Barnes & Noble up to 50% off One Item via Printable Coupon - March 31st - April 3rd

Hi everyone,

I just saw an e-mail from B&N featuring their "mystery coupon" again. Basically, depending on the coupon you received, the discount could be 10, 15, 20, 30, 50% off. The last time this happened, every single SDer received the 50% off code/e-mail :D

If anyone missed it last time, this works great on Star Wars: The Complete Saga Bluray pre-order ($44.80+tax): Linky [barnesandnoble.com]
Just go to the customer service desk, place your order and take the printout with the barcode to the cashier. That's when you present your coupon to get the 50% off. Although most of us were able to order it this way during the last deal, some were told that the coupon excluded pre-orders (so, YMMV).
It should also work on The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition pre-order [barnesandnoble.com].

Here are the 50% off multi-use in store coupons:
502001 - Nonmember 50% [barnesandnoble.com]
106381 - Member 50% [barnesandnoble.com]

Rest of the coupons, in case someone doesn't like getting items at half price
501961 - Nonmember 10% [barnesandnoble.com]
501971 - Nonmember 15% [barnesandnoble.com]
501981 - Nonmember 20% [barnesandnoble.com]
501991 - Nonmember 30% [barnesandnoble.com]
106351 - Member 15% [barnesandnoble.com]
106361 - Member 20% [barnesandnoble.com]
106371 - Member 30% [barnesandnoble.com]

Are these still good for board games? I heard they don't accept them anymore, don't see any exclusion in the fine print.

Hey, your post has everything right except the Member coupons.

There are only 4, not 5. See the wiki for my listing. :-)

tenderidol 03-31-2011 01:15 AM

If you received the actual e-mail, there will be a code for online orders. I just put that in and it works on Nook accessories, whereas in store coupon doesn't work on Nook accessories. Just a heads up if you need anything from that category.

Yes, there are always more exlusions than inclusions with B&N coupons. :) However, they were always better than borders: MSRP vs. sale price off.

The coupon takes 50% off from the online price. Remember, when you place the order at the customer service desk, you are ordering at $89.59. When you go to the cashier with the order form that has a barcode to pay for it, the 50% off coupon works on your subtotal, not the list price.

I am actually looking at my receipt from the last 50% off coupon and it shows $44.80 subtotal

So the CSR desk is the desk in the video section where you order but the cashier is in the front of the store?

If so, than that makes sense.

I love these coupons. Going to be getting a few books I need tomorrow.

In theory, it should work, since the Groupon is applied as a payment method (i.e., electronic gift card) and not as a coupon. I guess, it is still YMMV, though. Just dont give both at the same time ;)

I have 1 B&N groupon left, so I'll know for sure tomorrow.

I'd like to pre-order Star Wars Saga on bluray :coverlaf:

If they tell you that you can order it online, you can tell them that you'd like to pay in cash (need to launder some drug money). Just dont mention that you have a coupon, since you wont be applying the coupon until you pay at the register.

variablex 03-31-2011 02:12 AM

Think they would allow you to print off a lot of these coupons and use them one after another?

shadowshopper 03-31-2011 02:16 AM

Can anyone spare an online email code for 50% because there is a blu-ray that is only 4% off at amazon and 14% off at B&N and I would love to get it for 50% off as it apparantly never goes on sale.

Actually, you do know before going to the store, because the e-mail you received has a unique online code -along with the in store code- which you can apply to items in your cart and reveal the coupon percentage. Nevertheless, acting surprised always helps. In some cases, the cashiers will be more excited than you, believe me.

If someone tries the Sat Wars Saga pre-order with the coupon and it works out for them...please post here.

I won't be able to get to a B&N until friday...what happens if I preorder it at the customer service counter and then go to pay for it at the cashier with the coupon and I'm denied? Do I still have to go through with the order at full price?

Also I have an e-gift card code from a survey...can I use it in-store to help pay for the item?

You dont have to do anything if the coupon is denied. Your order will be canceled since you never paid for it.

