Just put CM9 on it. If you are like me, you'll never run WebOS again.

instead of dual boot, is it possible to make it single boot to CM?

With dual boot it 'defaults' to boot with CM if you don't select WebOS within the first 5 seconds of powering on.

And FWIW, I wouldn't get rid of WebOS altogether. Android is nice and all but there are still some things WebOS does better (multitasking, web browsing, etc.). In fact I hardly ever use Android these days unless there's an app I'd like to use that's not available on WebOS. Other than that, when it comes to web browsing, video streaming, checking email, etc. I prefer using WebOS (same as everyone else I know that has a TP with dual boot).

Works great for me too. I have it dual booted. I use an Android app for file transfer to a work server, but use webos for the kindle reader which is much nicer. In between a bounce back and forth with both. Android has more apps, but webos is much smoother and I like being able to keep multiple windows open. This was a great deal and continues to serve me well. I use it in my car with a sprint over drive and it's easy to use and when I compare the screen to my friend's Ipad 2, it's just as good if not a little bit better.

Go into your wireless setting and the go to the advanced settings. Turn on the setting that allows the wireless to stay on during sleep mode.

Currently they are running for around 200-225 if you watch closely in ebay.

I got two 32 GB BNIB recently, one of them is the 4G AT&T version both for $225.

Install Preware, and then search for private browsing. You can also block ads using adblock. Vastly improves the browsing experience...

Not as techy or tweakable as Android (but if you want that, buy the TP and put Android on it....did it on all the TPs we've bought so far) but also more flexible than iOS. Not to mention the TP hardware is quite good so I'd say if you can buy the 32GB for around $250 (even refurb) it's still one of the best deals out there on an ~10" tablet!

Just keep watching craigslist and ebay. I brought a BNIB 32GB wifi for 240 from ebay and a BNIB 32GB AT&T 4G for $230. The seller for 4G was a palm employee and did not want it. I was amazed I could get the 4G one for less than wifi. Just some patience and searching around helps. TP 4G is awesome, my ATT sim just works fine. I sold bunch of HP Veers I had bought as part of firesale, but could not get hold of TP. so in effect all solved. Now to put CM9 A2 for weekend project :bounce::bounce:

agreed this is the best 10.1 inch tab out there for the current price. I saw a report Leo former HP ceo killed it prematurely from a previous HP CTO who was involved in buying palm. This retailed at $600 when it was released, remember?

Wow I thought this sucker was long dead.

I bought one of the new iPad 3s and have been enjoying it. I must say the Touchpad definitely had some better ideas going for it though. I love the cards that you can easily switch between and the charging station that I simply have to just set the Touchpad down on and it starts charging. No plugging anything in. What kills the Touchpad is the lack of apps. I really think if it just had Netflix on it the thing would be golden.

If only I could somehow mangle the two together.

Just buy a few replacement USB to mico-USB cables. I have a bazillion of them from using Nokia phones and they are GREAT quality, no problems working with the wall charger.

Does HP cover their cables under warranty? Mine is basically toast at this point, keep meaning to call and ask, but just to lazy since I have a few Nokia's to replace it.

What part of the cable is peone to damage? The usb side or the microsusb side? I haven't even used the cable yet. I have been using my TP charger and the BB cable to charge both.
I just bought a dozen HP chargers, does anyone know if they comes with the cable?

dcmanryan 05-11-2012 08:39 PM

Micro side. You have to bend it up to get to charge. This has happened 4 times. I just place a book under it to pry it up a bit. Yes HP will warranty cables but you call in, wait, listen raheem try to tell you in broken english that you don't have phone support, it's a pain. They will overnight you a cable though. My last one went three weeks and it does nothing now. They're total garbage and the $5 they won't for a new one is overpriced.

They should, the second one I purchased did. HP packaging, etc. As long as that's what you purchased, they will have the cables! ...and you'll get a few uses out of them before they're toast.

(short answer)
Yes, assuming Pantech hasn't changed the specs of their PDC-MUHS since they manufactured mine, this is easily the heaviest duty USB cable I've ever seen.

(long answer)
Exact same here. I was burning through those things until I found this usb cable in a hotel box of courtesy phone chargers that worked with the TP, & is about twice the thickness of the HP factory cord that came with the charger- it is super heavy duty. Still going strong. NOw the only problem is I want to buy more for others I've bought TP's for (as I'm certain I'll be good with just one), & there is a sticker on one end that reads "Pantech USB Data Cable, MODEL: PDC-MUHS, MFR: GANA, Supplied by Pantech Korea, Made in China"; and I've found that model number online at a few places.

