|Zoe Moon||Hotels in Vancouver are very expensive, look at B&B's in the area. Best place to stay is downtown, since most of what you'll want to do and see is in that area. Restaurants in downtown are hit and miss as far as how good the food is and they can be very pricey. There's some great and inexpensive food in Chinatown. Be sure to go to Stanly Park, lots to do and see there. On the east side of the park, you get a good view of the seaplanes taking off and landing.|

consider looking into a RV.
ive used them before. it was a fair price.
maybe you want to take the van to seattle/us border, and then take a bus in. or dont mention it to the rental company. most CA rentals will want you to stay in AZ, NV, or CA. you will have to get a waiver/written request to be allowed to go to another area.

You can totally rent from a private party and get insurance on the side for it. It's not illegal whatsoever.
That said check out van rental places. You may be able to get a Sprinter or something but honestly $2,200 doesn't seem like a horrible price as they usually don't compete as much on the larger vans.
If you are looking to cross the border with it though make sure that is allowed.

Road Trip for 8
I'm planning a road trip with my family this summer, and I haven't been able to find an 8-passenger or larger automobile to rent.
It looks like two car rentals will be the cheapest way to go, but I'd be willing to pay $1500ish for a larger van rental that could accommodate all of us and make the driving better since we'd all be together.
We'll be flying to (thank you Southwest CC) Sacrimento and then going to Vancouver and back (edit: 10 day trip). All the 8 passenger vans I've seen are $2200 or more.
Any tips or ideas? I've thought about trying to rent from someone selling a van on craigslist and getting good temporary insurance for the month, but I don't know how legal or possible that would be.
