www.mousesavers.com
www.wdwinfo.com (this site also has informational message boards)

these 2 sites are an absolute MUST if you are planning a trip to Disney World or Disneyland. You can find info on saving tons of money on your trip, including discounts on Disney onsite Resorts as well as Disney Theme Park passes.

Smarter Travel http://www.smartertravel.com/
Virtual Tourist http://www.virtualtourist.com/

Since Las Vegas seems to be one of the 'in' destinations lately, here are a few
Las Vegas specific travel info and discount sites:

And since Walt Disney World and Orlando are also some of the most desired/requested vacation places on here these days, here are a couple more travel and discount sites specifically for
Walt Disney World and Orlando/Florida:

And for car rentals, these sites usually have a fairly decent listing of current discounts and/or coupons: RentalCars.com [rentalcars.com] and http://www.rentalcarmomma.com/. And the mousesavers site that Brisar mentioned, above, usually has current rental car discount coupons and codes, which are not necessarily just for WDW.

Also, don’t forget that most cities' visitor’s/tourist centers have local travel guides and/or coupons that can be seen online or at least ordered, usually for free. Just do a search for your city/state and include ‘visitor bureau’, ‘tourist’ or ‘travel’.

The federal government has an unofficial but related group which collects travel deals for its employees, civilian and military. I don't know if any authority will request a government badge id when you buy, board, etc., but registration requires a .gov or .mil email address. For such people:

http://www.govarm.com/ - other federal agencies
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/sh...p?t=312559 - amazing list of MR resources longer than this thread even

Right now, cruising is REALLY, REALLY cheap. Airfare to get there may not be, but to spend $550 for a 7 day cruise is incredibly cheap on some really nice ships.

I've been doing tons of research on cruises and cruising, and here's some of the cruising websites I've found for finding good cruise deals.

VacationsToGo.com [vacationstogo.com]: This site not only has a bunch of great deals, but this site has a TON of information about every ship out there and is the one-stop source I ALWAYS go back to in getting all the info I need about every ship, every line, and about each individual cruise. When shopping for a cruise, ALWAYS KEEP THIS BOOKMARKED OR KEEP THIS ONE IN A SEPARATE TAB SO YOU CAN REFER BACK TO IT. Trust me.

Travelzoo [travelzoo.com]
Cruisedeals.com [cruisedeals.com]
7BlueSeas.com [7blueseas.com]

Cruising, especially to the caribbean since it's out of Florida and New Orleans, which were hit so hard by the hurricanes, are so cheap right now because they want to bring business back. Cruises are 50-75% off what they normally are. I mean, a 7 day cruise for $429 a person is not bad, and I've seen a few for that price. Check it out.

rkster09 07-11-2006 08:37 AM

Hi,

i am lookin for tickets from Washington DC to Calgary,Canada.
The best I can find is 650$ in US sites listed on this thread. But does anyone know any best canada sites that would be cheaper or any other suggestions?

Lowest fares search site

Here's a site that I think is better than farecast:

www.sidestep.com

I've used it for years and I really like the way they display the results format. And its very user friendly...

take care

EyeBaller 08-25-2006 04:07 PM

Agreed. It's a good site. But check the Travel Deals sticky in the Help Me Find a Deal forum, it's already there.

my $12 per night hostel in barcelona had free bed bugs!

there are many nice hostels, it's better to buy when you arrive and can 'see' the place. one exception would be the first night if you arrive late.

nancito 09-10-2006 06:57 AM

get some diatomaceous earth for the bed bugs, you should be in good shape after that.

Expedia $100 off coupon w/ 3 night hotel stay

I hope this is the right place to put it.

http://www.expedia.com/daily/prom...id=111853&

The following is from the Expedia.com website. I don't think I can use it because the fine print also says that travel must be by Dec 31, 2006.

Thinking of taking a trip? It's the perfect time to start planning, because when you book a flight + hotel package today, you'll save $100—instantly! Simply book your package of (3) three nights or more by October 8, and use the coupon code SAVE100. It's that easy. You can even use your coupon along with our fantastic 10th Anniversary Sale deals. Talk about a win-win situation!

european discount airlines:

www.ryanair.com
www.easyjet.com
www.air-berlin.com (germany)
www.volareweb.com (italy)
www.virgin-express.com

there is also a wiki-article about other airlines, but those are the major players for cheap cheap travel. http://wikitravel.org/en/Discount...t_airlines

just note that they often don't fly out of major airports, so getting from london heathrow to london stansted may be a great hassel unless you are very cheap and exceptionally patient.

sportguy29 09-29-2006 11:57 AM

try this

Go to http://www.grab2travel.com
Go to "Flight" section

Also try "SmartSearch"... you can compare prices on all major travel sites by entering trip detail once... once you enter ur dates etc.. you are good to go to compare.. I liked that place.. you can do similar search for Flights, Cars, Hotels, Cruises, Vacation Packages etc...

Garrison 10-20-2006 01:55 AM

One I don't think has been mentioned yet is Travelsupermarket. http://www.travelsupermarket.com/...?package=4 Usually find some good deals on there

nguyenvandon 10-21-2006 06:53 PM

Help me find a deal:

Flight to Las Vegas

profidamus 10-24-2006 08:41 PM

Really cheap flights by bucket shop

Just looked todays list and the east coast fairs. HKG to IAD, FLORIDA, NY ETC $560

Sydney Australia now in shoulder season $360

Sweden $600

Shanghai $260

Mumbia India $380

Delhi India $350

Moscow $410

When searching and you see a deal why not post here as many people go to HK and can do some cheap mileage runs from here.

All these were found on www.travelsexpert.com and there are many more this is just a sample. The best thing about this site is you can ask for your exact dates, they'll confirm and all you have to do is give an email address, no crediti card info etc. but if you want to book then they ask you for your details. Nice change from providing info first and then they tell you.

Enjoy
Robert

PS on this site you get all your miles too, not like other bucket shops.

I'm going to need a flight to Poland, but prices are much higher than last year at this time.
Last year I got out in Feb for $666 otd. Now, the cheapest is 877 and they want 10% of that for my infant daughter. So 87+ $400 taxes/fees/surcharges, and I'm getting robbed.
Anyone know of airlines that don't scalp you if you have an infant? on your lap.