Of course ~$8 is more expensive than an entire new charger from HP, though I'd still buy some if I was confident they are still the exact same thing as I have. Because the pictures on the retailers' websites look slightly different than mine. The ratio of cord diameter to USB plug width doesn't make the cord look quite as beefy as mine. Not sure if they've changed it, or if it will still be just as heavy duty.

Either way, I'm sure ANYTHING will be better than that dinky cable HP gives you. Probably the worst I've seen.

I finally gave up and just got a used touchstone charger off of amazon ($25). Best $$ well spent.

I think this will go down for me as the mother or all threads, second most money making Slickdeal in my history second only to my Sprint SERO $30 Plan TOL Sales. And for chaos sake the free Google Chrome Laptop.

I know there are still people out there mad that didn't get a TouchPad. Funniest thing was fate was looking favorably on me. My brother had just flown down to Miami for vacation. And was complaining how everyone on the flight had a Tablet iPad or otherwise, except him. Few days later we are at Best Buy looking at the $499 HP TouchPads.

Th every next day this thread starts, HP SMB Rep actually calls me back at work and I place and order for 12 HP TouchPads. And we are able to buy 2 at Best Buy.

We were part of the late delivery but freshly made second batch at least HP SMB honored every unit.

I am down to my last HP TouchPad my very own, its getting a little long in the tooth, especially next to the Ipad 3 and its amazing resolution. May sell it soon for $200. But I don;t want to because it represent such a cool event.

Im very tempted to get one from Woot.com. I bought a 16GB from Amazon on the firesale, it sat in a closet until CM9 came out for it. Ive been using it since. I would love to get one for my GF, bday is 2 mths. So many rumors about other Android tablets coming out, might be worth the wait for updated hardware.

mig0 05-18-2012 03:01 PM

I did end up buying a touchpad, the refurb 32gb model for $240 (after tax/shipping, was $209, cant recall the retailer). Its an ok device. I would like it more if I had a proper screen protector, and if there were more webos apps, and if I had a better idea of what kind of file support (videos) the device had- I put a bunch of videos on it and couldn't play most of the files. I did install cyanogen 9 on it and I'm digging android but really strongly favor iOS regardless. Would've been nice to snag this tablet for $150 not the $209 I paid but (shrug).

Question for anyone still reading. If webos gets updated, since I'm dual booting with android, I can't just simply upgrade to the newer version of webos correct? I'd have to wait for "instructions" on how to preserve cyanogen just as with jailbreakers?

It was on clearance for $199. I got a display item with 10% discount and I used staples $25 off 75 coupon too. There is a separate thread for this deal. I believe, Office depot has sold out Acer tab by now.

Which do you like better, HP TP or Acer?

gibsonbass 05-27-2012 07:32 PM

To tell you truth, I bought Acer to flip it on craigslist. But I played with Acer for few days and liked it. I had ICS installed in TP but it wasnt stable. Battery life was poor,Camera not working and CM9 was bit unstable. That said, the reason sold TP was I got Acer for good price. TP is very good for that price if you installed ICS. Also, I like to keep changing device.

Finally Unloaded Last 2 HP TouchPads $180 each, bought a new Transformer Prime TF201-B1-GR

Super IPS + LED display 1280x800
Tegra 3 4 Cores with a low power 5th Core

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFou54VkNrc

I am blown away, I was going to go with an iPad 3 but the Display on the Transformer Prime is just better quality hard to explain. Plus iPad 3 only has 2 CPU cores so it will be outdated.

Tegra 3 offer THD optimized games with full 1080p HDMI out, basically its the best gaming Tablet available period. Xbox 360 quality graphics for games like Fruit Ninja THD or PinaBall THD

I actually Googled it, in some of the most absurd reviews they favor the A5X (when its not powering the Retina display) Thats absurd, when is it not running the Retina Display ?

Tegra 3 has 4 Cores and 1280x800 looks amazing with its Super IPS + LED Display. Some how Apple has convinced people you "need" resolution Above 1080p in a 9.7 inch Tablet. When For Years 1080p has been sufficient

I am not going to be doing any serious novel reading on it so to me Speed and Gaming matter

Do a side by Side comparison of Fruit Ninja HD on the iPad 3 and Fruit Ninja THD on the Transformer Prime.

