To each his own. The overall story was dumbed down in each successive ME although I found the character stories in ME2 quite good, enough for me with the improved mechanics that I preferred it over ME1. In ME3, I found both the overall and character stories very lacking. And the universe felt much more closed to me in ME3, with a lack of hubs, besides the citadel. No Omega hub, no Asari homeworld hub... just one place to repeatedly go, over and over.
I'm not the type to complain that Bioware is terrible, or trying to milk people (although the DLCs may say otherwise). I didn't care if the ending was happy or sad. My main problem with the ending was that it was so incredibly, incredibly stupid (on several levels).

Yes, ME2 made some improvements over ME1, like side-missions were a bit less repetitive, but for me the negatives far outweigh the positives. In ME1, if you wanted to you could hold long conversations with the other characters, while in ME2 they apparently didn't think that was an important aspect anymore and many characters just keep repeating the same lines...
so - Nah, from what you say confirming what I thought about ME3 it's not worth $15 to me Maybe for $5 somewhere down the line... preferably used

I liked ME1, and liked ME2 even more so. But I understand the viewpoint that ME2 was 'dumbed down' and ME1 was the better game to some. Several RPG elements were minimized, which I missed. But overall I found the game mechanics improved and I found some of the character stories and loyalty missions making up for the lackluster overall story.
Unfortunately ME3 is even further dumbed down, basically into a full-on shooter with a tiny, tiny bit of RPG elements left remaining. The dialogue wheel has been simplified, or in some cases removed altogether. Side missions are.... eh... let's just say not exactly fun... and the new characters couldn't have been possibly any duller.
I expect many who defend the game, and especially those who defend the ending, are more the shooter types who prefer action over story. I don't mean this as a negative, as everyone has different tastes. Just mentioning it, as it seems like you preferred the story/RP elements over shooter action, and sadly ME3 was lacking in this and had several major flaws, way before the ending problems.
All that said, it is worth $15. just keep your expectations reasonable.

I've been waiting (a long time) for like a Mass Effect 1-3 box set with all DLC, etc.
I wonder if it will ever happen or if I'll be left disappointed.

I thought ME1 was awesome, great story, great characters and environments, ME2 for me was a huge disappointment, everything dumbed down for the 'shooter-crowd' but all-in-all still a pretty good game. ME3 I've heard is even worse, so I've stayed away from it. I'll prolly pick it up from a used bargain-bin somewhere down the line to finish the story (even though everyone says the ending is about as stupid as it gets)..
