Baratza Virtuoso burr grinder (for coffee) on clearance at Williams-Sonoma B&M for $49.99 (highly YMMV)

I just picked up the last 2 of these at my local Williams-Sonoma (Cross Keys location in Baltimore) for $49.99 each, which is a phenomenal price. Hopefully someone else will have the same good luck or at least find one for $79 or $99 (NB: the average retail price is $199.99). This will be highly YMMV, I expect.

I'd suggest calling first since the Baratza Virtuoso is out of stock online (http://www.williams-sonoma.com/pr...chRules-_-) and becoming very rare in B&M stores also.

W-S is changing up their grinder line and discontinuing these, but the grinder itself is still very much in production and will continue to be supported by the manufacturer. I know a few people who have had Virtuosos for years and love them. The grind is supposedly very consistent.

A few reviews/links for the curious:

Thanks to forum member EricBNC for the tip!

jbviau 01-20-2011 12:15 PM

p.s. In case anyone's looking, the grinders I managed to find were not on display. Be sure to ask a salesperson to check their inventory and/or look in the back.

xsaero00 01-20-2011 12:37 PM

Thanks for the tip. Just went out on my lunch break and picked up last one at my local store (Galeria at Roseville, CA) for 49.99. This is awesome deal! :woot: I was looking to replace my aging DeLonghi DCG4T. This a great find. The clerk at the store checked
other stores for stock. She said some LA store had 6 still. But it costs to send items to home so I did not order them. So if someone wants it call up the store and see if you can have it sent to you.

Got some extra virgin olive oil for 75% off too.

Wompa164 01-20-2011 12:47 PM

If anyone is able to grab an extra one of these, could you please PM me? I've been looking for this grinder at a decent price for a long time. I almost considered buying a refurb even though I HATE buying refurbished products because all the coffee heads seem to love this grinder.

Anyways long story short, if you have an extra or are able to get your hands on an extra, please, please PM and we can work something out. Thanks!

SWEEEEEEEEET! Deal of the year for me, thanks OP!

Went to my local W&S (Broomfield, CO), price was still listed as $199, lady looked up price on PC and came out to $49.99. They only had the display model left, despite a missing timer knob & no further "display discount" I got it anyway because this is a steal. Been wanting to get exactly this grinder for almost 1.5 years now. THANKS!

jbviau 01-21-2011 08:15 AM

Nice! Exactly. It's hard to beat this deal if you're a coffee lover. I know someone in PA who got a 10% discount on his display model despite the clearance price, but I suppose it depends on who you're dealing with. At any rate, I'm willing to bet Baratza will send you a free replacement knob. Check out question #9 in this FAQ: http://www.baratza.com/troublesho...cg1&code=5

jbviau 01-22-2011 11:14 AM

Just a bump to see if anyone else has been able to find one of these. I doubt they'll last long.

sknight398 01-23-2011 10:31 PM

I was about to pull the trigger on buying a a Hamilton grinder for $29.99 that supposedly grinds to espresso fineness quite well. Then I found this post. Hmm, I think I'll wait until morning to call my local store because if I missed out I would be extremely angry!

That hamilton grinder is not even close to the same quality and cannot touch the grinding ability.

jbviau 01-24-2011 04:11 AM

True, the Virtuoso would be much better. You can even open it up pretty easily and shift the whole range of settings finer or coarser depending on your needs, decrease or increase the RPM, etc. (see FAQ link upstream). Good luck!

amytude 01-24-2011 04:16 AM

TU for the great deal even though it is YMMV. Gonna go check out my WS today. I need a coffee grinder and don't want to buy the junky ones.

laceyhannah 01-24-2011 04:58 AM

Not as nice as my Vario but definitely an incredible grinder..., especially at this price. Baratza sells the Virtuoso new for $225 and refurbished online for $143. $50 is definitely an SD!

Thanks. I think so too. If there were more in my area, I'd pick up a spare. Hopefully other parts of the country are still not quite tapped out.

