For a genre as competitive as the fighting game genre, this is needed and desired. Character strategies evolve. People discover exploits. Move sets need tweaking. Hell, look at MvC3 and the way people were playing someone like Phoenix vs the way people have been playing her recently. Her nerfs meant that people had to change their play style. And those nerfs were requested by a lot of people because it was necessary.
This genre started off in the arcades, where they would need to release an updated game every year for their game to stay current and played by the arcade patrons. Arcades may not be prevalent in the West anymore, but the enthusiasts have come to expect updates.
It has been going on a long time and will continue to go on for a long time more.

Also, not that it inherently justifies anything, but what's going on now isn't even close to what they did with SF2.

|slickminnesota||Dead or Alive 5 was really fun. An underrated fighter... there have been many great fighters this generation Soul Calibur 4, Dead or Alive 5, Mortal Kombat, Tekken 6, Capcom vs Tatsuoko/ MvC3 ... All top notch, best of the best games in my opinion.|

|bandoogiemanz||You, know I understand both sides of this argument. For me though, a lingering question I have is, what if this practice becomes the norm? I mean, if a game maker knows they can address balance issues and such in an updated version of a game which they can charge for, why should they make it a priority the first time around? The full effort doesn't have to go into every aspect of the game because they can release a subsequent updated version with the necessary tweaks and charge for it. Is every high profie fighting game from now on going to have an updated version that addresses balance issues? I have to side with kg. This phenomenon is the main reason that even at $35, I will not buy Injustice as I'd rather wait for the updated/goty edition where all the extra content that I would have to currently pay extra for, is included in the game.|

Maybe to the casual gamer the new versions look the same, except for obvious new stages. But balance patches across the board in every single release requires a ton of testing and collaboration.
And I think charging money for that kind of stuff was the right thing to do. Besides the fact that patches on XBL/PSN cost like $40k, at this point Capcom has relatively good balance in its games (SF4 and UMVC3 primarily). And if you talk to any of those players, especially the competitive ones, you'll see that most are more than happy to pay for more content/DLC/new SSF4 AE Turbo Hyper Edition even if it only includes a few new characters and another balance patch again.
tl,dr if you don't care about game balance, then all of the revisions probably look the same to you.

As for the other post up there by Biggiep I did not agree with Eyeliner that they must release new editions to keep updating games, especially when the changes in the new versions are not major but cost the same as a new game. I just wanted to call a spade a spade and say Capcom ripped people off and Tecmo/team Ninja is trying to do the same. Eyeliner obviously feels differently and that each version is/was worth it. There is no problem here except with you trying to oversimplify with the "well just don't buy it" logic.

Dead or Alive "Vanilla" came out in September. The new Dead or Alive 5 project (which could be anything really, as we know nothing about it and the terms "new" and "project" were used) was just announced and more than likely will not be out before the end of summer. That is actually a great deal; a possible expansion a year later will do good to breathe some life back into the title for the fighting game community.
