We bought a refurb Vitamix in April of this year and it's been a great unit. It gets used at least twice per day for making smoothies and it excels at that task. I made tomato soup in it last week and it came out great. It can with a crazy thick recipe book too.
I've never used a Blendtec, so I can't compare the two. However, I can say the wifey and I love the Vitamix. I'll do think I'd take the dial and switches over touch controls on a blender though. It seems like a more durable system.

Jamba Juice uses both depending on location.

|JDRN||My first blend was awesome! Had some solids like ice, carrots, spinach, nuts they were blended perfectly, smoother than i'd expected.|

frozen fruit from the frozen section
orange or any type of juice that they sell
the big gallon jug yogurt
vanilla ice cream to make it more creamier(optional, but my kids like it better with this.)
blend all together with some honey to taste. Add a little juice to begin with and add more until it comes to the consistency that you like.
if you already buy a lot of fruit, when they become too ripe, don't throw it out, freeze it and use it for the smoothies.

Starbucks and Jamba Juice use blendtecs...
I've never used a Vitamix so I can't say how they are in comparison but after researching both of them it seems you can't go wrong with either one. That said I own this blender and I love it.

(1) Stability - shakes less on counter
(2) Tamper - everyone loves this
(3) Capacity - you can actually fill the vitamix to the full 64 /48 oz where Blendtec will spill if filled up
