1GB Bonus Dropbox Storage for FREE

Via the Dropbox Forums [dropbox.com]:

Quote:

I'm very happy to announce the very first Dropquest! Dropquest will be a special event that gives YOU a chance to win free space and fantastic prizes not available anywhere else! While the actual event won't start until Saturday, I thought I'd give you guys an idea of what to expect.

The Details:

◦Who: You!
◦What: Dropquest is a multi-step scavenger hunt that will test your wits and knowledge. Expect to hop around the Dropbox site and the internet to find answers to easy and not-so-easy puzzles.
◦When: Saturday January 15, 2011 11:00 AM PST (7:00 PM GMT).
◦Where: The link will be available from this thread, but you can bookmark this link [dropbox.com]for the actual day (deactivated for now)
Prizes:

Completion: 1 GB for life
Dropquest will also be timed, and the fastest finishers will be rewarded with even more fantastic prizes. So don't be late on Saturday!

◦1st place: (1) Dropbox hoodie (Psychobox), LIMITED EDITION Dropbox Hack Week t-shirt (actual design), Dropbox drawing by Jon signed by the Dropbox team, 50 GB for life!
◦2nd place: (10) Dropbox hoodie (Psychobox), Dropbox print by Jon signed by the Dropbox team, 10 GB for life!
◦3rd place: (20) Dropbox t-shirt (Psychobox), 5 GB for life!
◦4th place: (50) 1 GB for life!
...and more!
Based on the wording, I believe that anyone who completes the quest will get 1 GB of free space. The fourth place (50) 1 GB for life prize is on top of the completion bonus, but I'm not sure on that.

Good luck everyone!

UPDATE: Prizes are all long gone, but everyone can follow the steps in the wiki to earn 1 GB of free bonus space for your dropbox account.

Go to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011 to start which is important and further on to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/D
5305404/18681 = 284
Go to http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=284 , look at post 3 and download Step4.zip
In the zip it says 38.889, -94.703 - Those are coordinates and they mention a mascot. Google Maps: 38.889, -94.703. This School is close by and their mascot is huskies
Open Step5.zip which is inside Step4.zip, with the pass “huskies” and go to http://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/r
Finish the puzzle (solution) and you are sent to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/0
The 3612th prime number is “33739”, it will send you to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/p
It refers to this picture at the Dropbox blog
Look at the picture, in the background is a yellow paper with an address to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/b
Solve the sudoku (you can use this solver or look at the solution), it leads you to: https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/o
It wants you to go home, which means jump to the Dropbox homepage at https://www.dropbox.com
Go there and click the link at the top where it says it’s not over, it will lead you to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/x
The “book” is this forum thread
The post refers to this blog post
Click on Katana-ya at item 5 for your Step16.zip
In the zip file is a link to http://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/h and a image
The image from Step16.zip, it’s HEX color code is “BAFF1E”, enter it and you are taken to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/e
The names are anagrams for classic composers. The classic composer for Dropbox, is CEO “Drew Houston”, enter that and you are taken to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/a
The signs you see here are in braille and it says “help 206”, this is a hint for this page: http://www.dropbox.com/help/206
Download the Step21.zip
Place the picture from the zip in a dropbox folder and share it with dropquest@dropbox.com
Hint22.txt appears in the folder, which leads you to https://www.dropbox.com/votebox/3...zen-yogurt
This is a reference to Rian Hunter which can be found at https://www.dropbox.com/about
Click at Rian Hunter this leads you to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/R
The text is a reference to the game Chrono Trigger and the side quest Rainbow Shell, the link to the zip is therefore http://dl.dropbox.com/u/211024/rainbowshell.zip
In the zip you will find an address to http://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/t and a midi file
The key phrase is the notes from the midi file, which is: “badcabbage” and this leads you to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/s
Print out the paper, fold the paper to a crane and across it’s wings it says 11696 x 96911, which equels the the code “1133471056” on the wings. Enter the code and you are taken to https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/U
Last puzzle! Remember those dropquest URL’s? The last letter, they form the the last code: “Dr0pbox heaRts U”
And you are done: https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest...inish_line
Check your score at https://www.dropbox.com/dropquest...ll_of_fame
Have fun :)
Answers:

Confirmed by the Dropbox staff via a reply to the blog post: You will earn additional storage space each step you progress along the quest, and this extra space is separate from the grand prizes for being among the first to finish.

Quote:

dropquest will be available for two weeks, so if you're not fussed about the prizes you can start at any time during those two weeks. the 1 gig can be earned at any time during those two weeks.
Once the quest has been solved and the solution posted, it should be an easy 1 GB of extra space even if you don't want to try for the bonus prizes.

Step 8 -

Bring your thinking cap for your next stop.
Let's remember to take things slowly though.
Often, it's best to look behind the obvious.
Go forth, to victory!

First letter of each sentence spell "BLOG", went to blog, 1st photo of latest post has a URL that leads to:

http://www.dropbox.com/dropquest2011/b

But that leads to Step 10. What's Step 9?

Help is correct. BJF is wrong. Look at another braille chart. And then go to the help section once you got the second part right.

That part alone took the longest. Frustrating part is the pieces sometimes refuse to shift on first click, so gotta do it more than once.

EDIT: When I think about it, 3gb is just about enough for most 720p movies. Convenient for sending movies to people.

Yes, even though it might be easy for you it might be challenging to others. I'm an artist (musically and videography) and a writer. Nothing in that puzzle is easy for the way my mind functions.

exclusive784 01-15-2011 07:34 PM

uhh what's step 9? I go directly to step 10 and when I finish that, I don't get the "continue the hunt" at the home page

anothauserhere 01-15-2011 07:34 PM

Thanks Op and everyone. 56 rough minutes went by and I wasn't even aware of it.

jayeskreezy 01-15-2011 07:37 PM

This is the same mind that struggles with Sudoku...which is why I don't do it. Can't we draw a picture or write a haiku or something?

I was getting the same things, then I decided to do all the steps in order instead of jumping around trying to finish quicker. Once I did that I no longer got the 404 error, thus getting the full gig of extra space.

Have fun :)

only 2 gigs of that is available for syncing... Dropbox is vastly superior... Plus it's not MS, so it can be used on a variety of OSs, and even android.

Because it's DropBox. DropBox is a full package that allows easy syncing between many devices and other features. It's not just your layman's file dump.

If you wanted to win the special prizes, it's too late. When they say fastest, they mean first ones to solve it overall. Not the amount of time it takes you to do it individually.
But, here's the twitter page for the 1st place winner. Some Singaporean girl: http://twitter.com/#!/veronism

There are a lot of things that DropBox does better than Windows Live.
If you want lots of space for storage, there are many of file sharing sites that give you that.

Not against the rules for DropBox. Might be against SD rules. Although, in this case, I doubt the mods will care.
If only a referral link had been posted earlier, I could have gotten in on an extra 250MB :(

Can I access hard files on my computer if I don't have internet access? What about from my iPhone or iPad? Does the synchronization feature work with a Mac? Could I sync program files with it (1Password for instance), like I can with Dropbox? How secure is SkyDrive (encryption wise)?