I know, right? My thinking was that the title needed to mention coffee so people wouldn't think this was for spices or something. Maybe I should give SD'ers more credit. ;)

I don't know this for a fact...but, I've "heard" of people using coffee grinders for other things.

:D

Jabes 01-24-2011 05:31 AM

Fantastic price if you can find one. Burr grinders are the way to go if you are even half serious about grinding your own coffee. I wish there were more coffee equipment deals on SD.
Now someone go find me a La Marzocco GS/3 for $1000! :)

Found one for $989. Whoops it's dead, OOS, bad reviews, shipping killed it.

UN0335 01-24-2011 07:16 AM

Does anyone have the WS SKU # handy? TIA.

jluna 01-24-2011 07:18 AM

I finally stopped using my Mazzer Super Jolly for drip and "upgraded" my drip grinder to a Virtuoso two months ago. What a difference the Virtuoso made, a major improvement. Too bad I just spent $199.99 on this not long ago.

On the upside I called a William Sonoma where my sister lives to check the stock. The manager said they only had the floor model left and there was no box/warranty. As a result she took half off the price. So I was able get the grinder for $25!! Quite the slick deal, repped OP!

Shipping would kill it, I hear those things are delivered strapped to a pallet... ::drool::

Jmana 01-24-2011 07:24 AM

I got the last 2 locally, came home and immediately listed the one for $120 on ebay and sold it 45 minutes later:D So basically I got the one I am keeping for free, can't beat that;)

for 'other' medicinal needs, a simple blade grinder is best.

hsdrggr 01-24-2011 09:33 AM

Picked a display model up at an Orlando, FL store. I live about an hour away from there, however they were happy to ship it to me for $10. Well worth it. Total with tax shipped $64.42. Should have it in a day or two. I'm a happy camper.

You can probably call any of there retail stores and have them ship to you. Google Search is great.

UN0335 01-24-2011 10:08 AM

[QUOTE=jbviau;36648217]Ok, here you go: 9086836

Thanks, but none in my area. The employee did say that there were 2 in Citrus Park (Tampa) and one in The Mall at Millenia in Orlando. Good luck.

UN0335 01-24-2011 10:15 AM

Scratch that, none left in Citrus Park store.

jbviau 01-24-2011 10:18 AM

Bummer. Maybe you'll have better luck in Orlando?

tparks 01-24-2011 10:36 AM

OK I am crying inside because this truly SD is happening Pre-Tax return. I have a burr grinder that is still working (but I was seriously planning on upgrading). Anyway, I am not getting this deal but before I made this decision I did some research.

The Item# is 9086836

A New York store apparently has 3 in stock and a Connecticut store has 2.

The cost to have it shipped here (Texas) was $10.50 plus tax $65.48 total.

The NY store phone# is 212-823-9750
The Conn. store is 203-221-8667

Good Luck!

compliance 01-24-2011 10:47 AM

This is an amazing deal. Hope my WS hasn't been raided yet! I can upgrade my Baratza Maestro and hand that down to my parents.

jbviau 01-25-2011 05:31 AM

DE and Eastern PA seem tapped out now. Wonder if there are any more Virtuosos out there still?

justme- 01-25-2011 08:51 AM

New England tapped out- actually when I went into my local W&S last evening the guy looked in the system and said only 2 other stores had inventory showing more than 1 and gave me their numbers (neither had the item). In Retail, inventory is often off by 1 or 2, especially with such low numbers- he said (and I agree) odds are the only thing left in a store will be a display model by now. Apparently they have been OOS in the B&M for a while- not even an empty space on the shelf for them.

He also said W&S is having their inventory done this coming Monday- sounded like a corporate wide or region wide inventory - not uncommon in some chains.

Worth dropping in to a local if you are near, but otherwise seems like it's all but dead.

I'm interested in one if someone happens to find an extra in their local store.....

RHCCapri 01-25-2011 09:40 AM

There are no Williams-Sonoma stores within 100 miles of your location :(

jbviau 01-25-2011 09:57 AM

Don't forget you can have one shipped from further away for ~$10 if you manage to find one available.

lebigmac 01-25-2011 10:59 AM

what a deal but i am almost certain the cashiers are keeping it for the ebay sales.....

