The only way they will be notified specifically that you have mentioned their name in a post within a thread is to quote them.
If you don't want to have the text that they wrote to be quoted, you can remove it and just leave a "dot" in the quotes
(like I did above ^ for your quote).

|rojocru||If I don't want to quote users, but want them to know that I mentioned them in my post (assuming this is possible), how do I do so? Is there a special way that their usernames must be mentioned / typed?|

If you are trying to stop emails there are some things to know:
1) Newsletters can be unsubscribed to by clicking the link at the bottom of the email. You can use this link to unsubscribe as well http://slickdeals.net/newsletter/unsubscribe.php
2) Deal Alerts are things that you signed up for. Possibly when you entered site-wide contests that offered extra entries when you left the box checked allowing deal alerts for threads about that day's merchant. eg: Dell sponsored giveaways = DAs for Dell deal threads.
3) To cancel Deal Alerts you need to log in to your account and go to your Deal Alerts page http://slickdeals.net/forums/dealalerts.php then check the ones you no longer want and cancel them.
