I probably fall in the minority here using Sony A300 to test out the two Sigma lenses I got so far. Here is my story.
I had ordered from BH Photo last month and my results were, needless to say, disastrous. The focusing was terrible - more pronounced at high openings. I must have took 100 pictures and then gave up. I was testing it with the A300. I played around with different AF settings - center focus, live view, non live view etc but none of that helped. I decided to take a chance and sent the lens in to Sigma - just the lens - after I spoke with them. They sent it back after recalibrating it last week. So here comes the moment of truth, right ? Well, the results were still about the same. May be they got slightly better but I doubt that. What made it worse was, even at high speeds, the image seemed out of focus even though I locked in on the focus.
I had no issues whatsoever using the A300 with other prime lenses even at high openings. (Well the highest I could ever do was 1.8 on the 50mm). So I thought it must be the lens and not the Camera
In the meantime while this was going on, I ordered an another copy - this time from Amazon. I got the lens and started to test it and got about the same results. I then wondered - holy c$%$% - is my luck that bad ????
Then I realized I had an another Sony body lying around - A230 - so decided to try that with the lens I got from Amazon. Guess what ? It produced spectacular pictures as I was expecting all along ! I limited myself to mostly 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 and the colors, focus was just amazing. I did use center focusing and this camera, by the way, does NOT have live-view. I do not know if the live-view is messing it up on the A300 even though I did try it using the view finder with the same disappointing results on the A300.
Also, this lens from Amazon does look a bit sharper than the one from BH Photo. Colors and sharpness are as vibrant as the ones from the Sony 50mm (which I think is the gold standard)
I will continue to take few more pictures to confirm am on the right track. I dont know if I had sent in my A300 body along with the lens from B&H (as opposed to just the lens) may have fixed this issue but then there is that sharpness issue as well.
There is no question I wanted this lens baaaadddd. In the end I think it was worth it. I am about 80% confident that I have a good copy - with some additional testing, I would like to see that bump up to 100%. I did not want a lens with focussing issue something that is not under my control.
I cant believe this lens can go upto 1.4 - I thought I had to shell out thousands to get one of those.

Does anyone who purchased this lens also have a Rokinon 35mm f/1.4?
If so, how would you compare them? (from personal experience)
