  • (10/13) HP company store (Palm) sold touchpads only to HP employees for $100 in Sunnyvale, CA. Limited 5 per person [but this is a matter of dispute: an HP employee who belongs to SD says the store did not allow 5]. Had to sign contract saying they won't resell them.

  • 32GB model at $249 was shown in stock at shopping.HP.com for a short period of time around 3-4am EST 10/3, but everyone who ordered received a notice stating that the order was declined and that they should call a particular number between 10am and 10pm EST.
  • 32GB model at $249 was available again at shopping.HP.com around 5pm EST 10/3. According to sales rep, this was a glitch on the website. No confirmed orders so far.

Rumor only:
(Rumor date - 9/21) TigerDirect supposedly has 2500 more 32GB touchpads waiting to go live shortly in a crap bundle with a 32GB unit/AC Adapter/Belkin case for $199
(Rumor update - 10/3) TigerDirect apparently still has this TP stock ... no telling when they will put it on sale.
(Rumor update - 10/5) TigerDirect apparently still has 2,470 of the 32s just sitting in the warehouses + 330 of the 16s just sitting ...
(Rumor update - 10/7) TigerDirect: Their TPs will eventually be sold in bundles -- only at CompUSA B&M stores - will not be sold online at TD website. Probably another week or two before bundles go on sale at B&M stores. TP bundles will be in all stores to get people in the door for the holiday season. Again, will not be sold online at TD website.

Quote:

Thank you for your continued interest in webOS and the HP TouchPad. We wanted to update you with a status of your order 305XXXXX

Your order is still confirmed, and we are fulfilling orders daily based on the time the order was received. We expect all orders to ship by October 31st. We will continue to update you of any changes to this date via email until your order ships. We apologize that we cannot give you an exact ship date for your order. Please note that planned ship and delivery dates on the Order Status page are not accurate for TouchPad orders. You will receive a final shipping notification with a tracking number once your order has actually shipped.

If this timeline is not acceptable, please send an email to TouchPadCancel@hp.com with your instructions for cancellation within a week. Be sure to include your HP order number and the name and ship-to address on the order. Also please indicate clearly if this is the only order requiring cancellation or if you wish all orders in your name to be canceled. You will receive an automated cancel notification when your order cancellation request has been processed. Please be aware, however, that cancellations cannot be reversed, and our US SMB store has sold out of HP TouchPad and will not make any further available for sale

In addition, at the significantly reduced price, the HP TouchPad does not qualify for our standard 30-day return policy and is not returnable.

If you used a credit card for your purchase: Please check the expiration date of the card used for your TouchPad purchase. If it is set to expire within the next few weeks, you will need to contact HP immediately to update the expiration or provide a new card number. You can call 1-800-888-0292, opt 3 to speak to an SMB representative or you can send an email to TouchPadCancel@hp.com with the subject line “CREDIT CARD CALL-BACK.” Please provide the name on the order, the HP order number and a phone number where you can be reached, and a Customer Service Representative will call you back to update the credit card information. Also note that the credit card used for the purchase will be charged at the time of shipment.

All they really needed to do to get a hold of the market was underprice by $100. I don't understand why they spent like 1 billion trying to compete with Apple.

DeadCheap 08-19-2011 04:27 PM

This doesn;t look like they have built in SD slot, so I think getting the 32GB one is better.

tennisplayer888 08-19-2011 04:27 PM

I will max out my CC if these go on sale for the said prices.

OT: Who do you think will buy out the HP/Compaq computer line? I could see Sony, Lenovo, maybe Toshiba or Dell buying the Envy line but that's about it.

Well you know the first Acer Aspire One AO722 netbook deal for $250-$50 GC? Um, only 1 person got to my Target and I got there a couple hours after open. Flipped one for $250. They're selling for $280 on ebay. Thing is, only .3% of the U.S. has a SD account, very few people know.

With no future security update, no WebOS update, no application like web browser update (no one develop new application for WebOS even though there is not much app to begin with) for this dying product, not sure why people will pay more than $100 for it unless it can be hack to install Android or other OS.

Apparently it doesn't have that great of hardware:

http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/19/ipa...-revealed/

Hewlett-Packard engineers did dare pull unthinkable: They hacked iPad to install webOS only to find out Apple’s hardware runs their mobile operating system more than twice as fast compared to their own TouchPad hardware, a source “close to the subject” told The Next Web.

You kidding right ?

If all you want to do is surf the net, watch movies, then who cares ?

It isn't as if you'll be using it to replace your pc!

Also for 99 bucks there is going to be tons of hackers playing with it and developing custom roms and apps

Dang I'd get this for $100. Anyone know what codecs this tablet can play or an app that can play various codecs? I'd love this to watch videos while I travel. Hopefully someone can hack this and put android on it.