If you are in NASHVILLE, head over there, they have 2 in stock and their number is 615-292-5066

If you are able to pry it away from their hands, please buy one more for me...

Due to the weight of this small-but-solid grinder, I'll bet W-S could ship it to you directly for cheaper than a fellow SD'er could. Could be wrong though.

azarene8u0 01-25-2011 11:20 AM

I just missed this deal at the W-S store at Columbus Circle NYC. Too bad I flew home yesterday. I tried calling but they ran out and the one in Nashville said they did not have any in stock.

Do you guys have any luck in finding it at any other stores?

linuxworks 01-25-2011 11:24 AM

this does not look like a decent unit.

they are normally $100 or so for these entry level burr grinders. I have one that I never use (bought a few yrs ago) and I use a $500 one now (moka livia) that was on close-out for well under $100.

the ones that dump into a bin (this one) are not my first choice. I prefer the doser types.

The Maestro, soon to be discontinued, is Baratza's entry-level unit. This Virtuoso is heavier with nicer burrs and a pulse button. It's definitely a good step up for me from the Hario Skerton manual grinder I was using before, and it's pretty well-reviewed on CoffeeGeek and elsewhere. At this price, it's a steal. Sounds like you got a slick deal on your Livia too!

linuxworks 01-25-2011 12:00 PM

this burr grinder looks a LOT like the solace one I got years ago at peets, on close-out. it was in the $99 range, normal price.

they DO work and they get by just fine. burr is great.

I hate having the coffee dump into a bucket and then have to scoop it up and measure it. much prefer when you click it into a doser like they have at real coffee bars ;)

this is the one I found. if you look for used older models, you can get these and just clean them up. they are made to be repairable, at this price level. buy it once and own it forever. get really fine control over the ground, too.

jbviau 01-25-2011 12:12 PM

I think you've got the Solis Maestro in mind, which is the same as the Baratza Maestro but *not* this one. For more than you might want to know about the Maestro, Virtuoso, and other Baratza grinders, see here: http://baratza.com/blog/wp-conten...s-SM-3.pdf

skeester 01-26-2011 07:02 AM

Got one!!

I called Internet customer service and he called a bunch of stores for me and found one. ~$60 shipped. It is supposed to be delivered today! Cant wait. Looks like my old skool Kitchenaid grinder is going up on ebay.

linuxworks 01-26-2011 07:08 AM

when you get a really good grinder, then you are obligated to follow the rest of the laws. I mean, rules. ;)

fresh beans from a good supplier. don't let them sit around either at the store or at home. beans can't be old.

after you grind, you have to use the grinds in 15-30 minutes or they are 'bad' in air. they lose the magic if after 15-30 minutes or so of sitting. so, grind JUST before you need it and throw out old/stale grinds if they sat too long.

the grinder is half the battle. the beans are the other half ;) but the result is worth it..

/yes, I take coffee seriously ;)

ffccoffee 01-26-2011 07:54 AM

Probably done

I called a dozen stores today across the country. None left anywhere. One worker complained they have got a bunch of calls about it. One worker laughed and said good luck.

I went to two local stores, and they were OOS as well. Someone over on the coffee geek forums said they picked up 11 of them when they found them and are now on eBay.

Looks like I missed out on a good deal.

Same deal...I bought the other one. If you guys want one, just call Internet CS...they'll tell you where they are, and then connect you to that store to verify stock/place order
I can't imagine shipping would be different from one end of the country to another...

ffccoffee 01-26-2011 09:05 AM

Nope

Just got off the phone with Internet CS. There was only one location that had more than 2 listed in stock. They contacted that location, and they are all gone. Representative called several more stores with 2 listed, but none are available. I think the deal is dead unless someone stumbles on to a display model at a local shop.

The guy who hoarded 11 machines says you can contact him if you're really interested, so maybe he didn't put *all* of his Virtuosos on eBay at once. Guess he didn't want to drive the price down too much.

Did anyone have any luck contacting this guy?