An Idea w I had was to get a flight that connects Through germany and just take a train the rest of the way....
Like, a flight to moscow, that connects through frankfurt perhaps? Anyone ever tried this?

I just tried it for hotel only and it didn't work. Thanks though!

Does anyone happen to know of any coupon codes for any of these sites? I have been trying to booka flight to atlanta from detroit and it says one price, then once they add the taxes+fees, it is $70 more than what it said it was. It is rediculous. $70 in fees for doing what? I would really like to know. I have checked every site on here, some of them look like awesome deals, until they add their fees. Wish me luck, I need it.
The expedia coupon code is no good, but thanks anyways. I have found 2 coupon codes here for expedia but they all are not valid I guess. Just a heads up for someone who is looking to use it.

GearMaven 01-25-2007 06:48 PM

Regarding fees, following is information from the MIT Ticket Tax Project [mit.edu] regarding fees you will pay no matter what site you use to book. These fees alone have gone up so much in the last few years! Then add on the booking sites' fees and whew!
Quote:

Base fare = BF = Airline fare without any taxes applied

Federal ticket tax = FTT = U.S. value added tax (currently 7.5% of base fare), used to fund FAA operations and the Airport Improvement Program

Federal segment tax = FST = U.S. tax applied per segment (currently $3.30), used to fund FAA operations and the Airport Improvement Program

Passenger facility charge = PFC = U.S. "head tax" collected and used by specific airports (currently $0, $3, or $4.50), used for airport improvement projects

Federal security service fee = FSSF = U.S. security tax (currently $2.50), used for passenger and baggage screening

Total taxes and fees = TTF =
U.S.: The sum of FTT, FST, PFC, and FSSF
EU: The sum of all applicable national ticket taxes

Total fare = BF+TTF = The sum of the base fare and the total taxes and fees; this is what the passenger actually pays, except that most travel agents also charge a service fee

Effective tax rate = ETR = Total taxes and fees expressed as a percentage of base fare (= TTF / BF x 100%)

Notes:
* Special tax rules exist for Alaska, Hawaii, and rural airports in the U.S.
* Additional taxes apply for international travel to and from the U.S.
* PFC and FSSF are collected each time a passenger boards, except that no more than two collections are made for each direction of travel. There is no limit on the collection of the FST.

This is an AWESOME thread!

We are in the very beginning planning stages for a family trip to Europe next year. Do you all know of an all-inclusive website that might help with my planning? For e.g., best time of year to visit, sights to see, airfare and hotel? Flying from one place in Europe to another for minimal cost? I have heard that there are shuttles like that but I can't even imagine where to begin. Maybe I should even go to an old-fashioned travel agent!!

I am already feeling overwhelmed and I've only just begun looking into all this! Has anyone else planned a trip like this?

Thanks for your help!!!

GearMaven 02-11-2007 02:01 PM

I personally wouldn't trust one all-inclusive website for the best, most thorough information. From personal experience (Europe 3 months summer 2001, near yearly trips Ireland/UK since a child and other world locations), most of the fun in planning your adventure is the research on various boards and forums, reading the travel guides and, during the planning phase, getting a true feel for the kind of travelers you and your family want to be (guided in a group, traveling alone, some of both). :yummy:

Whether you use a travel agent or not depends on how proactive you are in doing your own research and how comfortable you are in making reservations (transportation, lodging, advance site bookings, etc.) online, by phone or by mail. Just because you are feeling overwhelmed at this beginning  , doesn't mean you won't be able to handle most of it yourself if you like. Although after doing your research, that's a good time to enlist the help of a travel agent if you prefer. They can give a newbie good advice on what your budget will allow. (I handled all the planning alone for my three-month trip in Europe except for the 21 days I traveled with Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door [ricksteves.com] in Italy. The rest of the trip I was a single woman traveling alone via train, bus and rental cars! Very doable and tons of fun!)

First things first...visit your local bookstore and really study the top travel guides for Europe: Frommers, Fodors, Lonely Planet, Rick Steves, etc. Note the writing style of the books, the budgets they are catering to, and see which ones you prefer. They are very different! I personally like Frommer's and Rick Steves, but don't find Lonely Planet my style, while many others absolutely love it. I love the Rick Steves' guides because there are inexpensive choices provided as well as the more expensive, hotels are actually located close to sites, and the tips alone for beating museum and attraction lines  are worth the cost of the books.

Then either buy several guides at the bookstore or online (remember SD's Borders discount coupons, Amazon deals or Rick Steves' [ricksteves.com] special offers!) or try to find Europe travel books at your library, through your local Freecycle [freecycle.org] group or CraigsList [craigslist.org]. Of course, pop into any travel agency you pass and scoop up the free literature on things which interest you. It's all educational! Also, remember, around this time of year AAA [aaany.com] starts putting on their free travel shows or check the travel section of your newspaper for travel slideshows or talks happening locally.

Then get everyone in the family reading these guides (put a copy in the bathroom  ! Bring one on errands to the post office or grocery store for line downtime!) and make notes on places/ideas that really call to you. The point is to give you information so you all can narrow down your choices of which countries to visit, how long to stay, what to see and do, etc. (Rick Steves' guidebooks put sample suggested itineraries at the front so that you can see what best to highlight in a limited amount of time.)

That said there are some terrific websites and guides for educating yourself:

Fodors Travel Forums [fodors.com] (choose "Europe" on the left-hand side)
A wealth of personal travelogues, advice and queries about every possibility you can imagine. I received fabulous personal recommendations for lodging and car deals for Kauai, Hawaii, and for my travels in Europe through those forums.

Thorntree Lonely Planet [lonelyplanet.com]
The Thorntree is perhaps the most easily accessible and comprehensive of all the travel websites. Travellers to anywhere can ask the advice of those on the ground, previous visitors or locals, and are sure to receive an answer from one of the most vibrant travellers communities on the net. The main section of the website also provides excellent maps, guides and booking services.