Yes, tested in store and it was smooth. Just make sure your wireless network has a good signal. No issues.

In for one. I would love to watch hulu in bed.

Frankly, someone needs to get fired for letting HP waste all that money

swiftsmile12 08-19-2011 05:06 PM

Every SDer should buy 2. One for yourself and one for hacker(s).

Hackers: Please figure out a way and tell us how to load Android on our TouchPad and you can keep yours

jaysram 08-19-2011 05:06 PM

I'm VERY tempted to get this. I still have my HP employee discount and a gift card that I have yet to use. I just don't like the idea of a very weak developer network + no software updates...

LOL...trust a sales rep via online chat from a company going out of business with $400 of credit

HP's overhaul, announced Thursday, has three parts:

-- HP will stop making tablet computers and smartphones by October.

-- It will try to spin off or sell its PC business, the world's largest. By the end of next year, HP computers could be sold under another company's name.

-- The company plans to buy business software maker Autonomy Corp. for about $10 billion in one of the biggest takeovers in HP's 72-year history. That would expand HP's software and services

Amazon Visa=20% and a $100 gift card.

ladnar 08-19-2011 05:09 PM

how well do you think these can be resold? i don't necessarily need a tablet (just got that acer netbook from target), but i could definitely use some more spending money...

seetachi 08-19-2011 05:10 PM

how is this compared to Acer 500 on front page?

NFS4 08-19-2011 05:11 PM

Confirmed:

Quote:

We were wondering how exactly HP was going to handle the glut of TouchPads in the market now that they’ve decided they’re done making hardware for webOS. Now we have our answer: fire sale!

In a memo sent to HP affiliates, the company issued the declaration to begin liquidating TouchPad inventories, with a price cut of $300 or more:

Quote:

HP will be lowering the price of the TouchPad beginning Saturday 8/20/11. This is the lowest price ever for the TouchPad so please post it as soon as it goes live.

16GB TouchPad- $99; 32GB TouchPad - $149
The pricing may be set to go live tomorrow, but that hasn’t stopped some retailers. Best Buy and Future Shop have already implemented the new pricing, and we expect others will follow through shortly. It seems HP’s finally looking to get those lofty unit sales numbers they wanted, though they can throw profit margin out the window. Unknown: if, when, or how much HP will cut the price of the sort-of-launched 64GB TouchPad.

I'm just wondering how I can sell my PoS Archos Arnova 10b that I recently bought for $100 (see below) after I buy this HP instead.

I can only pray someone will hack it so we can put android on it sooner or later (hope sooner though)

Amazon doesn't have this. Anyone know of a reputable online dealer where I wouldn't have to pay tax?

baberswallet 08-19-2011 05:15 PM

if u call hp they will change price after ti ships, but they will charge you the tax on 399 and not 99 and only refund price difference before tax

I knew it would happen... I did a tablet testing survey 1-2 months ago and my opinion on HP is really poor.
I tried to recall if I rated Probably would buy for $99 or not.

mystery250 08-19-2011 05:15 PM

Will the app catalog still be live?

kbenson 08-19-2011 05:16 PM

This has the very likely potential to drop prices of all pad tablets.

HP is telling all the other makers "we came to the game too late, but we can still throw the chess pieces all over the floor"

Tranman409 08-19-2011 05:16 PM

does anyone know if it's friendly towards putting movies on it? I would like to drag/drop anime shows on it or read manga

diwu1989 08-19-2011 05:16 PM

This will probably beat every blackfriday deal this year. Just the ability to read pdf on the ips screen is worth it.

The1andonly 08-19-2011 05:17 PM

This seems like a great deal but more like $100 off imho. Google just bought Motorola so take from that what you want and IOS as tightly built as it is had numerous exploits last month so with no updates I would be cautious with what I use it for.

staples_crusadr 08-19-2011 05:17 PM

Tax Kills The Deal :-(

Yeah, but do you know how many there are left?

Aisorik 08-19-2011 05:18 PM

A hundred smacks is tempting, but the more reviews I read, the less I'm tempted. WebOS in it's current form is buggy/laggy compared to it's brethren, and the zero chance of official updates means what you get maybe very well be what you get. Forever.

shifter25 08-19-2011 05:18 PM

Are the best buy stores out of stock already? Their online site is saying they're all sold out now.

For just having a tablet around the house to keep in the living room or bedroom to catch up on news and e-mails, this is an excellent deal. I'm also hoping that they do a fire sale for all the CDMA and GSM HP Pre 3s that they'll have left that they won't be giving to carriers. I'll take one of those for $99...

The 16gb is $300 off MSRP, and you think $8 in tax kills the deal? Really?