So you have to pay the money upfront and not receive any product until released date? I was hoping it'd be just like online preorder where you just preorder without having to pay anything until you receive the product...or maybe a $5 down payment for preorder.

Nevertheless, acting surprised always helps. In some cases, the cashiers will be more excited than you, believe me.

I'm new at this, and I don't get it. I clicked on the link, but it took me straight to a coupon that I can print (with no indication as to which percentage I would get) and does not ask for an email.

I would recommend the following board games...

Ticket to Ride (there are a few variants, all are good to my knowledge, but don't buy an expansion)

Dominion (Buy either the base game, or "Dominion: Intrigue")

Pandemic

Smallworld

Is a video game considered electronics? When I put in my code, it changes the code to something completely different and tells me it's not eligible. I thought a video game would be considered a toy since it's in the toy section...

Thanks. Will be looking for these. It took me a while to find Catan the last time around. But the B&N on 86th and Lex in NYC has an extremely good (and well stocked) selection.

Pre-orders are excluded according to the fine print. I wonder if they have 3D Blu-Ray movies, then that would a good deal as long as they haven't already over priced them.

HofstraJet 03-31-2011 06:08 AM

Can you order DVDs/Blu-Rays from a BN store that doesn't have a DVD section? That would be a good way to use the coupon for in-stock items without having to find a store that doesn't have the item in stock. free shipping as a member.

Reg202 03-31-2011 06:14 AM

cool, I think I might have to take a few trips over there. bah, forgot about these "list prices". 50% off and you barely beat amazon :(

Check out Munchkins by Steve Jackson. It's like a D&D card game but much quicker (1 hour or so per game) and much more fun. Very tongue in cheek type of humor.

vickeej 03-31-2011 06:52 AM

You can use the coupon multiple times but the cashiers may get suspicious. I used the same coupon right after my sister last time and she eyed me like something was fishy. lol

Tracey12345 03-31-2011 06:53 AM

Hmmmm...so if it works on blu rays, then you can get a pretty decent deal with the Tangled 3d set in store(if they sell it AND if they have it in stock!) Not sure of the price at BN, but combined with the $5 Disney coupon(do they take coupons?) might make a pretty decent deal.

They also have an online deal where you buy Tangled on DVD or DVD/Blu ray(3D sold out) and another select princess movie and get $12 off instantly. Not sure if you could use the coupon in combination with the $12 discount. I didn't get the B&N email, so I don't have an online code to try.

Zeek 03-31-2011 06:56 AM

So, does anyone want to post their online code once they've placed their order with it? Shouldn't hurt your order if more people try to use it. Then we'll know for sure if they are one time use or just once per account.

massive 03-31-2011 06:57 AM

can someone please send me 50% code for online if they don't want? I want to use it online for something which is online only. PM me please.

ericg123 03-31-2011 06:57 AM

In case my B&N won't let me get the online pre-order price in-store, if anyone has a 50% online code they don't plan on using, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks! :)

(This assumes, of course, the online code is not linked to the e-mail account to which it was sent.)

Anyone find anything cool to buy this time around?

The last time I was able to score 2 Yoda MR Force FX lightsabers (no longer on their site) for $37 each but now I can't find anything to impulse buy. :(

Stacking the lower online price with the in store coupon is really what makes this deal slick every time.

Also, for anyone wondering about lego sets, they should still work because they are in the "Toys and Games" category on the Barnes and Noble site. The lightsabers I bought were put in that category so I was able to get them even though they could have been considered "electronic" by some people.

Doesn't look like any new exclusions were added since the last coupon promotion.

Are people having trouble using it on lego in the stores? Are the computers not taking the coupon?

I was just wondering the same thing. Did the last coupon have the pre-order exclusion on it? Cause that one worked just fine for SW.

That said, I'm still not sure I'd pay $42 for LOTR:EE. Movies split on 2 discs and 9 DVDs of supplements we've already seen. Seriously? They could have at least authored 2 blu-rays for all the extra content. Though I guess more discs helps justify the list price.