Rick Steves' Graffiti Wall [ricksteves.com]
Lively community of travelers who generously share their experience and enthusiastically learn from each other. Many helpful tips for traveling "close to the ground" and natives in Europe.

MyTripJournal [MyTripJournal.com]
Read journals of travelers who've experienced it all before you.

Travelocity [travelocity.com]
This has been my airfare travel booking site for some time now, although I check out many before any decision.

Travelzoo [travelzoo.com]
One of the best at offering cheap fares. Examples include $88 round-trip tickets to the Caribbean--though be warned that very often they're only available on undesirable travel days, like Monday, and the deals can sell out quickly. Airfare, car rental, lodging and cruise specials are displayed right up front on the home page. There’s limited search capability (by destination only), so be prepared to be spontaneous!

FlyerTalk [flyertalk.com]
This site allows users to exchange information on how to get the most out of their frequent flier miles, credit card points and hotel points. You maximize your frequent flyer miles on the trip and, hopefully, come home with another free trip in miles for next year.

What's On When [whatsonwhen.com]
Exhaustive global events guide that covers just about all conceivable forms of entertainment, from opera in Italy and major European rock festivals to the tiny and obscure. Very important if you want to hit or avoid festivals and events in certain cities.

Well, I hope not to get blasted for running on  , but this is an exciting topic for me. Should you need more advice, feel free to PM me.

Freeman 02-13-2007 03:44 PM

I will second Lonely Planet, I really like that site and its a great source of info - the people on it really seem to know what they're talking about. Kayak is also one I like to check, but also after i find a deal a lot of times i'll go straight to the airline's website to see if i can find something better. Also, lufthansa is having a sale on a lot of their US to Europe flights through tomorrow that are really good like chicago to munich for just like $200 - also worth checking out.

Puzzled about what kind of deals exactly you are looking for and for what (airfare, cars, hotels, etc.) as I always see deals on flights, etc., for Vancouver, Victoria, and other cities in Canada on most of my regular favorite sites.

Where have you tried and what are you looking for?

Oh, wait, just realized that you might be speaking of general SlickDeals for Canada...not travel deals in particular? If so, assume that would belong in another thread, as in "Find Me A Deal." I find movie screening deals for my brother in Montreal all the time on the Movie Screenings Thread. [In fact, there's a free screening post for Vancouver showing right now on the last page. Just subscribe to that thread for daily emails and you'll keep up with all the screenings.]

Have you just searched by "Canada" or "Vancouver" or "Victoria"?

Thanks for the help yes thats what I meant but also hotels and activities and stuff Ill keep searching I guess. Thanks again

My first post here-and I have a question on the student universe travel site.

I found a flight I'd like but cannot find the requirements needed to qualify as a student.

I do work for a state university as staff. Does that count and and have a .edu in my email.

Thanks so much. My eyes bugged out when I checked the flight info and saw the price. It's about $40 cheaper PLUS I can choose the flight times instead of going hotwire and having it be a surprise!

Thanks to anyone that can help tell me if I would qualify as a student and what I would need to show for ID and who asks etc.

I think I know what you're looking for - http://www.redflagdeals.com/ Is a canadian focused site that has a pretty good forum so try that out. The only thing I can think of is if you travel a lot maybe you should try looking for a credit card with a good rewards program for miles/hotels/etc? If you travel like me I'm sure you have frequent flier set up with all the airlines and they alert you whenever deals come up? But you don't have to be a member to qualify for a lot of good deals on stuff, it just really helps to keep you in the know. The best winter deals I've seen when it comes to fights have been lufthansa's flights from the US to Europe right now and you don't have to be a Miles and More member to get those so keep that in mind too.

I would step carefully with student universe. I have heard some horror stories about them.

I am looking for a cruise from Galveston, TX somwhere between March 2nd to March 5,. 2 days, 3 days, 5 days should be okay.

rajee 02-21-2007 07:33 PM

A quick question on Priceline/Hotwire name your own price deals ... It's just me and a buddy going out to Cali in May ... I got a pretty good price to work (11 bucks a day + tax for 'economy') ... The question I have is, how do I know what 'features' the car has? I only really care about A/C and automatic trans lol ... Most lower range rental cars don't have power anything or even CD for that matter ... but it doesn't SAY it specifically on the page ... Can someone help me out??

mrose1120 02-21-2007 08:59 PM

hey all,
I just searched on farecompare and one minute the price on a flight was $249 through AA and 2 minutes later on a new search it was like $30 higher...is this normal? Anyway, looking for the best deal on a flight aptil 12th (evening departure) until the 16th (morningdeparture_

Whats the hot new site? lol thanks in advance

amseco 02-23-2007 04:52 AM

:sadwalk:
I was gonna wait for a 10% off American Airlines coupon to save me $75. Then, the fare raised from $471 to $574.
Now, i dont have a coupon and the fare is totally expensive. :weeping:

GearMaven 02-24-2007 11:40 AM

The regrettable thing about travel deals is that they are totally flexible from moment to moment!! That fare that went up could also go down later on, too. Don'tcha just love the travel industry!

It simply pays to be forearmed with all the coupons, mileage-earning credit cards, rewards programs, etc., before you go looking for the best fare. Then it is almost a crap shoot. You just have to take your chances and be content with the deal you get.

For me, I'm the worst follower of my own advice, since I usually find a little bit better deal somewhere after I've booked what I thought was a fabulous deal. With all the travel newsletters and bulletins I get or check out, that's bound to happen. So c'est la vie!

mmagique 02-26-2007 08:58 AM

You're not necessarily stuck.
With some airlines you can actually put a 'hold' on a flight for up to two weeks, with no obligation.
Many airlines will refund the difference between the price you paid, and the lower price if the flight you're taking becomes less expensive later on. (You have to ask for it though)
If you find an incredibly better deal at a different airline, most airlines will not refund your money, but will give you credit for future flights.
Go to www.farecast.com to learn of new deals at your airline(s).
Another thing to remember is it's best to check prices several times a day.
I generally check with travelzoo or sidestep...find the best prices offered, and then go to the actual airline offering the sale and buy direct (if it's cheaper)
I got an incredible price (imho) on Saturday.
Saturdays and Wednesdays seem to be the most likely days for deals, but....you never know!

