I sent a Lenovo for repair under warranty a few years ago and it was prepaid. I did not have to spent a cent on shipping.
I have a Toshiba Protege R835 series laptop and it gets very hot. It has recorded temperatures of 100 degree Celsius when I multitask (have many programs open) and Toshiba USA will not do anything about it although the issue is well documented in many online forums. My HP has cool sense technology and the temperature was in the seventies (never exceeds 80 degree Celsius) with the same amount of load.
Plus the paint ( the black coating on the plastic just below the key board (in either side of the mouse pad) is bubbling (Blistering) and flaking off and I can see the white color materiel and it looks really ugly. Not the one you would expect to see on a high quality business laptop! The laptop is 18 months old so I have run out of options although my credit card has extended warranty for an additional one year
Bottom line: Think twice before you get a Toshiba. I agree it is damn cheap but is it cheap for a reason. Toshiba is forced to offer excellent promotions to push their products out due to low demand

I've worked as a computer tech for several companies over the years. There is nothing in your statement that is out of the ordinary or egregious in my opinion. That is all pretty much standard fare. No company is going to pay for your shipping cost for whenever send in your laptop for repair. Just like if I had a bad hard drive, i would be expected to ship in the defective HDD back to Western Digital or Seagate for their warranty repair/exchange.
Sorry to tell you this but you will roll the dice with any laptop and you would not have received any special treatment or different experience by purchasing a different laptop.
