Well, just wanted to update this thread. I see there were several other deals on this device after this thread was started, but since I mainly participated in here and not the others, it only seems fitting to update here.
My serial cable came today and I began the journey of reading the forums to figure out how to un-brick this thing. I wanted to know how to do this to have piece of mind in case it goes south from a future firmware, moviesheet update or some other thing. The good news is I was able to do it. Mine was one particular problem so I don't know if I can universally repair all problems but it does seems likely that it can be done for most bricked devices.
My problem was solved by issuing the following command at the command prompt from the serial connection:
What happened though is that I didn't plug in a USB with a firmware into the device so it seems to used a stored one which apparently was for the WDTV Live Plus. It appears the previous owner flashed a custom firmware for the Live Plus on this SMP and bricked it.
Anyway, after rebooting, it displayed on the screen to plug in a USB with a firmware and at that point I did so with the latest SMP firmware and it updated and work...albeit it was in French. After changing the language back to English it seems brand new.
For less that $5, I would strongly advise that you get a serial cable for this device and keep it handy.

Has anyone had an issue playing files off of a usb drive? All I get is a rotating arrow that loops endlessly...
Netflix works fine.

|vwtoys||LOL. Got the replacements from WD to replace the two dead ones. 1 dead on arrival again!!!!!! The other one booted up fine and I even upgraded the firmware. That was magical...now on to WD again to pay for return shipping...the saga continues...|

|2devnull||well, my replacement checks out OK. Fingers crossed that they continue to work well and not experience the bricked condition out of the blue.|

The replacement ones also have the same leading serials
we shall see if these actually do anything other than the splash screens...
I even asked her, "so you will make sure these will work, right?" Of course she said yes.....

Also, your numbers blows away my original theory that there may have been a bad batch. It is most likely this amended theory that is the issue.

Ordered two through WD. BOTH are DOA! Startup screen and then no signal. Left it plugged in for 15-20 minutes....
Just wow...so much for QA at their refurb facility. They probably just reseal the unit in plastic and send it off again.

BTW - a dud unit is basically the ones being received by WD or the Amazon sellers where it just shows the WD Logo upon boot up and then nothing. It doesn't even show Loading...., pretty much like there is nothing there to properly load or something corrupted preventing it from loading.

|2devnull||Cool, the replacement WD sending me is S/N starting with: WNC4226. Should receive it later today.|
