A couple of cons.... it was definitely sluggish, not only compared to newer tablets, but even my several year old Touchpad w/android felt zippier. And it basically has the worst OS I've seen (yeah, I know it's android, but amazon's special flavor of android). I even liked WebOS and Blackberry tablet's OS better than this. The Carousel thing is rather annoying.
Speakers were very tinny to me, and you had to hold the tablet a certain way to get a reverb affect to increase volume. I also noticed what appears to be a yellow tint to the screen -- it was clearly visible during streaming playback vs other tablets. I am not sure if this is a fault, or just how amazon calibrates colors on its tablets, but I didn't like it ... it felt like true whites were missing.

I really don't understand how you can have your panties in bunch before even trying to research a topic?

|Namelessme||Is there any way to get google play working on this, without rooting? And ideally a way that won't get overwritten if amazon decides to do an update.|

It looks like the rooting process won't work unless you install CM10.
Even with the OTA block script my Tablet somehow managed to auto updated itself yesterday, killing root in the process.
Considering that and the fact that there is only one active developer now and one custom rom option so far, I think I am going to return it and buy a Galaxy Note 9 or Nexus.

I'd love to know the exact process you followed. There are probably many of us here in the thread. If you've already pieced it all together, it would be awesome if you could drop the necessary links in the right order here for us Thanks!

I did notice if I hold the tablet a certain way, with hands cupped near the speakers, they do improve somewhat, at least in volume. I guess they are designed with the idea people will hold the tablet a certain way, or propped on a table -- I have a netbook like that too. Although for the netbook, there is an audio setting in windows (I forget what it is called, some equalization thing) which can increase volume regardless of speaker positioning. I do wonder if there are any software hacks or if rooted with android, if the speakers sound a bit better.
I should add, it's not like they are super terrible. It's just that I expected a bit more from them -- no bass at all, really. For those used to iPad speakers, this will most likely be an audio upgrade to you.