Deltaron 03-31-2011 07:18 AM

I rarely go to or buy from B&N. However, on the last day of the previous 50% off coupon I was able to preorder the Star Wars BD 6 movie set with the 50% off. The employee taking my order only took my name, address, and phone number, but not my email address. I noticed they charged my credit card right away for the purchase at the correct amount.

Then I saw posts in the old thread that some people's Star Wars BD preorders were being randomly canceled, so I wondered if that happens to my order how would I know unless they call me or send me something in the mail (both highly unlikely). Is it safe to assume if they cancel my Star Wars preorder I'd see a credit from them on my credit card? If yes, then I guess I'm OK so far.

If I happen to go by the only B&N store in my area before the coupon expires, I might try it on the LOTR BD set (which would be $42 + tax) if they allow it, but given it's very YMMV I'm not going to make a special trip with gas as expensive as it is.

Anyone familiar with their return policy? Could I buy something expensive and then return and use store credit for a Nook?

GolDRoger 03-31-2011 07:26 AM

Some ideas on what to buy:

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes [barnesandnoble.com] ~$45 AC +FS (for anyone who missed out on the last B&N 50% off coupon ;))

The Beatles in Mono Box Set [barnesandnoble.com] ~$75 AC +FS

Darth Maul Single Hasbro Force FX Lightsaber [barnesandnoble.com] ~$80 AC +FS (personally I would prefer a cheaper price but the free shipping makes this an ok deal for anyone who is in the market for one)

Harry Potter 1-7 Hardcover Box Set [barnesandnoble.com] ~$70 AC +FS

Noble Collection Harry Potter Wand(s) [barnesandnoble.com] ~$13-15 each AC (link shows Harry's wand but multiple styles are available)

Otherwise, how is returning an item going to benefit you, since it'll will have the 50% off price you paid on the receipt?

Yes, some places allow a certain number of returns without a receipt, I didn't know if Barnes and Noble does or not.

Depends on whether or not B&N takes returns w/o receipts and how many in a given period.

Imo it's only worth your time if you can bundle a lower online price with the 50% off and then return in store for a significantly higher price (assuming what you bought is sold both in store and online).

Not directly.

The in-store coupon can be used on anything (that is doesn't exclude :() sold online so long as you pay for it in the store.

It's really easy:

1. Order at the customer service desk what you want online (you will get the online price) and select pay in store. Do NOT mention the coupon to the rep because this will only confuse them and make them lie to you that it won't work.

2. Go to the cashier with your printout/receipt and present your 50% off coupon.

3. Act surprised when 55 year old lady behind the counter has a premature heart attack over how lucky you are.

4. Use whatever payment method you want and rejoice in your slickdeal! :D

NOTE: If after the reduced online price +50%off you are still above $25 you also get FREE SHIPPING! :woot:

It all depends on whether or not the computers take the coupon.

I found out during the last round of coupons that they would work on anything they did not exclude regardless of whether or not they were trully bought in store or by ordering at customer service.

The 55 year old lady thing was just an inside joke about what happened to me last time around.

At two different stores, both me and a friend had the coupon right after each other. BOTH times the ladies behind the counter FLIPPED and made it seem like we had just won PCH or something and that we should expect balloons to drop from the ceiling.

In a way I'm kinda dissapointed that there weren't any.

mnxd9 03-31-2011 08:49 AM

So SO SOOOOO Slick.....

Just chanced upon this thread today, just as I was about to leave for B&N (wasn't even looking for coupons for B&N), tottally forgot to print the coupon.

Slick deal pro tip:
Emailed to phone, pulled up coupon on phone, cashier punches in code BAM! 50% off, no need to fuss with printing anything or signing up, all you need is the coupon code, which she read off my phone.

Also the cashier had issues entering the coupon, she needed to just enter the code and not hit the coupon button.

Even after all the slick deals I've done since the discovery of SDs, I can't still help, but giggle.

kholliday 03-31-2011 08:50 AM

Sure. I went to the customer service desk in the center of the store. Explained that the C&H set was cheaper online, and would like them to do a in-store online order. The employee did the order and gave me a order slip to take to the cashier in the front of the store so that I could pay. I handed the order slip and the 50% coupon to the cashier. Cashier didn't even act surprised or bat an eye. Got the set for $45 + tax.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Either you order it at full price online, or at 50% in store after paying at the spot.