Freeman 02-26-2007 01:58 PM

farecast is really good, but be sure to just keep checking the airline's websites themselves too. the deals on lufthansa's website change on almost a weekly basis so i'm not sure farecast will catch them. also, check to see what airlines are partners of the flight you want because sometimes you can transfer miles between partners and people forget to count that sometimes.

Skinnerback 02-27-2007 06:33 AM

flight pricing is nuts. I was notified when I came into work this morning I will be going to Atlanta March 5th-8th. Not a big deal because work pays for the air fare, but I always like to shop around and get the better prices. Prices I'm seeing range from $500-$1233 for a round trip ticket from Louisville to Atlanta. Be cheaper for them to let me rent a car and drive it, its only about 6 and a half hours -- then we'd save on shipping my equipment too (i cant take my large equipment box on a flight due to size and weight, so we have to UPS it to my travel locations.)

After finding my exact travel dates, I played around with my options. I had $1,028 nonstop with Delta, $672 Nonstop with NWA, and $632 nonstop with Continental. -- so I changed my airport. Instead of using Louisville I used Indianaoplis, and I was able to find tickets for $298. Funny how a different departure airport is so much cheaper. I was toying with the idea of buying a $343 ticket to Orlando that had a connection in Atlanta, both ways, and just not continuing onto Orlando, but since I found a cheaper flight I will be going with that as long as my boss is okay with my flying out of Indy instead.

Freeman 02-28-2007 01:17 PM

tell me about it. i've been looking at going to ireland and flying through london for a short stop from washington dc and price just dropped today for a limited time fare sale unannounced to $215. I'm doing mine myself and not for work so i guess i have more flexibility, but you should look into a travel agent or something for your company - sounds like it takes up a quite a bit of your time looking up travel info

mmagique 02-28-2007 08:59 PM

I posted this in hot deals but, since there may be some who actually check the 'travel' thread (crazy, I know!!!   )
I thought I'd share it here as well.

I spent many hours checking and re-checking hotel rates and reviews, and found what I think is a great deal.
This site has other (decent) hotels for less, but....I wanted something really nice (without having that sinking feeling I get when all of my money is being sucked out of my purse!)

So anyway, I found a gorgeous place about a mile and a half from Disney, with a bedroom, living room, and kitchenette area (which has a stove, microwave, toaster, coffee-maker, and dining area.)

There are a lot of other amenities, too, and I'm paying $76. pr night!

The website I found this on, (www.hotelkingdom.com) has many many other deals in lots and lots of locations, but, I like this one because of all the positive reviews it generated.

Here is their description of the place;

I have checked this site, but I am a newbie so go easy on me. Can anyone help me find a better deal on a flight from akron canton to las vegas (342)? I plan on leaving April 10 and coming home April 12th. Just want to experience Vegas for the first time. As I have stated, I have searched many of the sites listed, but I am positive someone can find me a better deal. Many of you have been there before and know all the tricks of the trade. Thank you so much.

Next time do let us know which sites you searched. Quickly going to my fav--Travelocity--I came up with $272 on Frontier Airlines. Several things to know about flying to Las Vegas:
  • Travelling to Las Vegas on Sunday through Wednesday typically results in air and hotel rates that average about 1/3 the price of weekend travel. This may not apply on weeks where major conventions are in town, but if your dates are flexible start with a Sunday or Monday departure to find the best possible deal.
  • Best deals often are an air/hotel combo on most sites, especially shown on the TravelZoo newsletter. Make sure you register for that and keep an eye out for very short leadtime offers.

Make sure to check out Travelocity's Las Vegas Specials [travelocity.com] page for both air and hotel deals. (For example, when I put in your dates, I got an air/hotel Circus Circus deal for $310, an Excalibur deal for $371, and a Treasure Island deal for $397.)

Check out TravelZoo Las Vegas Vacations [travelzoo.com] for some current great offers and see TravelZoo Las Vegas Hotels [travelzoo.com] for current low-cost hotel offers if you should find a spectacular air deal alone.

Best of luck.

How I booked a vacation for 2 in Orlando for under $1000

There are even less expensive ways to do it, but I paid extra for certain amenities I wished to have. (It’s not a slick deal if you wish you did it differently) Also, keep in mind that I am traveling during the last month of March (Spring Break period,) when prices for everything in Orlando are at a premium. If you use these tactics during the ‘off’ season, (September after Labor Day, October, the week after Thanksgiving, and December-excluding Christmas and New Years), your results will undoubtedly be much better.

Flight; $329. 2 RT tickets from my town (Louisville) straight to Orlando (MCO) I could have saved around $100 flying out of another airport, or flying into Tampa, but the convenience factor made it worth it to me.

How I found this flight deal; I signed up for ‘Ding’ through SW, I checked www.air-fare.com every day, I checked www.travelzoo.com often along with Travelocity and Sidestep. I also signed up to be notified b various airlines when a flight was available that matched my needs. I checked the travel threads on www.slickdeals.net and www.disboards.com every day. When I was actively searching, I checked all of these places several times a day. It was discouraging for a while, because the cheapest flights I could find came out to around $300. per person after fees and taxes.
I made sure to travel on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, because the flights are almost always alot cheaper then. I received an e-mail from Southwest that they had some ‘click and save deals’ I checked, and they were offering flights (one way) to and from Orlando for $69. As soon as I saw that, I jumped on it.

Hotel; $254.49 for 3 nights. This is an area where I could have saved more money, but, I wanted something special. It has a master bedroom, a kitchen with a stove, fridge, toaster, microwave and coffee-maker, a dining table, a ‘roman tub’, and two lovely pools. It is only a mile away from Disney and a mile and a half from Universal, and it has excellent reviews on many travel websites.

