Surprisingly they come with a beautiful bamboo box covered by bubble wraps The knives are sharp and classy. I have to make sure I will not be cutting my own fingers. I am happy for the purchase.

Whenever I hear her chopping or cutting, I hear a CLACK, CLACK, CLACK...
she insists on cutting on the hard formica counter. No number of cutting boards will disuade her. The edges of the blades simply 'roll over' into a 'j' shape... and I am sick and tired of sharpening them with my ceramic rods.
So much so, that I bought a... oh, I'm gonna get slammed... very hard and brutal sharpener and run the blades through every few months; and DONE.
Furhtermore, I bought her a set of Chicago Cutlery knives (so that they'd be easier to sharpen or throw away). She said "I know what these are... and I don't want them".
My daughter took them in a new York Minute!

This thread is full of opinions and anecdotal reports from people who have NOT compared 30 brands of knives side by side under controlled lab conditions in single-blind tests, Again, empirical lab tests by the unbiased Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) found that one model of Ginsu knives is a little better and costs 60% less even when it is not on sale. Consumer Reports' empirical lab testing found that:
1. the Shun knives are better than average, just not quite as good as Ginsu knives
2. The Shun knives cost 60% more than the Ginsu knives
3. If you like to pay more than double for a product that isn't quite as good, these Shun knives are you. If you want to call that a "slick deal," you have freedom of speech to call it whatever you want.
4. Maybe buying Shun brand knives and other overpriced brand names boosts some people's self-esteem. Probably no more expensive than seeing an effective therapist, up to a point.
Some people are impressed by inflated MSRPs, and get excited when WAY overpriced items are put on "sale." Such people rush to buy Shun knives in a "deal" like this, in between running to Kohl's to buy the great "deals" there, or front page "deals" on shampoo or cleaning products from Amazon, which instead are free or money-makers at drug stores every few weeks. The rest of us should be happy that so many chase these "deals," leaving the real deals for us.
Bottom line is that Consumer Reports tests quite often find far less than perfect correlations between price and quality/durability/reliability/performance.

What is the point in trying to bring up a 5 dollar steak knife? Will it cut the meat? Sure. Is it as high a quality blade as what's posted here? No way. Lower quality blade, lower quality handle, I'd like to say not as durable but I'm not this set's durability but none the less. Some people would like to use knifes that have a higher quality than one that is priced at < 5 dollars.

|antsmarchn||I don't buy the Shun hype. If I want a Japanese knife, there are plenty of better brands. For good steak knives I really like the Laguiole brand and you can get them as low as $20-25 a knife if you shop around. I am also a fan of the Wusthof steak knives. I won't get into the straight vs serrated edge debate, but any good piece of meat should be easily cut with either. Also, I know some purists are anti serrated blade due to it ripping/tearing the meat, but I am about to chew it up, so I am not so concerned.|
