Should have trusted my gut instinct! Even though I know darn well that Black & Decker makes cheap, plastic crap, I took a chance on the 12" trimmer.
After unboxing it last night, the moment I tried to tighten the locking collar on the unit, the plastic split and therefore rendered the entire thing useless. Checking B&D's parts site, you can't even replace that one part. It's part of the main unit, so it's pretty much junk at this point.
Back it goes!
But when I contacted VMInnovations and asked for an exchange (not even a refund) they first offered me a $10 partial credit -- even though I clearly stated that the device is BROKEN and UNUSABLE.
AVOID BLACK & DECKER PRODUCTS!!!!!!! THEY ARE CHEAP CRAP!!!!!!!!!!
ps - The trimmer came disassembled (as expected) with the batteries and other parts floating around freely in the box (unexpected). They were poorly half-assed wrapped in bubble-wrap and tape which didn't hold so the bubble-wrap was floating around in there as well.
If you take a sheet of bubble-wrap, please an object in it, then fold the wrap in half and seal one edge with a single piece of packing tape, you still have two open ends for the object to fall out of. Duh.

Homelite UT43120 16" 12-Amp Electric Chainsaw, one review from homedepot.com:
"Has one major flaw; in its gear box is a plastic gear (RING GEAR) which fails after so many uses. I have owned the product 2 years very light home use and it conveniently went just after the warranty expired. The part is about $7 + s&h but is currently is back ordered. In the end this product was designed to fail."
Just an fyi.

|louisiane||In for one Ryobi Curve RY26500. Can't stand my electric trimmer - it doesn't cut very much or it takes 5 or 6 passes - I liked the low noise factor though but too much hassle.... goin' for the noisy gas hog|

OK, I'll bite. Ordered the B&D String Trimmer as the electric one I bought in 2001 has pretty much fallen apart.
Thanks and repped!