How I got this hotel deal; I checked the ‘usual suspects’ listed above, and I also bought some books on Orlando. (I could have saved $$ by going to the library, buying them used, or at least ordering them from Amazon, but I wanted them up-to-date, and I wanted them NOW! *lol*) The books I bought were The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2007 by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa (I recommend it)
Passporters Walt Disney World Resort by Jennifer and Dave Marx, (this one’s a bit different, I’d read the reviews on it to see if it’s for you) and Disney on a Dime by Chris and Kristal Carson. (Not really much info in this one.) I also recommend The Penny Pincher’s Guide to Walt Disney World. I don’t actually have that book anymore, and don’t know who wrote it, but it’s the best book I’ve ever read on how to save $$ when in Orlando on vacation.
After reading in these books and on the Dis boards about a website called www.hotelkingdom.com , I decided to check it out. I went there and found the place I described above (Cypress Point Grand Villas) for $76. per night. (They had two bedrooms from $100. per night, but, I felt that would be wasteful with only me and ds staying).
They are a time-share resort, but I do not have to go to any timeshare presentation. I can if I want to, and get $150, but, it’s not something I want to do. I could have found a room for much less, but, for the price, the good reviews and the convenience and $$ saving by having a fridge and stove, and the location, it was worth it to me.

Rental car $151.09 1 week; Again, this is another place where I could have saved a few bucks by waiting until the last minute, but, it was worth $50 to me to have the peace of mind that it is taken care of.

How I got my car rental deal; I checked the places listed above, plus www.mousesavers.com and www.carrentalmomma.com and certain car rental websites (esp. Dollar, as they seemed to have the best prices on on-site rental cars.)
I had a few criteriae, I wanted to be able to rent at the airport. I have rented off-site before, and, honestly, for the $$ I saved, it just wasn’t worth the hassle. I also wanted to rent from a company that had good reviews by the Disneyers. I relied on the mousesavers site for this information. They said to avoid Payless car rental, if possible, so I did. After checking and re-checking all these sites, and trying many combinations of codes, I finally just went to Priceline and put in a bid of $15. per day. They accepted my bid, and, with taxes and fees, it came to around $150. It goes against my general principles to pay more than $100 per week for a rental car, but, since ds will be with me, and I will be driving straight to Dad’s house in Melbourne when we land, it was worth an extra $50 for the peace of mind. I was aware also, that it is Spring Break so, I’m not terribly unhappy with this deal.
If you just book your rental through a regular agency, you can book and cancel anytime you find a lower rental. You cannot cancel with Priceline, so, be sure of your dates if you decide to go with them.

Universal Studios, 2, 7 day passes to all the parks for $185.28 The average family of 4 spends $400. per day on tickets!!

How I got a deal on tickets; It would have been much more difficult had I NEEDED to go to WDW, but, we really like Universal. It’s so clean and fresh looking, everything is newer, and the rides are spectacular. I looked on the Dis boards, and Mouse savers, and everyone was talking about a 7 day unlimited pass to all of Universal’s parks for around $80. a piece. Since a one day one park pass is around $75, this is an excellent deal! We are not going to be in Orlando the whole 7 days, but, it’s the best deal going. It is an internet only deal. You pay in advance, and then print your tickets at a kiosk set up for that purpose. You can print them at home, but, I prefer the heavier weight of their actual tickets. (You tend to get quite wet at Universal!)

Staying at Dad’s house; FREE!

How I got this deal; Called Dad, said “hey Dad, we’re coming to visit” He said “ok” ymmv. :lmao:

liketotally 03-12-2007 02:52 AM

Ok. So this is my first time traveling on a plane by myself, only traveling on a plane once before in 92 with my mommy and daddy (aww.)

I hope to leave New Jersey on Thursday the 29th during the evening (btwn 6-9p) and land in Dallas, then take an early Monday morning flight out back to Jersey. Being that I'm such a noob at this, I prefer non-stop flights.

My mom for some reason is determined I should fly out of ACY (Atlantic City airport) - but I'm not finding any flights out of there, so Newark (EWR) or Philadelphia (PHL) will suffice, although she's highly against Philly for some reason. Speaking of which - how much does it cost to leave your car at an airport, because Philly seems to be showing the cheapest flights on AA.com, so if I had to, I suppose I'll drive myself.

So basically, if anyone could guide me in the right direction - I'm looking for any coupons, discounts, advice for a first time flyer.. it would be greatly appreciated.

The not that important postscript:
I'm meeting a friend in Texas, we're going to stay the first 2 nights in Dallas - Saturday night in Austin and then Sunday night go back to Dallas and catch the early flight. :)

Thanks in advance for any help!

Help me find a Travel Deal: Honeymoon in Hawaii

I've been bouncing around several of the travel sites listed in the top post, but I am having a really hard time finding even a "decent" deal on airfare (I only need airfare at this stage) for my honeymoon to Hawaii.

Some info:

Departure Date: Planed for Thursday, July 5, 2007 (this is flexbile, can leave the 4th or 6th is necessary)
Return Date: Sunday, July 15, 2007. This is non-negotiable, as I only have the following Monday off and we have a place booked through Sunday already).

I live in NY, so JFK, Laguardia, Islip, and maybe even Newark are acceptable locations for flying out of/returning. I'm planning on flying into Kona airport on the Big Island, but this is potentially negotiable as well.

Obviously the flights won't be non-stop, but any layover more than an hour and a half is excessive. In addition, I haven't been able to find a fare under $725 round trip per person.

Airefare Watchdog has been sending me updates and there is a trip to Kona for around $550 per person, only valid for flights through May 17th.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to look for a better deal? Should I wait a few weeks and look again? Or is the time of year factor playing a large part in the pricing?

Thanks!

~ Mike

Lufthansa is having a fare sale on trips from a lot of US cities to London and Atlanta is included in it right now. Check the dates, but i'm pretty sure its good for the dates you're looking for: http://www.lufthansa.com/online/p...?tl=1&l=en

request 1st time trip to Hawaii- no experience

Dates of travel- May 24-29
Departure city- Phoenix, AZ to Hawaii (not sure where to begin, but we plan to stay mostly in Oahu and we'll visit the volcanoes on the big island in one day.)
# of people (2 adults/3 children) (ages 13,9,&4)
# of nights -5
Approximate budget for my trip-5K
Activities that interest us, relaxing, nightlife with kids, activities for kids, learn to surf for kids, horesback riding, bannana boat things along these lines. We also want to visit Pearl Harbor.
I have looked into craigslist and vrbo, and we'll probably go that route for lodging. It's just so overwhelming. I don't know where to stay, in relation to what we want to do. I am afraid to pick a spot too far from activities.
I have looked at a couple of travel packages, but they are expensive! I'll look into the travel deals forums today. We have a Costco membership. More than anything, I need insight from those that have been there.
We plan to eat in as much as we can, and will buy our supplies from Costco or WalMart.
Any ideas on how to plan this trip?
Thanks!

