"Variances in policies" is a contradiction in terms genius. Listen up now, you might learn something. Costco is an international retailer. Their success is based on standardization of everything from the cafe menu to pallet dimensions so the inconsistency of which you were drivelling on about is really an issue of non- compliance.

Butcher shops? Ehhh...generally almost double the price of the chain markets. Quality is great if you're going for prime convenience cuts, but I'd rather eat four pretty good steaks instead of one really good one. And if I want really good, the prime beef at Costco is much, much cheaper than prime beef anywhere I can drive to.
I'm sure if you live within 20 miles of a major cattle processing town, the beef prices are probably favorable towards small independent shops and local chains. I do live in the middle of such an area, but the Costco beef and seafood prices near me are unparalleled by markets.
Freshness is also a factor. Costco turns their food faster than just about anyone. I've never had a problem with picking up a package of meat or seafood and seeing it was expired or about to expire. I can't really say that for the local markets. Quite a bit of what I pick up there is near or past its expiry.

My home was $1000 and my car $500 every six months, and I had pretty high deductibles with Farmers. Ameriprise quoted me $780 for my home annually and $260 for my car. Plus the $100 cash card for the car insurance. Plus some freebies both on the home and car like lockout and home glass repair.
$1000+1000+625 (home, car, health) = $2625 for Farmers and Kaiser
$780+520+350-100 = 1550 for Costco
Theres my next 11 years of costco membership paid for in first years savings. And Ameriprise and Aetna (the car and health underwriters) get very good grades, so its not like I'm paying less and getting crappy coverage or service.
I have to say I wasn't really that comfortable with Verne Schillinger as my insurance company spokesperson.
Here's the link to the $100 cash card for the car insurance deal.

I always enjoy it when minimally intelligent people volunteer for service on the ignore lists of thousands.
Truth is the vast majority of costco's don't ask for the coupons a vast majority of the time. Nothing else the guy said is wrong.
And if you hadn't noticed, store to store variances in policies is pretty much the norm, not the exception. Ask anyone who's tried to do a price match at best buy or staples, or those multiple layered coupon deals at target.

My costco normally takes them right off automatically by scanning a coupon at the checkout they have taped on the register. I don't know if this is because I'm an executive member or if they do that for everyone. But a couple of times a year they demand you cough up the coupons...sometimes just one, sometimes all of them, and one time the guy insisted I tear each one out. After about 15 minutes of fumbling with them and complaining and having 6 people in line behind me screaming at him, he gave up and just scanned one. That may have just been an employee issue, because frankly I haven't seen that cashier since then.
A couple of times a year they won't let you leave big things in your cart and do a process of moving everything from your cart to another empty one. But they haven't done that to me in a while. Maybe just looking at their shrink stats to see how much the cashiers and door checkers miss, stuff thats under something else?

|einstrigger||Executive membership + Costco Amex Business card = Winning. You get two checks at the end of the year (one from Costco and the other from Amex). The check from Amex you can cash in at Costco's customer service counter.|

|akarchangel||I personally love costco, but I am curious about all the posts about their meat department being cheaper than the grocery store. What grocery stores are you going to? I'm in central PA and meat/seafood are about the only things I wouldn't try to get at costco first since they always cost more there. I agree that the prices suck at the big chains like Giant, Safeway, Wegmans, etc... but all the single store and local chains around here blow Costco and the big chains away in price and service. Costco's quality on their meat/seafood has always seemed excellent, better than the big chains though no better then the local stores I go to. Maybe it is just around here, but if you think Costco's meat prices are good, you might want to check an actual butcher shop or 2.|
