|YankeeRedneck||I stopped eating pasta 6 months ago but if I was going to eat that stuff again I would definitely go to Carrabbas. Been going there for 6 years and never had a bad dinner and the staff is always top notch. The cesar salad is to die for !!|

|Birls||Just an FYI for those who don't already know. The take home meal is actually a frozen meal, you just have to bake/microwave it. It is not a fully prepared meal that you take home and put in the fridge. Still tastes all the same though. It is a good deal.|

I consider a 'processed food' to be one where the ingredients are many, lots of them aren't that good for us, and taste and high calories trump nutrition. One of the mainstays of my diet is "am I getting some good nutritional value per calorie here, or not". If not, I don't eat it, or I eat very little of it from time to time.
The study you linked is a great example of what is wrong with nutritional studies. First off, they ask people "what did you eat and what exercises do you do?" and people lie or simply make stuff up because they don't really remember or because they want to tell the study data gatherer what they think they'd like to hear. Next they eliminate data that doesn't fit with their hypothesis. Intersalt removed almost 40% of their data because it was from people who said they ate plenty of salt and were healthy. The study authors stated "we presumed they must be lying, so we removed them from the study". Sadly, the data they removed was probably the only truthful data they had. Ancel Keys removed over 80% of the available data from his lipid theory study where he 'proved' that fat was bad for us. The other data showed that health improved with the consumption of quality saturated animal fats. What he proved is that a highly processed diet of sugar and starches will kill you.
The particular study noted that people who ate lots of bacon, sausage and 'processed' meats also smoked, were often overweight and didn't exercise much. Thats the cause of the lower lifespan and health issues, not the bacon. Nobody has ever done a study where two groups of healthy people were put on a high red meat/ham/bacon diet and one was put on a high grain/starch diet, and with all other things being equal the meat eaters were less healthy. EVERY study done was one unhealthy group vs a healthy one, with what they ate taking a big back seat to the rest of their lifestyle. This is akin to the 'discovery' that flossing your teeth improves your health. What that study really turned out was the proof point that people willing to floss their teeth persistently also took better care of themselves in other regards, and the flossing was irrelevant.
Another fun one was the recent study 'proving' that the mediterranean diet is healthy vs the traditional usda food pyramid diet. I think what it proved is the food pyramid diet is unhealthy, and the mediterranean merely less so.
The press never vets these and just wants the headlines. "xyz linked to instant death" when 'linked' means 'poor correlation achieved only by data elimination, leaps of faith, and paying too much attention to what the outcome is that the people who paid for the study wanted'.
My grandfather ate butter, fat, spread the bacon grease on his toast every day, preferred the fatty parts of the meats, ate few vegetables, etc. He lived to 88 in good health, never once went to a doctor. My dad is 78, ate the same way until his late 60's with good health, also never went to the doctors office once, then got the 'healthy eating' bug and dropped meat and fat for pasta and whole grain products. Gained 12 pounds, developed high blood pressure and diabetes, and felt like crap. Went back to what we ate 100 years ago and he lost the 12, the diabetes and BP problems disappeared.
And yes, this is MY genetics, not someone elses. But from a dietary standpoint, we're not that far apart. The simple fact is that obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure skyrocketed since the 1970's when the USDA launched the food pyramid. A hundred years ago cancer and heart disease were extremely rare and barely made the top 10 killers worldwide. Today they're #1 and #2, which is hilarious because EVERYONE smoked a hundred years ago, and few do today. You have to wonder a bit why that is.

I went today and ordered the BOGO, asked if I could have both wrapped to go so I could eat salad and breadsticks in the restaurant. They said no problem.
Just thought I'd pass that on since a few people seemed to bring it up.

Meat and fat have in fact been shown to prevent the body from storing fat, while simple carbs are quickly added to the fat pile. The "its just a calorie" argument appears to have no actual basis in science.
The fact that I have stable blood sugar prevents the need to snack so often to pump the sugar level back up.
Lastly, its a diet I can stay on permanently and enjoy. I think most diet failures happen because people try to cut out the sugars and carbs and the fat at the same time. The diet is unsatisfying and short term. Since science has never demonstrated a plausible link between fat and poor health, there is no need to eliminate fat or worry about fat or cholesterol in our diets, at least at a moderate level.

Only 2 things i'll order at Olive...mixed grill and stuffed chicken marsala... i've tried other things, but i'd rather eat somewhere else... The food is good, but i only eat there with gift cards...better places to eat for less money, but if its free...can't complain. Always good service there..except the employees are scary sometimes..like there was a lady older then my mom (read: old)...that took us to our table..nothing wrong with that, but she was scary (like haunted house scary).... oh well...at least she's working and not doing tricks on the street corner... the managers seem really nice (they walk around an talk to people, make sure the overpriced food tastes good)...