Here is what happens since the iPad 3 uses a very high Resolution display Fruit Ninja HD which runs at a resolution of 1024x768 on the Retina Display of 2048x1536 what happens is that it looks horrible. With Squared off looking fruit

While Tegra 3 Optimized Fruit Ninja THD runs at 1280x800 and the fruit is completely round and smooth, it looks just like the Xbox 360 Version.

A5X can not beat the Tegra 3 period.

Link please? I've searched shopping.hp.com three different ways and unable to locate.

Or you're trolling, which I'd hope is not the case. TP's are a sore subject for most still holding out trying to find one at $150. I was lucky to get one and loved it ever since!

Seems that way, and if they do not respond shortly I will assume as such myself.

Would be a fairly low action to pull, but some people are just that sad unfortunately.

Why I always remain a bit skeptical, but not judgmental until enough chances have been given to prove oneself!

Off to bed with me, I don't need another one, but I'd like to give one for my teammate, she'd love it!

Power cable might be bad. change out usb cable but keep part that plugs in wall. My usb cable failed on two of my touchpads - would have never believed it. Changed out usb cable and works fine now.

Mine failed a couple of weeks ago. I called HP WebOS customer service, paid $15 and shipped my unit for repair. I received a rectified unit yesterday.

kodakman 07-09-2012 09:18 AM

Had to pay $14.95 for tech support just to replace a dead Touchpad.. Their number is (877) 426-3777, a call center in India. What a scam. HP forces you to call a tech center to verify it is truly dead before issuing a RMA, but you have to give them a credit card first. So HP still makes money even though their product is discontinued.

nickel 07-09-2012 01:35 PM

Your should ask for a refund.... if it was confirmed DEAD it should be warranty support and not billable.

This doesnt sound scammy to me. Ive had to pay a shipping/handling charge for sending items in for warranty repairs from other manufacturers. Granted some do not do this (MS Xbox and Apple) to name a few but others do.

Thats not very reasonable. We should be happy that HP even offers support on a discontinued item.

It wasn't clear if the $14.95 was a shipping and handling charge or just an INCIDENT CHARGE.

I would expect no less. The touchpad has a one year warranty, assuming bought new, so the vast majority of touchpad should be still under warranty.

Yep, as well as Linux and OSX.

maestro5050 07-12-2012 12:05 PM

Just FYI since I recently went through HP support to RMA a Touchpad:

The Touchpads have a one year parts and labor warranty as well as 90 days (from the date of purchase) WebOS phone support. After that initial 90 days is up, they charge $14.95 per incident to perform device troubleshooting.

It was explained to me by the HP representative I dealt with that this $14.95 amount WOULD be refunded if the issue was determined to be a hardware malfunction requiring repair or replacement. It is NOT a charge for shipping and handling.

If someone was charged $14.95 for a non-hardware issue, the charge should stand. If hardware failure was confirmed by HP and repair/replacement was required, I certainly would contact them and request that the $14.95 charge be reversed as per their policy.

snooches1 07-14-2012 10:02 PM

Please update when you have your situation resolved. There may be many others in your boat with hardware issues. Good luck.

I sent one in about 10 days ago and it came back this morning fixed. It was a problem with charging. They overnighted a package to ship it in and overnighted the package to them and back to me. Never asked for a penny. We are so happy to have it back working!

Update 7-21. Just received a repaired unit from HP. They did an excellent job of fixing it, works just like brand new. I've ditched mine from active use since for an iPad 2, but I still play ROMs on it, and I still really like the cards on webOS. Only problem is, I hate dualbooting into battery-killing Android for apps and they still never produced the app on webOS that would let you run Android apps in cards, which sucks.

I just decided to sell mine this weekend on CL. I never used it. I rooted it right away, and got some apps on there, but I've just been so busy with my Android phones that I didn't want to add another device to the flashing routines I had been doing. I originally thought that, at worst, when it sat on the end table I'd just pick it up and surf the web on it, check out my calendar, or something else. If not that, then let it play photos like a digital frame.

I did NONE of that. Hell, I couldn't convince myself to get another Android tablet at all, and my wife never touches her iPad (bought for work) when we're at home. I THOUGHT that the Nexus 7 could be different, because you could handle it with one hand similarly to the phone, which is super convenient and not as awkward as a full sized tablet. So I undersold all the other CL auctions by selling with cases and accessories and it was gone in half a day. With money in hand, I went to get an N7, then stopped because I still could not manage to convince myself I needed or would use one. I might as well put it towards a superphone because I ALWAYS use that.

