Good list. AbeBooks is especially good as it is a listing website for all of the independent bookstores around the country to use. A good way to help keep the little guys in business with B&N and Borders popping up on every corner.

I remember some one posting about a website for books where you list your book and get points. You then use those points to get other books. Does any one remember what website that was?

These lists have been on here before...and of course we all just keep adding to them.

OP, it would be nice if you could take all of the other links that have been posted on here before and make up one huge list...Alphabetical of course.

Then, it would be nice if SD maybe created a Sticky with all of the College Bookstore websites. (sorry, I'm too busy!(aka-LAZY)) :shake:

BTW, I want to throw a SLAM at one site...Powell.com screwed me over this past summer semester. I needed a book they had listed and paid extra for 2 day shipping - it showed up 7 days later...and to top it off...it was the wrong book. After calling them, they did search their warehouse for the book and could not find it...I ended up being late with my first set of assignments and ended up a week and a 1/2 delayed getting my book. Luckily for me, I found a seller on half.com that was able to ship me the book priority mail and I got it rather quickly.

Anyway, just wanted to get my diggs in on Powells - THEY SUCK! Gee, I feel better now!

I had a previous list, which is the first half of this list. The second half are ones that were posted in other threads. I will add the ones from your list and alphabetize them.

nice resource. unfortunately my school is doing all pdf's now :mad:

i have to pay $60 for a "resource fee" for every class just to dowload my books for school. can't recoup my cost or anything. LAME!!!

That SUCKS ($60 fee) but at the same time, it's awesome that they are going to a .pdf format that you can look at online or (hopefully download).

I wonder how they came to the $60.00 per class fee for bunch of 1's and 0's in electron speak...that seems kind of outrageous! :eek:

That sucks that happened to you with Powells, but if you've ever been there in person, you'd understand why. It's the biggest book store I've ever seen. Lots of out of print books and such you can't find elsewhere. Personally, I do my shopping on amazon or half.com, but if I really need to find something I always check Powells.

www.affordabook.com is a comparison engine for new/used books, I guess it could count.

If you want really good deals on used books, go to the site that book sellers use to get their inventory. http://www.booksalefinder.com If you go to one of these you may need to stand in line an hour before opening and be prepared to GRAB! Its not uncommon to pick up used books for a dollar or two.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned www.bookcrossing.com [bookcrossing.com].
It's not really a "used book website", but rather a website where you can list a book that you want, and someone might send it to you in a "Random Act of Bookcrossing Kindness (RABCK)". It's happened to me more than once.
Otherwise, many people are willing to trade books.

I've found some good deals on www.bn.com (Barnes and Noble's site). It seems they deal with alot of vendors on their used and out of print section.

How about a swap or sales site for audio books on CD? I have a bunch ( +/- 50) and have some luck selling and buying on EBay but have never found a site specific to audio books.

Great list, personally I have used gettextbooks.com for price comparision (great site for price search) and amazon.com marketplace and eBay for the best deals on textbooks.

It's a non-profit organization - it sends books to Africa, etc.

The problem buying used books online is the shipping costs, but at betterworld - shipping is free. Most of their books are used library books. So - most of the books are hard cover.

I once ordered about 8 books from them - My total was a bit over $4 a book. I think the total about about $34.

The titles were books that were about $6-12 each (with shipping) other places.

And - well - you make the world, um... better. And, well, the free shipping didn't hurt.

I really like Bigwords for buying textbooks. They search all of the other online bookstores and find the best price. Then, they add coupons, multibook discounts, and shipping and show you how much it will REALLY cost. They even have options to include or exclude digital versions and international editions. They also have a Tell A Friend program that allows you to get a free t-shirt if you get your friends to view the website, sign up for the newsletter, or tell their own friends. I have gotten 2 or 3 t-shirts this way and a bunch of free stickers!

if you want to save even more money get the earlier edition book (If you need the 8th edition get the 7th edition. They are almost always 99% the same text.

Half.com is good, and I've used them quite a bit for my textbooks.
But checkout chegg . com ... I used them this semester to rent my textbooks and it was cheap (about the amount of money I would have gotten to sell the books back).

Addall.com is another that I use. Compares many sites, including Half.com and Amazon marketplace.

I personally prefer bigwords.com ..it's branched out into videogames and uh..music I believe.

And international editions, 99% of the time, work. Sometimes they're in black and white or are softcover, but they're also about 1/4 the price or less. Steals!

