Came in yesterday.
The packaging was great and judging from early shots, the lens is great. the autofocus motor sounds a little muddy, but that may be because I'm so use to the canon motors. Otherwise great deal!

|weaselweasel||Took another chance on this lens. This time around it paid off with accurate focus on my Canon 5D2. Thanks OP and Buydig.|

Mine came today. Not happy with the packaging at all. The sigma box was in a much bigger box with no padding. It was moving freely about the package. I'm lucky that the lense doesn't seem to have been harmed.
Will have to check later, but I think I got a decent copy judging from some quick handheld shots. I did not look at them on the computer yet though.

Great lens for a great price.....already have one otherwise I could have bought this one. I have no problem using Sigma 50mm and very happy with my lens....if you are thinking to buy a 50mm....go for it...this is better value for your money and build quality is pretty close to Canon 50 1.2 for about 1/3rd of the price.
Thanks OP for posting this deal.

|dhishi||Thinking of getting this but heard about the warm tone on potraits is pulling me back. Is it true that this lens creates warm tones ?|

If you're suffering from serious whitebalance issues, you may want to invest in a passport colorchecker.

I didn't use the 1D for a long time but now when I use it the automatic white balance is horrible. I know your 1D was different but it's in the same series. Sounds like you don't have that camera anymore but did you feel like the AWB was significantly worse on that body compared to current bodies?
I don't know if I was just oblivious to how bad the white balance is or if something is wrong with it.

|jdang307||Sigma is hit or miss when it comes to focus. Sending it in may help with your chances.|

Just because a lens is off a bit doesn't make it a bad copy--both lenses and bodies come out of the factory within specific tolerances and can still be considered good when off. I used to have a 1ds2 that made most every lens backfocus in comparison to my other bodies. Helps to have a body with MA capability
Keep in mind that you've got 5 years worth of recalibrations and repairs--but if I got a lens that was seriously off (say more than +/-5), I would just send it in for a replacement from the retailer.

Just to make sure I understand, you want to be shooting with the camera at an angle to the ground, and focus on a fixed point on the ground (i.e. the base of the tree). And the expectation is that the grass in line with the base of the tree should be in focus. If the grass in front/behind the base is in focus, then I got a bad copy. Correct?

|traydragen||Bit the bullet on this lens. I've read some great reviews on it and if you get a sharp copy it is an amazing lens. Looking forward to using it, thanks OP!|

If you shoot close (say 3ft-5ft), you're not going to get reliable results, because 50mm lenses are known for suffering from focus shift. 50L is pretty notorious for it. Sigma 50 and Canon 50 1.4 also do it closer to MFD.
Grass surrounding the tree makes it pretty easy to determine where the focus actually is. Check both left and right sides--look for decentering defects. Easy to spot.

In fact, regardless of what people tell you, call and ask. Just because someone says they won't do it doesn't mean that they won't. I called and they agreed to apply the coupon after the lens shipped.
As for that filter, I didn't even bother to investigate it. I'm pretty positive a free filter is going to be a crappy filter. And you don't want to put a crappy filter on this lens.