Thanks!

Hi chavi! Your trip sounds great.

People here can certainly try to direct you to the best deals, but if you need Hawaii vacation info, try TripAdvisor.com and do a search by or go to google.com and "hawaii message board" In other words, check travel sights for suggestions on exactly what to do. for the deals on them, come back here and ask.

Deep discount hotel & tickets

I found this site from an advertisement link on the eBay site. This site offers deep discounted hotel and theme park tickets. How legit is this? Has any one used this?

Looked like a timeshare; sure enuf quick search found this:
Quote:

"Persons taking advantage of the Super Discounted Offers acknowledges that their presence is required at a 90-minute timeshare tour presentation (120 minutes in Las Vegas) in order for the discounted rate to be valid. Persons also agree that they meet the following qualifications: they are between the ages of 25-68 with an annual household income of at least $40,000 ($50,000 for Park City, Utah). If married both husband and wife must attend presentation together. Failure to meet the qualifications and attend the sales presentation will result in a penalty equal to the retail rate of the gift or incentive. Gratuities, transportation or meals are NOT included, unless specified in confirmation letter."
Many of the ones that look too good are timeshares. Some people enjoy taking these, some avoid them like the plague. I tend to be in the latter category...

Please always use the resources already provided in this thread to attempt to find some deals first and THEN bring the research you've done to this thread for advice from savvy SDers on either getting an even better deal or maximizing it.

We then are much more motivated to jump in and help you get something better knowing that you've put in some effort. Don't believe this thread is intended to serve as a travel agent just doing all the legwork for people. It's the extra special prices we can suss out after you've done the basics, or we can point you in a better direction.

As the quote from the post above outlines, there are wonderful sites out there for you to begin with...and SDers always mention new ones that arise.

Don't know anything about that site you mentioned, but for the actual theme park tickets (if not booking a package), don't forget to check out:
  • Discounts offered by AAA (if a member)
  • Discounts offered on the theme parks' websites (often can be terrific for advance purchases).

What deals did you find? A price that doesn't satisfy gives us a starting point. For what price range are you looking?

The best I found was 243 + taxes + fees and that was through United. I dont really want to pay more than 160 when everything is said and done. I took this exact trip several months ago and it costed 180 total, but I booked it months in advance. Sorry I didn't include this info before.

I have gone through the whole thread but could not find much info about theme park tickets/Orlando attractions tickets deal sites. We are planning for 2nd week of May and would appreciate if anyone can update the thread with deal sites or where/what would be the best prices for the theme park tickets. One of the deals that i found for the Universal Studios and Islands of adventure was $84.99 plus taxes+shipping at Costco.com.

I know this is a tough time to travel but I guess it won't hurt to throw it out here.
Leave phx around July 14, return from amsterdam august 19
Dates are a little flexible.
Best I've found was 1200 which is way higher than I've ever paid for it.
Any advice?

JHB 05-08-2007 10:22 AM

For Disney, I've found that http://www.mousesavers.com/ is a great resource. They don't sell anything themselves, but the site is very up-to-date on how to get the best deals, where to buy tickets (or not to buy), latest promotions, etc.

Last time we went to Disney World, one of the problems was there are too many books and websites. Just trying to figure out which ones to explore was hard. This is definitely on my keeper list.

please please help me find a deal - BOS->LAS

So I am a long time lurker... first post... I am desperate!! And after reading this thread attempting to follow each word of advice, I have realized I am not as deal savvy as I thought!!

The situation: I am attending a bachelorette party weekend in Vegas... the hotel is already booked (spending a lot on a suite) so I need a flight that isn't going to abuse my credit card any further.

The dates and times are not really flexible either (sigh) so it needs to be BOSTON-LAS VEGAS: August 24 (Fri) to August 26. Friday needs to be in the morning so I dont get there at night! And Sunday preferably not in the morning... lets be serious a cross country flight in a hungover state would not be so good:vomit:

Southwest doesnt fly from Boston, just Prov and NH - which would be a huge pain for me...
(I could list all the sites I have gone to, but there are too many I think...)
Airtran works for the trip TO vegas ($129 it says) but there is none on Sunday!

If someone could work their magic, I would appreciate it... any coupon codes would def be helpful too... you are saving the last dimes of a grad student's bank account!!!:worship:

I didn't see anything lower than $294 roundtrip at this time, but if you were brave, you might find some weekend specials much closer to the time in the middle of the summer heat. The flight I saw on Orbitz was: $268 + $26 taxes & fees = $294 per person ("Only 4 tickets left at this price!")

Leave: Thu, Aug 23 (chose to check out a late flight Thursday but Friday was same $$)
US Airways 971
Boston, MA (BOS)-Las Vegas, NV (LAS)..Non-stop
Depart: 8:20pm
Arrive: 11:01pm
* Economy
* 5hr 41min
* Airbus A320
* View seats

Return: Sun, Aug 26
US Airways 66 operated by AMERICA WEST DBA US AIRWAYS
Las Vegas, NV (LAS) - Boston, MA (BOS)
Depart: 10:45pm
Arrive: 6:51am
Non-stop
* Economy
* 5hr 6min
* Airbus A319
* View seats

Being a student, you might be able to access student fares. I'd also consider the red-eye flights. But I had no luck finding anything lower myself. Perhaps others will.

dmyh 05-09-2007 04:44 AM

Last minute flights to big cities. no coupon codes needed.

this worked for me, might help other last minute travelers. needed to go to Boston-Washington area this weekend, flights were about $244, and that was for Providence-Baltimore!.

went to airline sites and looked up "last-minute" travel and "weekend packages" these packages tend to include flight and hotel, or flight and rental car.

