I have mine on a Sony Alpha so it's still screw driven. So yes, it makes noise. I would consider it loud for a church or other very silent venue. But it's fine around my sleeping kids. I also have the Sigma 50 1.4 HSM which has its own motor, that one is definitely both faster and quieter though still not absolutely silent. But for their prices, I think both Sigma lenses are absolute steals.

We will see who reigns supreme for the Rokinon/Sigma/Nikon 85mm (1.4/1.4/1.8G) shootout I'll be doing this weekend.

I really love the Sigma build & finish, with HSM being faster than Nikon SWM for sure. it's a pity that IQ does not justify keeping it in the end.

|nodinero||I have this lens and it's pretty good, sits on my camera about 80% of the time. Perfect for indoor shots and portraits from 1-3 people. Mine has a very slight front focus but not enough to toss it out. Personally I really like the bokeh coming off this lens.|

|Jayro||I don't know if I got a bad copy, but I'm not crazy about the quality of the bokeh. When I make a shot go out of focus... the bokeh "smears" slightly to one side instead of blurring straight out. It makes it look like I took a brush in Photoshop and smudged the background. When comparing with my canon 50mm 1.4, the canon was sharper and had a much nicer bokeh. But I do like the wider shot I get with my crop sensor... so I'm happy for the price I got it for.|

I use this lens as a walk around lens. The bokeh on this lens is great.
If I need wider shot, I ll just use my cellphone.

I would be on this except for the crooks.
Ebay screwed me out of 60 buck five years ago and I haven’t given them a nickel since.
I have this in the 50mm flavor, the pictures are crisp, At 1.4 you can blear the front or back ground like the big kids.

No brainer for Canon. Per Thom Hogan, not so good compared to Nikon 35mm 1.8:
