For portraits get a prime lens, for landscape get a wide angle lens (10-35mm) and for sports/ wildlife get a telephoto lens.
Good starting prime is 35mm or 50mm 1.8g around $200. (Set the kit lens to 35mm and take a bunch of pics, then set it to 50mm and do the same. decide which focal lengh works for you better). It will give you ability to take low light (indoor) pictures and good bokeh for portraits. I got 35mm 1.8g for $180 ($20 off Rakuten) and loving it!
For starter telephoto, get a 55-200mm VR for around $100-130 refurbished or $250 new.(or 55-300VR).
For macro you may get a dedicated macro lens (or other cheap alternatives).
Also, an external flash might become handy of you work indoors.
P.S: Check this channel in youtube. There are few good starter videos for D3100.

|Follywood||I think a shutter count of over 10,000 should be classified as used not refurbished.|
