|rayhigh||Great lens, came two days after ordering. IS is very good, was doing shutter dragging at night at a local carnival shooting at 0.6 seconds. Love this lens, on my crop body this will be my walk-around lens.|

Even Amazon or many eBay sellers do it this way now, you have to add it to the cart to see the discounted price.

sellers can sell for any price, they just can't advertise it openly.

Canon is very strict on pricing with the dealers, and this price was very likely below "authorized". Any clue?

I just bought this lens instantly after I saw the review from ephotozine
This lens is so sharp that it's hitting resolution limits of Canon 5D Mk II between f/2.8 and f/8. There's no other Canon lens (including $2000 L lenses), that has been so sharp accross F/2.8-f/8!!!. Unbelievable! I hope it holds its promise once I get it.

"The proximity of the rear element to the image sensor greatly enhances the possibilities for wide angle and very wide angle lenses, enabling them to be made smaller, lighter (containing less glass), faster (larger aperture) and less expensive."
Less expensive is the key for Canon, which is odd because the 17-55 f/2.8 IS and 10-22 lenses are a bit pricey. I knew I would eventually go full-frame which is why I bought the EF 24-70 f/2.8L very early on with my 30D.
