Right tool for the job i think someone said recently. I want the transcoding for remote access when Im traveling, which is what the slingbox is made for plus it will give more functionality and access to cable.
But i was planning on replacing cable box with cablecard hdhomerun and that complicates it.

With all this talk about transcoding, perhaps this brings up the point of not putting everything in one basket. I use to use a monster box for my transcoding, storage, gaming, displaying, and recording needs. But that meant that I had to keep the fan-filled box near the TV and not in the cool basement. It meant that I had to keep it on all the time, despite most of its power not being used during much of the day (experimented having it come on and off based on demand but that was a nightmare). It meant that any maintenance or upgrades will disrupt all other functions, which is certainly very disagreeable to the wife.
Transcoding is not that important to me these days since portable devices are getting more powerful and I can get cheap players for each TV like a Boxee Box and soon the Ouya.
And most importantly, I value my data and feel better owning something optimized for that task than a general box where a crashed or cpu-heavy program can potentially corrupt my data. I own a Synology and the only thing I have running on it is crashplan.

You are just diverting those bits that would have been written to the 640x400 window straight to ethernet, same with audio if the source is DD or DTS and your pc only has stereo it's transcoding it. Reroute output to ethernet bang done.
What is the heavy processor need? Maybe nobody does it that effectively? Recreating a new file structure before throwing out the wire?
Took me a minute then it came to me...Oh wait compression before it goes out the wire I bet, that would take a tiny little dedicated chip that isn't there. I get it now, nevermind.
I'm sitting here thinking damn man the hardware in the blueray player isn't that complex and it can play and simultaneously transcode to lower res outputs too... Oh well. I'lll "Macgyver" it and ssh into tiny linux arm cpu pogoplug which is my server, to remote control tiny set top streaming device reading off the pogoplug and feeding tiny slingbox. No computer involved anywhere, all under 5w ea.
Project for a rainy day... All the software already exists, plenty of internet remote programs for the streaming player, all I need aside from those is some string, a stick of bubble gum, and a tootpick.

I don't mean upscale 1080p to an uber high resolution display, or to give me some elevated post processing goodness, that might take more. I don't want 720p or 1080p output, or to even keep any output to disk, I want whatever low res temporary stream output would look best but stream easiest to my phone or a small tablet. And I want to do it on minimal power of course, which maybe you're right not happening either way but you tell me. Lets say 640x400 if you have to pin it down to make it happen, certainly not more than 900x540.

Its external in usb3 case but if you want internal take it out of the case.
i use one, good fast and quiet.
You wont find a better deal for a while anyway.

I owned couple NAS and QNAP is still the way better choice. the overall buit quality & the recent unique feature is very improssive.
You can store and playback the content in 1 machine. Just connect the box TV through HDMI then it comes with XBMC and Chrome browser. Drob and synolegy dont have it

Edit: I do run a laptop as my frontend now, a p6200 gateway with integrated video, but if heat output is any indication of power use this 17" lappy must not be very efficient while playing any video or doing much of anything. It has a 90W power supply i think, and both ps and lappy get hot aside from at idle.
I need ultra low power setup for a motorhome, off grid, solar.

I have recently built a totally silent media PC around this:
At idle this consumes ~8 watts with 830 SSD and I couldn't make it go over 15 watts no matter what I did.
It depends on how you pick the PSU. For an application like this, I would pick a pico PSU (no more than 120 watts) with an external AC/DC brick ala laptop. You can get optimal efficiency that way throughout your range.
Again, you can run on old laptop if you want. What I did, was replace the mini-pci wireless card with SATA raid card and presto.

You may be right I'm honestly asking. My last server/htpc is was a multipurpose gaming/htpc/server and that was a really really bad idea. Quad core Xeon core2 based overclocked with a hungry gaming card on top of that. I didn't have a meter to measure use but it had to be bad. Computer power supplies are usually 80% efficient often less, and if you are running idle it's at it's worst efficiency rating.

A G530 on an Intel H61 board will idle at ~15 watts and Dual Core Atom Intel board will idle at ~8-10 watts.
Drobo specs specs their NAS to idle at ~12 watts without drives.
I, personally, use an old Core 2 Duo laptop that idles at ~ 5 watts.
So power is not an argument either.

Synology has a better reputation, larger feature set, reliability, and future DSM upgrades will yield even newer features.
