And it's worth keeping as I use my ipad 95% of the time and the chromebook the rest.

However, there are often upgrades as Chrome continually changes.
The file transfer takes a little getting used to if one is not using the cloud and a direct USB.

I own one of the earlier Samsungs. Bought it because it came with the 100mb free wifi. Used it quite often at airports when I had to do quick emails before boarding a plane. Love my Samsung for the long battery life, quick startup and is integration with Chrome. My office contacts and calendar is pretty much virtual and I am heavy user of Google software. Quite decent on videos so it serves other purpose while on plane. Most importantly, I do not have to worry about virus. So I used my Chromebook for surfing while using my laptop only for business websites.
I cannot imagine anyone buying a Chromebook with the intention of hacking or upgrading it. That is silly. By the time you hacked and upgrade, there are far better options based on total expenditures.

Which do you prefer? I'm a bit concerned about the Samsung because it is arm, but the weight, battery life and portability are a big plus as well...

Intel's current branding is: i7 > i5 > i3 > Pentium > Celeron
Typically (Since Nehalem):
-i7's are hyper-threaded quad-cores with 8-threads or the non "QM" laptop ones are pretty much i5's
-i5's are either hyper-threaded dual cores (laptop) or non-hyper-threaded quad-cores (desktop), both with 4-threads
-i3's are hyper-threaded dual cores without Turbo Boost
-Pentiums are dual-core w/ 2 threads without Turbo Boost
-Celerons are typically similar to the Pentiums with reduced cache size.
