I like nighttime photography as well as depth of field and hdr. I like it all except portraits and studio work.

they're VERY different? how could anyone answer that for you without knowing what you're intentions are? i purchased the 8mm because for what i'd be using it for, and the focus depth issues make it a good deal for me. i'd never purchase the 35mm because i'd never want a mf only lens in that length.

Is there seriously a discussion going on about the merits of autofocus?
Guys, this isn't 1972. Autofocus is a tremendous asset. Anyone who says autofocus is a "no-no" is a giant tool.
Manual focus is great, too, but let's not discount the value of having a machine quickly and accurately judge what's in focus, and in many cases, be able to track and adjust while the subject is moving, automatically.
You choose a focus point on most cameras - there will be a small box that indicates the focus point, and usually you can move the box around.
