This has to be by far the worst hosting/VPS company ever. Received an e-mail earlier this week that the server my VPS was on had crashed.
Everything is gone. At one point I know I had set it to use their central backup feature, but I don't even see that as an option anywhere since they changed management consoles.
Stupid me for thinking I could actually use it to run a client helpdesk tool on their "Enterprise Package". All the help tickets and service requests for my clients are gone.

Adam Ng did it in less than half hour on a holiday! I am just messing with this Linux box, so now major work on this service but it is cheap. 1and1 is killing me with their increased premiums. All my domains hosted there!
Do you think it is OK to scrape data? Confirming to robots.txt. I just want to develop a small iOS app with info just for me. Instead of open stocks and dollar rate and latest movies up, I want them all on one screen! Tiny project.

FYI.. for anyone who signed up for the 2GB deal last time for $40 with 50gb storage and 2tb bandwidth and just want to bump yourself up to 100gb/3tb bandwith (the current deal at the same price). just open up a ticket.
i just got my upgrade in less then 5 min.
As long as you understand the reliability aspect of urlhasbeenblocked and don't use it for anything critical I think you're good to go. Keep frequent backups yourself and all is well. I kinda just use my VPS as a testing ground for stuff. I'm never heart broken if it gets wiped.

Their handling of the crisis could have been MUCH better. They seriously need to come up with a disaster plan ahead of time, with a schedule to follow and improved customer communication. If they let people know what was going on, with a realistic timetable and continuous updates, they wouldn't have been swamped with quite as many support tickets asking for basic information. Maybe you get what you pay for, but a disaster plan would make their life easier too. They're also not forcing a password reset when they restore backups and get people back online, which is plain crazy since lots of people had their root passwords compromised in plain text in the DB leak. Change your root pw asap if you haven't already.
As for us, the customers, the moral of the story is to keep local backups and to backup the backups. We've all lost data before, whether in an email account, a failed hard drive, or a crippled host. It sucks, so I can sympathize with everyone who lost data. Regardless of which host you use, it's a good idea to have your own recovery plan to minimize downtime.

|dealboy12||They were able to restore my VPS and the data. I didn't have much on there, but am surprised they took the time to do it. So that's a thumbs up for them helping after the crisis hit, but its a shame people had to lose data when it could have been avoided.|

The thing that pisses me off most about this is, I can't just reinstall the OS anytime I want anymore until they get a new control panel with this functionality, and they let someone get a hold of my email address.
I next to never reuse any passwords of websites, so that didn't affect me that they put out my password like that, but it still is unsettling, as almost everyone else I know reuses the same password for everything. Stupid is as stupid does. I wonder how many entries in that database have the unencrypted password for the actual email account that is in there too? If a hacker had that, they can now take over your digital life, even changing passwords at other sites that don't match (forgot your password? Click here and we'll send you a new one to your email address!). Changing your CVPS password ain't going to help with that one; if that password is the same as elsewhere, you need to change it elsewhere, too. Pretty much every web site logs you in with your email address and password. Reusing passwords is stupid, period.
Example: Imagine someone getting into your email,and having your password changed at someplace like your Amazon or Sears account, ordering something expensive, and having it delivered as a gift to someplace where the owner of the house is at work all day. They delete the emails as soon as the transaction is complete, and wait for UPS to show up with the package to steal off the doorstep.
I think some people here are too worried about off-site backups, when they should be worried about changing reused passwords instead.

Do urlhasbeenblocked have some problems with their new control panel? I can not find the option to boot the virtual server, it said:

Not sure if it have anything to do with that I accidentally send the shutdown command through terminal.

|CMJ||Well, they restored my data but somehow they put centos on there instead of the ubuntu I had and well, it broke some things. Trying to get them to fix that.|