I guess I did do that... my bad. I was confused until I looked back and was like - where's the rest of my post? I read the reply before mine and saw how that guy rarely uses his, either. I actually meant to say more at the end of my post but got called off to do something and guess I posted it before I did. You can see how abruptly my post above ends...

I meant to ask, on the same topic, if people are actually getting that much usage out of their Touchpads, and if it's because of WebOS or if they've loaded Android on it exclusively. Either way, isn't the form factor (being heavy) turning some people off?

I really think the Touchpad is an underrated product. With a little more effort and refining, it could have been a player in the tablet market.

It's a touch heavy, but really not too bad. Otherwise, I think the design is pretty good. The speakers rock.

I was late to the Android party, but finally installed the Cyanogen mod 9 last week, and I'm loving it. There are a few minor bugs on some websites, but for the most part, it runs very smoothly. I'm getting very good battery life as well. The Touchpad is going to be my "beater" tablet that I can use all the time. It's great for operating my Yamaha receiver, which makes navigating a PITA with its built-in menus, but the Android app makes it a joy.

I'm loving this thing again!

I was just messing with ya. I use my TP daily. I have to admit, it sat in a closet for 4-5 months! One ICS was released for it though, Ive been using it since. Does it replace my laptop? No. I mainly use it to read (ebooks, Reddit, etc) and to watch Netflix. I also use it near the sofa if I want to look something up quickly. Regarding the form factor, its not that heavy but the 10" size is a pita to type on sometimes. This is the main reason I bought my gf a N7.

Been using mine since August last year, I have android on it, but much prefer WEBOS for many tasks, like reading books. The HP kindle app is much better than the droid. WEBOS lets my battery last and last. Best money I've spent on a tablet. Going to be getting an Ipad from work, will see how I like it.

Same, I didn't even think about using my touchpad until ICS came out. The original plan was to install android but webos is truly something.

A fresh install of webos 3.0.5 (released 1/12, much faster than 3.0.2) and overclocking to 1.7ghz is all you need.

I mainly use it for browsing, reading ebooks, email, and portable calender (simple stuff, tasks that any tablet would probably excel at).

Btw for those considering selling, you should know that jelly bean is being worked on for the TP (insane considering jb just came out for the nexus 7)

I regret selling my 32gb about 5-6 months back. I actually loved WebOS but was disappointed with the lack of apps (android wasn't that great on TP back then). If I could, I'd have kept it. That being said, I still ended up with a bit of profit, so I guess it all worked out.

In the menu or settings area, in one of the cards you will see something like RESET OPTIONS. There are multiple choices, with one of them being a secure rest that makes it harder to retrieve your information - probably something like a low level wipe. It does warn you that it takes a little longer than usual... that is no exaggeration. I had already gone thru via USB/computer connection and deleted all my personal files and photos, then went thru each app and logged out, but the secure connection took no less than an hour and 15 minutes. When it finally finished and rebooted, I thought I had bricked the thing because it stayed on the HP logo forever (it pulsated, but still) and I couldn't power it off or anything. I was panicking because I was going to meet my buyer at the time. I had resigned to telling him something went wrong and, as he pulled up next to me, I looked down and the Touchpad was on the language choice screen. Whew.

My buyer told me he was getting it solely to place Android on it. We chatted for a bit and he said ICS was going on right away, and neither of us knew if JB was ready yet, but agreed it would be soon. I also did love WebOS but the lack of apps kept me from doing my normal tasks on it. I'm glad this thing still gets so much support from the community - it really is an adored child. I've been going back and forth in my head about my decision to sell it but then I remind myself that I probably picked it up and used it less than a half dozen times since I got it in the firesale. So I'm glad someone else gets to take advantage of it.

JameyJ 07-26-2012 09:07 AM

Thanks for the details. If I used mine at all, I'd keep it but it hadn't even been powered on for about 6 months until a week or so ago. I'm finally using it for the first time, but all I'm using it for is a screen to watch a security camera feed. Buying a $60 hong kong android tablet is probably a better option for me since I'm just using it as a screen anyway.

Thanks again. repped!

Press and hold home button and power button for about 15 seconds, keeping it plugged in.

If that doesn't work, and you can't get the screen to turn on at all you'll probably have to send it in.

