A good potato vodka is Luksusowa. Its from Poland and costs about $11 750ml.
Another good Polish vodka is Sobieski its $11 for 750ml.
A good vodka from the US is 360 Vodka. Its about $18 per 750ml. It also has a good "Earth Friendly" program so you can feel even better when feelin' good.
Personally, I don't really like any Russian vodkas as they have a bitter finish to them no matter the cost level.

|al3b3d3v||i can put away half a bottle over the course of the night but if its bad vodka you have a headache the next day. Any XO congac is still better than any fancy vodka out there.|

|codvicious||Reyka vodka. If I'm drinking strait vodka it's got to be Reyka now that I've tried it. If I'm mixing it, then whatever's cheapest. I'll drink white russians with bartons.|

I wouldn't touch Chopin or belvedere with a 10 foot pole.
Russian standard platinum is my choice of poison.

|fourml8r||as others have mentioned. my criteria for vodka is not taste (Since i am usually using it in mixed drinks anyway), but if it gives me a hangover the next morning. best i have found so far is ketel one. i did just buy a bottle of titos which came highly recommended but i have not tried it yet.|

|ninjaturtle||Any Russian vodka's taste harsh to me and leave me with a hangover every time. Kirkland vodka (France) was good when opened, a week later it taste like rubbing alcohol. Grey Goose is over-rated and too expensive for the taste. It is about equal to Skyy in my opinion, but a little sweater. I have not tried Chopin, but seeing that I LOVE Belvedere and it is a Polish vodka like Chopin I could imagine it is smooth. Polish vodka is the way to go.|

(Yes in essence all alcohol is vodka/grain alcohol until aged in it's respective flavor giving medium. I'm familiar with the distilling processes....thank you History Channel.)

Today most vodka is distilled from cereal grains. It is highly neutral, most flavouring substances having been eliminated during distillation and filtration, the latter process employing charcoal purifiers. Distilled water is usually added before bottling in order to lower alcohol content to 40–43% by volume (80–86 proof). Vodka is not aged. If you're looking for good bases, just find what you like the most. Start with the moderates (titos, stoli & smirinoff are standard) and then try up when you get a chance. I'm a big fan of the Kirkland French Vodka (the big tall bottle w/ the red plug on the bottom). It's like $27 a handle. On the other hand, I was not a big fan of the $13 American style kirkland vodka that comes in the frosted bottle. Fine for mixing, not great for vodka martinis or vodka-sodas in my opinion.

For me, a straight up (good) potato vodka (ie. Chopin) is the best! Adding anything with alternate flavors as a mixer, don't waste your money, go with Smirnoff or something reasonably priced. Luksusowa is a sleeper, and relatively inexpensive potato vodka!

It is defined by government regulations as a spirit without any distinctive character, aroma, taste or color. Vodka is essentially an un-aged neutral spirit that can be distilled from just about anything fermentable. Although the legendary potato is used in the production of some vodkas, most brands' today, including the imported ones, are made from grain...any grain, including rye, wheat and barley, but principally corn.
