Pretty much all of the wooden train sets are compatible. Brio is probably the best made if you appreciate a higher level of quality in your toddler friendly toys. They are not much more expensive than the other junk.
Shnoop has been running quite a few Thomas sets lately. Picked up Gordon and James, bith with tenders from them recently for $16.
One word of warning, there are 3 types of Thomas sets.
The Wooden Railway are the ones comapible with the wooden track of almost all makes. They are made of wood so they are safer with rough kids, but are not supremely detailed. They have some motorized units that get really poor reviews called "Battery Operated Thomas" and such.
Take and Play are die cast metal, so they have a littl emore of a Matchbox model car feel. The trains can hook together either way with their 2 sided magnets. They are much too narrow to fit wooden tracks, but that doesn't keep them from finding theri way on to the wooden train table. They just can't roll well.
The Trackmaster is theri real motorized line, and they are cheap looking plastic. They will fit on the wooden tracks, but get stuck a lot.
Biglots has a buch of Take and Play, as well as Trackmaster if you want just a little cheaper than big box stores. Selection is poor. Got cheated on their mail in free train set offer. yeah, not happy.