I use my HP TP every day (CM9). I also wish I could go back in time and buy 5-6 of them for family/friends when I had the opportunity. I was hesitant because of the uncertainty that Android would be able to run on it.

my touchpad on CMD9 webcam, and even music dont work. it is also kinda slow and day and night difference in user interface smoothness compare to my ipad 3 or even the ipad 1. But for the price I cant complain much. Does anyone experience the same?

Webcam has never worked with Android. It may or may not in the future due to proprietary drivers. Im not sure what you mean about music, is there a certain app you are referring to? I use the standard music app, Pandora, Spotify, etc, all work just fine. Slowdowns? The only slowness I have is when playing graphic intensive games like Shadowrun. That's expected due to the chipset.

the standard music app said "music stop working" error. And i'm talking about the slowness compare to the iPad. Have you used the ipad? just wonder is my touchpad slow or is it just normal speed?

Yes, I have used the iPad. What aspect are you referring to? Opening applications? Downloading apps? Swiping windows? You need to be more specific. In general, my TP speed is just fine. Now playing graphic intensive games, yea, the $500 iPad would most likely beat it. If you are having issues, I suspect it may be a rouge app eating up resources in the background. As for the standard music app, what files are you loading? MP3? Try one of the other 100+ music apps on Google Play. I recommend PowerAMP or MixZing .

downloading apps is pretty fast but opening apps is slow and just doesnt feel just as smooth when using. I guess it's just the OS difference?

When you say slow, how long? What app?

azxswq 08-02-2012 06:40 AM

With CM9, Touchpad is an unbeatable deal. Hardware wise, it was originally meant to compete with Ipad 2. And on WebOS browser, it beats IPad 2 on browsing speed/experience and such... CM9/Android dual boot makes this tablet the reference system for dedicated Android hackers.

Probably the best purchase in the last 5 years... and I am happy to see the one-year anniversary coming shortly. (technically, Aug 2011 is when we ordered, and Nov is when we got them?!?)

Any case, May this thread live on forever. (a way to test wordpress, slickdeals web comment tools.)

Will purchase a HP computer over Dell from now on.

Update August 6. HP did charge my credit $14.95 to fix my Tablet even though it was under warranty. I am not complaining because at least HP still support their discontinued product.

Yes it will, but you do not tell them or send your TP with a third party OS. Use WebOS Dr to wipe clean the TP before sending it. Done it before.

I use mine whenever it is more convenient than going upstairs or firing up a laptop (probably 3-4 times per day on 4-5 days per week). I use it mostly for
  1. accuwweather
  2. youtube
  3. skype
  4. USA Today app
  5. just looking up all kinds random stuff using the browser, such as following up on news headlines

Recently, I brought it along to a conference where I could constantly see the conference schedule and all the presentations (via WiFi). It worked perfectly.

So, it works fine for what it does.
I updated it more frequently using Preware for about 6 months after I got it. Now I feel that I have little need to update or worry about its long term use.

It is amazing that this SD thread is still going strong.

sacflies 08-13-2012 11:07 PM

Still using my TP. Put android on it earlier this year. Nice to be able to do WebOS or android. Still runs OK, but sometimes does quirky things on facebook or slickdeals when trying to post. Needs a restart every couple days. But for $100 for the 32GB (last one local Walmart had) I ain't complaining. Got 3 Touchstone charging docks too. I got another one for a friend and sold one on ebay for $270 last year.

Still rocking the Palm Pixi Plus too! Although the screen on one just died on me, but I have 2 backups. It's plenty phone for me. I don't feel the need to be all big and bad with the iphone.

This epic thread lives!

I have two Touchpads and they get used almost daily between me and two kids (4 and 6). I have CM9 on them, and never boot into WebOS. They are used pretty much daily and would be used more if Mom would let the kids have their way. They watch Netflix and have them loaded up with free games. Also have a handful of movies on them for road trips.
I use one almost every night for browsing in bed, the only time I can find to get on the internet and check Slickdeals!
I did just purchase a Thrive from a recent post and I'm tinkering with that. It's much larger, though not heavier. Build quality doesn't seem as good. But I installed a rooted ICS rom on it and am still figuring it. I think I'll let the kids man-handle the Touchpads (very impressed with how the touchpads hold up to the kids use).
All in all, I probably still prefer the Touchpad to the Thrive. But I bought the Thrive for the HDMI out, full sized SD card, and removable battery-which are all awesome. Why or why don't all tablets have removable batteries yet?!!
