There are a total of 23 MicroCenters nationwide, which means probably 90% of SDers don't live near one.
And every really smoking deal I have seen at MicroCenter is in store only.

My Ipad 1st gen can play 'Need For Speed: Most Wanted" very well and that is a fairly demanding game... The only time I notice any slowness is in the game menus. And 99% of apps (both game and non-game) are not anywhere near that demanding. Of course the game looks even slicker on the iPad3.... The game turns out some extra effects (for iPad3; like reflective surfaces) but nothing that I really miss on the iPad 1st gen.
It's worth noting that NFS: Most wanted is about 1.5GB in size, which does speak to the issue of going for the larger capacity models like this deal... I think most games will begin to trend much higher in size due to eventual Retina conversion/upgrades.
However, since this is the last major OS version that Apple will perform for the 1st gen, the term "obsolete" is valid within that context (in regards to 1st gen only). But technical obsolescence and real-world obsolescence are two very different things.
I'd have to say that IF the iPad 5 is coming out in the next few weeks, it would be worth waiting to get an iPad 4 on clearance (or even the 5 if it's earth shattering). However, if the iPad5 is not coming out until Autumn then this is really worth a very serious look. Problem is that Apple is not saying anything about timelines (they never do) so release date is all speculation. IMHO iPad5 is probably gonna happen in the Autumn. My (guesstimate) is based on the fact that Apple may not want to encourage the view of a 6 month refresh cycle as that has already impacted their sales numbers... Also, the 128GB refresh of the iPad4 would have been a (differentiating) selling point for the iPad5 (and Apple loves those... They use them to get people to go for the next model). And let's not forget that an Autumn release will make the iPad5 the "must have" Christmas item for a great many people and will allow Apple a whole new level of "massive backorder" bragging rights. (And they love bragging rights as well...since it is great for (free) marketing).
But again for me, the issue is that the iPad 1st gen is satisfying 99% of my needs currently, so I am actually in a position to wait as long as needed... still I am very tempted... mainly for the added benefit of using the iPad3 with Apple TV mirroring, etc. But in either case, I would say the iPad 3 is about 3 years from any real level of obsolescence. (Even longer if we are talking in strictly real-world terms).
In any case, this is a great deal for a brand new/sealed iPad3... heck, Apple does not even sell them new anymore!
Personally, if I had my druthers, I would want a 15" iPad.... but I'd settle for 13" !!!
But I am in the opposite situation, I mainly use mine at home.

People steal smartphones on public transit all the time.

It's all in what you want and can afford. I did not want the new Ipad because of the connecter. I have an Iphone 4 and did not want to use different cables for charging. Down the road, if I stay with Apple, i will probably have to deal with the new connections, but for now, I am happy with my Ipad 3.
Also, if we waited around, for the latest and greatest, we'd never buy anything. Let's face it, you can't keep up unless money is no object.

Not sure what else they could do that would be dramatic other than add an sdcard slot or increase screen size. The processor and resolution are already more than enough.

|Tazmania99||Since iPad 4 wasn't really a big jump from iPad 3 in terms of specs, Apple must launch a stunning iPad 5 in order to continuously compete in tablet market. I sense that iPad 5 will have a lot more plus than iPad 4, not to mention that iPad 3 will be obsolete when iPad 5 is available in the market. It won't be long from now, just few more months.|