Looking at the link and the succession of numbers, this is the line up:

501961 - Nonmember 10% [barnesandnoble.com]

Here is a 15% code 5VK39Y

I was just going to post that! I have two separate accounts and received two completely different codes in the emails. The code changes when applied (both of mine were 15%) and for both of them it was the same one you posted.

So, ok, who's got a 50%, lol?

Try ordering it at the customer service desk and taking the printout to the cashier. It says that in excludes Nook accessories, but it may work (the situation as pre-orders).

Oh WOW...if a 50% generic online code is made available the floodgates will open!! :) You can then stack cashback to negate the tax you would pay by ordering instore :)

chuckywang 03-31-2011 10:04 AM

If you make an in-store online order, do you still get the 10% off member discount?

Hi guys I got 20% Code is 5CXEW9

Who's the lucky 50%

fletchnj 03-31-2011 10:05 AM

Last time B&N had a mystery coupon, I printed out the 50% off coupon and it worked just fine at the store. This time, I printed out the 50% off coupon for non-members and took it to my local B&N. When it was scanned at the register, it only came up as a 20% off coupon. Am I doing something wrong?!?!

Thanks OP! Perfect Timing. Has anyone used the 50% coupon along with $20 groupon? I dont think there should be a problem using both.

Shouldn't be too hard. You haven't paid for it yet if they just place the order online. It's going to auto-cancel if there's no payment. BN is really good at that stuff, usually when you don't want them to be.

yeah they don't work just putting the code in, so unless you have to be a member I don't think they work that way.

I took out my 15% just now and tried plugging in the generic 20% code, and I also got invalid. Then when I put my generic 15% code back in, it wouldn't take it (invalid). In order to get it to pop the generic code back up, I had to re-plug in my original email code.

So even though it's a generic code, it seems to be linked to the original email code...

Also, for those who haven't pre-ordered it yet, pay with cash so they can't cancel your order.

It still shows 12/31/2025 when you try to order it online, so I assume it should be the same at the kiosk. However, someone was told that it was pushed to September (don't know whether the cashier is a Star Wars fan who knows the release date or the system has a note regarding when it will be out).

Good idea on using cash. I'll do that for the LOR pre-order today.

Buckwheat 03-31-2011 10:33 AM

Got Lost: The Complete Collection DVD for $229.99- $23 (10%) - $103.5 (50%) = $103.49, tax $9.18 NY= $112.67. The guy before me at the register only had a 15% mystery coupon, so I gave him my extra coupon (50%).

Bonus: I saw Cheryl Burke and Chris Jericho as they were book signing (46th Street & 5th Avenue NY)

NOCAN 03-31-2011 10:37 AM

Nice find OP! Preorder of the Star Wars and LOTR blu rays would definitely be nice 50% off. I guess I'll try the whole customer service pre-order procedure and hope the cashier doesn't know that the coupon shouldn't work on pre-orders. Although I also see the preorders now as $0.00. How is that going to work now?

aprilelizabeth 03-31-2011 10:39 AM

Is it always $0 to pre-order online? Hope it's not like this in-store, because then we can't pay and use these coupons.

SW and LOTR $0

I also saw LOTR and SW Bluray's were $0. Ordered them and used a gift card with $4 as payment. What's the worst they can do cancel my order. Which will probably happen.

That's what it should be... You are using a coupon and they paying with a gift card (i.e., Groupon). As long as they are not presented at the same time, it should work.

cmradude 03-31-2011 10:43 AM

I tried ordering the Star Wars Complete Saga in-store, but the workers couldn't/wouldn't do anything.

Said that the receiving date was 12/2025, and they couldn't order it without an end date.

And plus, they didn't see the $89.99 online price. I couldn't find it myself on my iPhone.

Rattor 03-31-2011 10:43 AM

Looks like the boxed sets are back at normal price now.

