Drop $60 to $100 on a 'cheap tablet' if you want, but as soon as they break it you'll regret not getting something that is actually designed with being dropped an infinite number of times in mind.

|Creepy Lurker||Last year I was on the fence between this and the Nabi Tablet. We went for the Nabi and my boys love them. It's basically an android based tablet designed for kids. They have a ton of parental controls, educational games, you can upload any android apps from Amazon or Mobile1, and my kids have dropped them dozens of times and they are still fine. You can also put it into "Mommy Mode" (via a password) and all of the parental controls disappear. It's absolutely great. Definitely check this out if you have a kid over the age of three.|

My first generation leappad croaked within a year and the games were super expensive, not to mention all the apps from the leapfrog website. I bought the original iPad from a family member for super cheap and that has been the best thing for my then 4-year-old and now he's 5-1/2 and still plays it all the time. I save a lot of money with the free apps and can buy good apps for cheap. If you can find a cheap tablet, go for that instead. I haven't used anything other than an iPad, so I can't comment on any of the other tablets.
Cases for the original iPad are cheap too -- less than $10.

|Shakes2070||Fcking walmart site would not let me checkout an hour ago and now oos. They blow. Thanks for the deal. For a three year-old, no reason to spend the extra bucks for a Leappad 2.|