No, I'm not with half.com. I have been buying my books there for several years, but many people do not know about it, believe it or not. A co-worker was discussing how much her kid's books were at the University of Florida and I told her about half. I thought I would post it for the apparently few number of people who aren't aware of the site. She saved a lot of money.

I used Alibris (www.alibris.com) to get a really obscure book. I had no problems with the transaction and plan to use them again.

www.ecampus.com and www.textbooksrus.com are pretty good sites. I bought two brand new books for the price of one used book from them..they take trade ins too.

I recommend alibris as well, especially for medical texts (for med students, residents, etc)

google search 'alibris coupon' to get the $x/x off.

half.com is a classic and i've never had a problem

I am currently a student and have bought many textbooks from the following sites without a problem:

HALF.COM - my go to site for texts. great deals..i've saved at least 75% on books here!

amazon marketplace - sometimes they have a good deal, but i usually find a better deal on half - depends on the book though. i always sell back my old books here as well.

ecampus - not the best place to buy bargain textbooks imo but i've made a few bucks by selling some old books back

ebay - got my organic chemistry book here for $130 with shipping when it was $270 in the book store.

always check all bargain sites before you make a purchase! some have better deals on certain books, etc

Amazon marketplace is the best imo. I find my books sell much faster there, as opposed to listing it on half.

I think post #50 about half.com was previously in hot deals and then merged with this thread. You cannot rate threads in help me find a deal, so it would have to been ratings from hot deals.

I've used isbn.nu for years. It's not a seller, it's a meta search tool You can input he name, author or isbn and it returns a table with stores selling it new & used (and link), price (lowest 1st), applicable coupon codes, shipping options & times and shipping cost est. if you want. Even currency converter. I think it's much easier than even going to a favorite site and trying to figure out coupons, shipping and all.

I didn't go through all the replies but, have anyone tried DEALOZ.COM which used to be CAMPUSI.COM.
It does the search for you from several books' websites.

Paperbackswap.com does audio books. Someone also asked about cds and dvds- they also have sister sites for those as well, although I haven't used them yet.

So there was one book that I could not find used at any of these sites, BUT... Amazon UK had the book for $90 less. Apparently in the UK many textbooks are cheaper, so if your book is a new edition, I highly recommend going this route.

ecampus is very slow to pay for buybacks. It tooks me 7 weeks to get paid.

I don't believe anyone mentioned this one but http://www.chegg.com/is a great website for textbooks. It is a website where you buy them but rather rent them for the semester.

You guys in college should definitely use DealOz website. This is a great site that finds the absolute lowest price from all those online sellers. I just wish I found out about it in my early college years.

They have some of the lowest prices on used books I have ever seen and often times it's free shipping. They don't specialize in College books like those other sites but that doesn't mean they won't have what you are looking for. Plus their website looks a helluva lot better than most of those on the list.

I joined PBS (Paperback Swap) over a year ago and love it! Get rid of all books I've read and replenish with new ones. Same for CD's. Haven't done the DVD's. Both fabulous sites, works like SD - members only, no cost (except postage), can PM members,etc. I highly recommend this site, its been a wonderful experience, much like SD :bounce:

I ordered the entire Janet Evanovich book set (Stephanie Plum series) - SUPER cheap and FAST shipping on all the books I ordered from Dallas.. one ended up being sold out but I found another and that came today... however 2 books I ordered from WA still haven't shipped but I'm hoping they will come before I'm done reading (there's 16 books in the series and I'm on 7 now..) So far I LOVE Thriftbooks.com, super cheap, great selection and free shipping!

I guess I'm a bit spoiled by the half price book warehouse sales (a dollar a book for pbs on day one, fill a big bag on day two for 20 - Under 22 bucks for over 40 books) - but for fiction (especially sci-fi and fantasy) what's the best seller? I mean Amazon Marketplace has a bunch of penny books but then even when you buy six or seven, they want to charge you shipping on each one which comes out to 20-30 bucks. It certainly doesn't cost that much to ship (and they claim Amazon won't let them combine shipping, but they really don't care, there's ways). so where do you guys recommend? I'm trying to spend about 2 bucks on average for books for pbs, and about double for HC?

try Amazon. They have listings for new and used. You'll probably find what you're looking for there, also Half Price Books has a large collection of books in all categories.

I didn't see Chegg on the list. DD has been very pleased with their college books.