I managed to place an order for both when they were $0 :p Maybe they'll actually ship a few at that price.

Either way, I'll probably go to the store and try to order them with the coupon too, just in case.

You know now that I think about it, I'll bet the $0.00 price is just a reservation to be able to order and not the actual order for the blu rays themselves. Which would mean that the coupon is no longer applicable to the pre-orders.

I guess "someone" is following this thread

When I ordered Star Wars last time, the cashier had the same "concern" (I dont know why); then she called the manager, and when she came she told her "what's the problem? as long as he is willing to wait, just order it!"

Good luck! I had them both in my cart for $0 but I figured that's just how they do it online, and it was charging me shipping so I removed them from my cart. Damn, I should have checked out, oh well.

I just ordered two books and I had $30 in Gift Cards on my account. I checked out using Paypal as a backup and I think it charged my Paypal for $31.00. I don't even know what I paid and if I got my coupon to work. Did I make a mistake or something?

The coupon posted here is for in store use only. There are accompanying online codes, but those are unique and you have to have the e-mail send from them (even so, most of them seems to be for 15%).

Flfella 03-31-2011 11:03 AM

This would be a deal if i could get it to work on the Rosetta Stone products.

kholliday 03-31-2011 11:07 AM

There have been a lot of questions so I figured I would share my experience.

I went into the store and headed back to the DVD/Bluray section. I told the lady up front that I had the coupon and wanted to pre-order the Star Wars Saga on Bluray. I apologized ahead of time for potentially wasting her time since if it was anything other than 50% off I was going to leave without making the order. That I was just trying my luck for a good deal. She said that was fine and she wasn't worried about it.

She took all my info and put in the order and then scanned the coupon. She was like "WOW! Not only did you get it for the pre-order price of $90 instead of $140 you also managed to get the 50% off!!" I was like "What?! No way! That's awesome!!" She proceeded to finish ringing me up and I paid $48 and walked out with my order confirmation and receipt. Since then I have received two confirmation emails about my order from Barnes & Noble.

I hope this helps some of you guys.

Nice to have this deal back again! Got the email, but it was only for 20%, knew I'd find the 50% here. I like how the headers of the coupon page state which coupon it is, now I don't have to play the "surprised" act at getting a lucky 50% coupon!

untitled2jc 03-31-2011 11:18 AM

must not be alot of SDers in the Burlington, ma area, went to the store today with a friend, and they said they had not seen a 50% off coupon all day, that it had been mostly 20 or 30s...they were actually quite ecstatic over seeing it, was kind of comical.

What I meant was, give your item (or online order receipt) and the coupon together. Once you are told what your subtotal is for payment, then give your Groupon -as a gift card- and pay the remaining balance.

If you hand out both the coupon and the groupon at the same time, you may receive the "sorry, we can't combine two offers together" response.

Yeah, they are happier than the customer most of the time when a 50% coupon shows up.

i have to add to this YMMV. here's my story (it's short :) ) . went to B&N in park slope, ny, closest to me, but still far and had spent 15 minutes to find parking.
wen to customer service, she pulled up the same , i.e. 2025. she explained that happens when something is pre-order far away and they don't know the date. on that i said that i saw the item on bn.com. Surely she went to different tab in her browser, searched for SW saga in Dvd and ... it came up with 89.59 . "do u want to order? - hmm, sure". she typed my name/address and printed order details. Nothing on that order says "pre-order"!
went to register, gave her order, then coupon. She said "Congratulations, you actually go 50% off, didn't see many!"
So final cost after tax? $48.77 . Nothing prevents them from cancelling it later, but except gas and some time i don't loose anything. well, besides the point that i was debating whether i need it anyway :)

Just came back from a store. I used my member card for 10% off, and then a 50% coupon. Got a "Lego Police Station 7498" (original price: $99.95) for $47.78 after all discount and tax. Then I applied a $20 Groupon towards my purchase without any problem.

sunny2000 03-31-2011 11:34 AM

hmm, too bad i didn't have groupon. i was too busy to figure out groupon when it was available. could have saved another $10 at least.