I found a flight from boston-baltimore, $188 total, includes a rental car (unlim mileage)! this was by far cheaper than anything else i was able to find, and the car now allows me to drive myself into DC. Or i can just have my brother pick me up and forget about the car. there are also last minute flight and hotel packages for a bit more money (of course they catch you on upgrades)

here is the FIXED american link:

http://aa.lastminute-packages.com/

here is delta's last minute link:
http://deltavacations.lmdeals.com/index.html

you dont get the best deal, but if you're looking for a flight in the next 1-2 weeks, this might be a good option if you are travelling to a big city.

I found a cruise on Royal Caribbean from Los Angeles to Baja Mexico that I want to book. There are several sites with the EXACT same lowest price (down to the penny) including royal caribbean's own site.

I am wondering if there is any advantage to booking this cruise with any particlular site? (any kind of "points" or percentage off or rebates for linking from a certain site)

Thanks

If you don't a a credit card that earns you points or air miles or some other goodie, it doesn't matter; but before you book the cruise really checks out other possible discounts...are you over 50? a member of a particular group (teachers, lawyer, etc.)...it's hard to believe you can't find a discount somewhere ... unless possibly you're trying to book one of the upper suites or something. BTW, you gotta have a credit card that give you something back...airmiles are great...lots of way to optimize those. Same with hotels, but I'm cheap when it comes to hotels...but I have two cards for them too. What are dates?

I'm not being sarcastic honest...but have you done a 'search/google' for myrtle beach resorts? It's a beautiful beach, nice town, but you do have to do a bit of the work yourself...if you want information about specific places try tripadvisor.com; or try this site [myrtlebeachtravels.com]. There's a lot of places, and prices...you need to check expedia, kayak, and other sites for more information. We're willing to help, but you have to start the basic search yourself. There's literally thousands of places to stay...do have a great time, it's a lovely place and great stuff to do and good restaurants.

I don't know which sites you've checked, but it appears your price range is in the $250/day range. It's really late in the season to be looking; but have you tried VRBO.com (vacation rental by owner); also Expedia has a several nice hotels that are across from the beach for about 1/2 the price. What hotel memberships do you have? Any points to use? Hilton and Hampton both have nice member programs, even Comfort Inn and the other Intercontinental's have good offers (join if you haven't) - you'll get the discounts even before you stay. Are you eligible for other discounts? Age, membership, road service club?? If you want to see specific properties (hotels) look at tripadvisor.com...real people, with real opinions. You need to do a bit more homework to help you ... deals are out there, but you have to give more info and do a bit more googling ... best of luck and have a great time!

mystery250 07-14-2007 12:38 AM

Here's a tip that I figured out is true..

Bookings flights online is the cheapest when you do it between 12am and 5am on Wednesdays. If you do it on a Saturday, you'll see that it could be a heckload more.

For an example. I searched hundreds of airlines this evening. Lowest I could find from SAV to DFW round trip coach class was 336.

Last wednesday during those wee hours, I was able to find $212. That's well over a hundred less.

This seems to be quite consistant - I have tried it over a several week period, and that does seem to be the cheapest time to book a flight online.

Hope this helps someone.

Group rates on airfare?

Does anyone know how this works? Googled and saw a bunch of websites advertising 'group rates' on airfares. I'm wondering if the airlines themselves offer reduced rates if you call them directly.

Any help is appreciated.

This would be along the lines of 10-25 people for a continental 48 states trip, looking for the best price. Seem to be plenty of sub-$250 fares now for the dates/cities we need, but just wondering if the airlines will knock more $$ off for a group.

True -- but their prices beat all of the other on-line travel sites, including Travelocity; Expedia; etc.

We will be traveling in New York and Washington DC in 5 days. LGA is the airport we will arrive. Hotels are expensive in NY city. I desperately need some suggestions on hotels. My friends suggest me to stay in New Jersey and the hotels also offer free breakfast. But which area OR hotel should I stay to be able to get into NY city fast? We are going to see NY city for 2-3 days, then rent a car to DC. So we need to stay in a Hotel that can provide transportation into NY city.
I put New Jersey on Priceline Hotel search, but I must know the city's name before performing any search on hotels in New Jersey.
We also need help on rental cars, they are also much expensive in NY!

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Does anyone know of any ski trip deals, probably about 4 nights and around late Novemeber/ December??

Blade107 10-12-2007 06:53 AM

I'm looking for the best price fare form Brazil here in the US and back to Brazil. Taxes and fees included.

I need to be able to purchase the tickets here as is a Xmas present to a very dear relative.

Rio de Janeiro - Brazil>>Tampa - FL and back of course.

The dates are kinda flexible: Dec 12-15 and the return Jan 18-22. One stop each way.

I'm really not that good with airline fares and would really appreciate any suggestion or input on this.

If you like PM me.

Thanks a a lot!

I Love A Deal 10-12-2007 01:22 PM

check out the following websites: trip advisor.com - can search multiple sites after enter dates; check airlines websites which may offer better deals than general searches; try more than one airport, if appropriate; look into which days are cheaper to travel. Also, are there sites that specialize in your destination? If you would consider layover may get better deal than straight flight; hotel/air packages may be cheaper than just a flight. Trip advisor can help with that too. Sign up with travel zoo, Sherman's Travel and airlines for deals to be emailed to you. Well, that should be a good start. Also, sign up with forum for tripadvisor.com and frommers.com to post question re: best way to travel to your desination for best deal. Good luck!

llamaofarabia 10-12-2007 02:36 PM

The price really depends on what you want to do. If someone is willing to pick up your dear relative from MCO(Orlando) then you could save 400 dollars

With your conditions I found: 1356 on Delta via ATL

however from MCO I found 959 on Copa Airlines via Panama City

All taxes and fees included. PM me and I can email you the itinerary and fare codes

Blade107 10-12-2007 10:53 PM

Thanks to both of you for the helpful hints.

I found a $1,113 fare with United. Total price. Goes to Washington-Dulles before Tampa and the layover time is minimal.

