameras instead of 4 for $399....
the system is up and running and works great!
i like how i can easily access my dvr from any computer or smartphone...

Thanks for posting, but that and "Costco" would have saved me a click.

This is a pretty bad post. No idea the deal is good or not since I read title and pages of the OP and still can't find the price.
And especially OP copied pages and pages of useless info about the product which is not necessary. Should have summarize the features since no one going to look through all this.

|i3ighead||I currently use microsoft lifecams thru blueiris for my security, but it isn't running as well as I would like. Cameras work intermittently. I am looking for a better solution. Any feedback on this and ease of installation?|

Q-See 4 Channel Security System with 500GB hd 4 High Resolution Cameras
I just got this, I think it's an incredible deal, no expansion though.
4 Indoor/Outdoor Rated 600 TVL Cameras, PC and MAC Remote Viewing, IPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry Viewing via Free App, 120' Night Vision, 60' Cable Per Camera
4 Channel DVR
500GB Hard Drive included
PC and MAC Remote Viewing
IPhone, iPad, Android, and Blackberry Viewing via Free App
4 indoor/Outdoor Rated 600 TVL Cameras
120' Night Vision
60' Cable Per Camera Included
What can you see about 120 feet away in the dark? - Probably not much. Let the four included security cameras in this bundle do the work by capturing detailed activity with a broadcast quality D1 view. The cameras are equipped with an infrared cut sensor, 600 TV lines of resolution, 42 infrared LEDs and a 120 foot night vision range. With the included 500GB hard drive, you can save numerous hours of video, and the industry-standard H.264 video compression allows for maximum recording time while minimizing file size.
Video is captured in real-time, broadcast-quality D1 704x480 pixel resolution at a rate of 30 frames per second (per camera), which results in smooth, continuous video motion and a larger D1 video image for improved recognition of people and objects.
You can save your vision for designing a top-notch recording schedule that will meet your specific home or office security needs. Do you want the DVR to record 24/7? – No problem. Set it to record on any day or hour, or set it up to record during motion detection only. The latter may buy you a little more space on the pre-installed 500GB hard drive and allow for days or even weeks of video footage.
The QT504-441-5 DVR+Camera bundle puts you in control of your security. If you’re committed to protecting your premises, you’ll appreciate the mobile surveillance features that allow you to view live footage via the Internet or a Smartphone.