December is really expensive to travel from/to South America.

I Love A Deal 10-21-2007 05:59 AM

And one additional site is smartertravel.com. There are all kinds of articles about travel, using skymiles, airfare and hotel deals and you can search for best airfare. You can also sign up for regular emails from them which will provide you with travel updates such as current airfare deals. Definitely worth checking out!

I think tripadvisor.com may have some. You may also want to see if priceline would have some even if you don't book air or hotel. Also, register at fodors.com forum and ask their. The site is focused on travel so you may get some good responses. You can go directly to the country and possiibly state and ask. Go and look around. Also, if you know thhe attractions, do a google search using name of attraction and coupon. Check out travelusa.com as well. You most likely will be amazed at what you find. Good luck.

Read my earlier post in this thread. Places like travel advisor should allow you to search multiple airline sites. www.travelusa.com, bookingbuddies.com, ultimatefares.com and the individual airlines. If you sign up with smartertravel.com should be able to arrange to get special airfare deals for your destination emailed to you. I think that hotwire.com does that too.

Any recommendations on optimal time to purchase tix to BOM from PDX for travel in Mar/Apr next year. Also are "low" fare times usually consistent for various airlines? Our dates are flexible and was trying to position the vacation optimally. Thirdly, we're going to have an infant on the trip (<6 months). Most websites do not offer a bassinet option for the type of seat needed - do we necessarily need to go through a travel agent for such tix?

Appreciate the help....

Slickdeal for anyone who's flying - www.kayak.com | List Of Best Airline Ticket Sites

Please do not delete this thread as I'm sure many of us are unaware this site exists. Just used it to book a $599 trip from NYC-Prague.

www.kayak.com

Searches every airline's website (also searches orbitz, cheaptickets, etc)

CalBear526 11-10-2007 06:17 AM

This site is fantastic.

I was able to book RT tickets from Austin to Orange County using it for $130 each earlier this year.

dondeal80 11-10-2007 06:22 AM

There are a number of different sites out there that do this - some will put certain airlines in and then leave other airlines out. In almost each case it is now cheaper (after using the site) to go to the (low fare) airline site directly and then see if they even have it cheaper (50% of the time).

Malyshka 11-10-2007 06:26 AM

The BEST site is www.yapta.com. They will search for particular flights, not just flights in general. They also keep checking your flight after you have bought it, and help you get a refund for the price difference if the price goes down. This is the only site that will do that (and remember, ALL airlines give refunds for the price difference as long as you booked directly through an airline, and do not use expedia, etc.)

I LOVE Yapta!!! :heart2:

zinnia56 11-10-2007 06:30 AM

I have used kayak for some time; but like the other poster...I find it less expensive to find the deal on kayak, then go to the actual airline website and purchase the ticket at an even lower rate.

minang 11-10-2007 06:43 AM

Will try yapta.com. I usually use kayak, mobissimo, and farecompare.

How does that work? Kayak actually DOES send you to the airline's site. I've never noticed that going directly there is any cheaper.

On a philosophical note, I'm sure the site makes its money off of referral fees; if everyone follows your model and goes directly to the site that elimates the fees and this cool tool ceases to exist. Personally I'm willing to pay for a useful service and I use Kayak or Sidestep 2-4 times / month.

None of them compare to Yapta, truly. ALL other sites stop once you buy your flight. Yapta does not. It continues to work for you to get your best rate (at no cost to you). They email you the minute the flight you bought drops down in price so you can call the airlines to get the refund (or for a 10% fee they will get the refund for you).

Dump kayak, sidestep, orbitz, etc.

Go to http://www.itasoftware.com/
then to "search airfares using QPX" --> "Login as guest"

This is the company that writes the software that most of the other commercial sites use.

They have removed the dumbing down that the other sites do. They also remove the flashy ads. Hope you will not miss those.

The best thing is the flexiability of the flights offered including if purchasing 2 one-way tickets on different airlines is better.

You will have to go to the airline to book. That is a good thing often other sites chrge a booking fee if you buy it on their site. Also buying from the airline removes a middleman if there is an issue later on.

as :yummy: I've found that they all pretty close to each other as far as price........

The best way to book a flight is after midnight as all the sites reset the seats availble and there are also more availible and the costs drop. Also, delete your "cookies". If you do, you have a better chance of seeing a lower price if it drops since your last time at a sight.....

I forgot to mention, for example that fare from N.Y. to Prague. By which airline?
If you had chosen to fly from say another site in the U.S. to an intermediate city - may be cheaper and then some of the other fare sites (expedia) for example will list european airlines - some of those are very cheap, plus gives you an intermediate stop. Say N.Y. to Frankfurt then book the german airline Luftanasa to Prague; usually about $20 + tax($100). Luftanasa will use a smaller airline "Eurowings". If the tax amount needs explaination - VAT(Value Added Tax) - european community! Just a added thought!

KAYAK is a great site...I fly about once a month and has features (check boxes) along the left side that make easy to try various flight combinations.

Another good one is ITASOFTWARE.com, click on choice for flight info, then LOGIN as Guest. Once in the site, you can check a month long schedule and see the cheapest available flight. This way you can judge whether your price is good. Also you can tell if leave on different day, how much the cost difference is.

Note: none of these sites check SWA - so you still gotta check them separate.

I agree. I've used this site before and it provides a lot more options in finding the flights you need than other sites. It even gives you warnings, such as "tight connection" or "long layover," if needed. I highly recommend anyone add this to the sites they reference with searching for flights.

Aside from ITA, I generally use sidestep.

Some are just preference, but I did find the lowest price on Kayak. Im sure it depends on the ticket as well. Remember, these are engines that search all the different airfare sites.

gerald 11-10-2007 12:28 PM

Mentioned earlier but important

when you're deep into fare searching, stop every so often and blow out your temp files and cookies. Many times I have tried to go back to a fare I had seen only minutes earlier and it was "no longer available." Delete cookies, come back fresh and hey whaddaya know, there it is. Bastages.

Searching for fares is so much work (sigh), sometimes I almost long for the days of travel agents.
